hmm. I'd cut Coleman and bring Smith in. Hell, I think for his salary we should just claim him off waivers.

I agree your honor..I would bring him in and cut Coleman

I thought you said that the Saints going after Killer was to save money? I guess I mis-read

I could see if we only had Keith Davis and Izell Reese battling for the position...

We got Roy Williams who is a free agent at the end of the year and can only play 1 safety position.

Keith Davis with 4 career bullet holes and 0 career interceptions.

Bariault attempting to be the first player ever to come back from a HIGHLY experimental surgery.

Marcus Coleman who was kicked off the worst defense in the NFL last year and has alcohol issues and had to resort to signing a 1 year, vet minimum contract for a tryout.

And a rookie draft pick who was taken in the 5th round who probably needs at least an offseason to gain weight before he can even attempt to be an everydown NFL safety.

You're right ..we're totally set at safety this year.

It's not my money. And the cap situation is pretty decent - his contract isn't prohibitive, I don't think.

Let's just say I'd be WAY more confortable with him back there, than otherwise.

if he signs for chump change, I'm all for it

who says we're set? I'm just saying that we already have alot of options and likely won't be adding another, and shouldn't

now if Dwight can be had for the vet min, then go for it

Various reports call him "a punk"

So as I see it is a choice between Punk and Drunk.

That's completely unrealistic. He's a player in his prime, he's not signing for the min. If they sign him, it should be for a legit contract.

It's not everyday a legitimate 27 year old starting FS comes on the market.

The Cowboys have to go after this guy. He looks like a perfect fit.

They screwed up not pursuing Darren Sharper when he came available two years ago - and he ended up in Minnesota - and then Hawaii.

They shouldn't pass on this opportunity.

he won't be signed here for anything other than that, but here we are

I know, so maybe he isn't that legit after all...

btw, refresh my memory, hasn't New Orlean's been a horrible D for awhile now?

Especially in July, when most teams have blown their FA budget or set their rosters. Even if other teams show interest, not many are in a position for an extensive bidding war.

No... I meant they may have wanted to save money by trying to trade Smith or make him renigotiate...

I say bring him in! I could see the safety position shaking out like this...

Roy...starting SS
Smith...starting FS.
Davis...Backup SS/FS and ST.
Watkins...Backup FS and ST.
Beriault...most likely cut or PS.
Coleman...most likely cut.

Maybe not. But he's good, I bet he gets a decent contract.

They had the #3 pass defense in the league last year. Kind of a bogus ranking, but Smith was their best DB all year long.

and he's getting cut?!! the Saints can't be that stupid, so I'm going with Dwight isn't very good, it's actually the Saints are stupid and Dwight isn't very good

and #3 pass-D, yeah, why pass when you can run on them? remember in '01 we had the #4 Pass D but the 31st rushing D? ;) I know, you said it was a bogus ranking

There should be NO debate over this one! I was praying we would sign this guy last year, but we blew it. This would be a great way to correct that mistake.

I have followed this guy since he was a shutdown corner at Akron-just 30 miles from me. He not only has the speed, and smarts, but also has great hands, and hits second only to you-know-who. He had something like 9 ints. his senior season at Akron, & carried that over to the NFL.

I know this might sound like overkill, but signing Smith could finally strengthen our weakest link, & take us to another level. Smith only had 2 ints. last year, but New Orleans only had 25 sacks last year, second worst only to Cleveland's 23. With our defensive front seven getting better all the time, we should have 10 sacks more than the 37 we had last year. The more pressure a QB receives, the more mistakes he makes. Smith is the kind of FS that takes advantage of mistakes.

He had 12 ints. his last 3 years with Tampa Bay. He'll make the difference in Dallas. Not only will he be the playmaker in centerfield we've been missing, but even more importantly, Smith will allow the Cowboys to unleash their deadliest weapon-Roy "The Hammer" Williams.

And it gives us a lot more flexibility if something unforeseen happens, like Roy suffering a major injury. We would really be in a mess if we had to depend on Bariault starting 8 or more games next year with that knee. Or a green Watkins defending the deep 1/3rd, getting confused and biting on playactions and pump fakes at critical times.
