More flame from KC Joyner's chat today :)

KJ, Baltimore: KC- Why did the Saints cut Dwight Smith. He seemed like he had a good season last year?

KC Joyner: (4:19 PM ET ) To be perfectly blunt, he had a terrible season. He had to move to strong safety after Bellamy got hurt. He didn't adjust well to the new position and ranked dead last among strong safeties in a large number of categories. Add to this that Josh Bullocks did so well at FS and he ended up being an overpriced backup.

That was on a terrible defense, out of position at SS. He should be roaming the middle of the field, well back from the line of scrimmage. He'd never have a good season at SS, IMO.

Bullocks is their guy and Smith will end up being a high priced backup, which is why they cut him. However, as a starting FS he would play well, I think, and his salary wouldn't be an issue.

It really is a case of him just not fitting in at N.O., but I think he'd fit in well for us... his salary too.

I just want to know, if his talent isn't good enough to go with his character, which looks like it since the Saints have released him, why do you guys want him?

Everyone, welcome Mickey Spagnola to the board.

Because we have a bullet riddled special teamer, a guy with one knee, an aging drunk and a just drafted beanpole currently at the position.

No one is saying he's going to come in here and go to the Pro Bowl, but I can guarantee you none of the guys we have are either.

This guy is a proven player and not some recycled old BP guy on his last leg. We should make a strong effort in trying to get him in here.

He's the perfect compliment to Roy Williams.

This is the bottom line, isn't it?

At FS, he is better than anything we got. I have seen no reason to not look at the guy. And I would be much more comfortable with him back there.

Smith's strength is coverage. The saints are in love with Bullocks, their #2 pick last year. He's a good FS too and cheaper, and homegrown so to speak.

So the Saints are gonna play Bullocks at FS. That leaves Smith to play SS or backup FS. He isn't a good SS, and never will be. Like I said, his strength is lining up against slot reciever's and generally coverage. At SS he's having to do more of what we ask Roy to do... and he isn't cut out for that.

So he isn't a good SS, and as a backup to FS, he's too high priced. Simply put... he isn't a good fit for the Saints.

Dallas, on the other hand, needs a coverage safety to go with Roy Williams. We need a player that can line up in the slot and not get beaten like a rented mule. We need a player to play center field and have the coverage skills to turn and run with some of the talented WR's in this league. SMith can do that. Bullocks can do that for the Saints and he's cheaper. Dallas doesn't really have a proven guy who can do that.

Smith has proven he can do that... that's why I want him in Dallas (at the right price). I can see why the Saints let him go... I can also see why plenty of other teams would want him (assuming ok character).

Did that make sense?

Hmm.

Didn't play well b/c he was out of position? He's 5'10", 201 lbs. That's a little small for a SS. Wonder why.

Did he play at SS at all prior to this?

yeah, bring him in for the vet min is all I'm saying

Then I don't think you and I are too far from agreeing here. The vet min. is a little low I think, but for a reasonable price (for a starting FS) is very doable, I think.

In that case, we're pretty much in agreement. I think you realize he could help us at the position and I understand why you wouldn't want to overpay the guy.

Good. We can get along now and go have a beer. :D

good, let's give him a 2-year deal at the vet min with a 1.5 mil bonus and we'll see what happens, it's not like I'm going to place much confidence in him solving our FS hole or anything
