Saints to release FS Dwight Smith

Does anyone know why Smith was cut? Did he exhibit some turd like behaviors that caused the team to sour on him? He is a good FS with good coverage ability and I don't see why New Orleans would just cut him.

I don't understand why someone would sign Smith and then spend a 2nd round pick on Josh Bullocks. I think New Orleans could have still moved Smith to CB. He might have been able to win a starting job.

and they drafted another FS in the 2nd round this year.

I was just posting this in the NFC South thread. Stupid as letting Bentley walk for nothing. For every one good move we make, we make two bad ones.

The stupid move is letting him go AT ALL. IMO, it's right up there with letting one of the best centers in the league walk for nothing, then trading for the guy he replaced. As Yen Lo said, Smith was the best DB we had.

I asked him about Joyner's comments

Yeah, it leaves out the fact the whole TEAM was terrible last year. 3-13? Hurricane? Our LBs had to be the worst group in the league, and our D-line was not much better. Charles Grant had 2.5 sacks. Maybe he shoulda been cut. Mike McKenzie was getting torched, maybe we should cut him. Joe Horn had about 30 catches. Cut. There aren't many Saints fan I have spoken with who don't think Dwight was our best DB last year. But seriously, you have a terrible D, a #1 corner playing like a #2, NO #2 corner, the worst LBs in the league, and DEs playing DT cause the DTs suck, and Dwight had a terrible season? Laughable.

Oh, left out he had a rookie manning the other safety spot, cause the bac ups were terrible. Again, laughable.

This is from a year ago. Twice, he's pulled a gun on people (in 2005 and 2003).


Keith Davis would probably run for cover the minute he sees Smith.





Saints' Smith will not face charges in pellet-gun incident

TAMPA, FL -- New Orleans Saints safety Dwight Smith will not face charges stemming from his March arrest for allegedly pulling a pellet gun on two fans who approached his car outside a fast-food restaurant.

The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office opted not to bring charges, saying it could not determine if Smith was the person actually holding the gun.

Smith, who was originally charged with aggravated assault with a weapon, was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the time.

Smith pleaded guilty in 2003 to pulling a gun on a motorist. He was fined $225, put on a year's probation, ordered to take anger management classes and complete 25 hours of community service.

Smith returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the Bucs' 2003 Super Bowl win over Oakland. He had three interceptions and 83 tackles last season, playing all 16 games for Tampa Bay. He signed a reported $25 million, five-year deal with New Orleans less than a week after the March 1 incident.

David Roston, a friend of Smith's who allegedly punched one of the two fans who approached the vehicle, also will not face a battery charge related to the same incident.

Smith's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not have any immediate comment Wednesday.

It took a little more than just "painfully slow".

Noone's asking or expecting him to be. But he IS on a different level than any safety on our roster. A better level. He is the best FS to come available this offseason. IMO, not looking at him would be a huge mistake, since we now have that chance.

He is likely the best player to come on the market between now and the season starting.

He is a quality DB. He'd solidify the FS issue. He can play CB and he cover slot receivers. He has a skill set that this team badly needs.

However, Dallas has shown no interest in him. Its my personal theory that whatever BP didn't like about him was carried by Payton/Gibbs to NO.

I don't think Dallas brought him in. Mick made some noise about him. There were definitely people on here (myself included) that thought he should be a target.
