Think it's fine as is.

Quarterbacks get paid top dollar because nowadays they are usually the main reason if your team wins or loses. Sans a few teams over the past 16 years, like the 2001 Ravens and the 2015 Broncos, the Quarterback is the main guy leading the team to victory.

It also makes teams focus on scouting, drafting and developing since they can no longer keep everyone.

Actually Lebron is way overpaid just to play a kids game, it's only a bargain when you compare it to the other players getting the max.. I get what you are saying but it seems to me basketball is more messed up than football at this point.

Considering basketball was created by Dr. James Naismith and played first by adults, your assessment is incorrect.

However, the NBA's guaranteed contract structure does harm the league overall.

He is not overpaid even though it's a "kids game". I hear this all the time and laugh. Lebron has a skill set that led than 1% of people in the world have, and he is at the top of that 1%. He is largely responsible for the value of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and moves the economy there. People pay to see him play. He is underpaid. It may be a kids game but he performs it for people at an exceptional level that he should command top dollar for those willing to see it.

As I said, it's not a kids game any more than football is if this guy wants to use that analogy. It was created and first played by adult men.

If it wasn't for the price ceiling then a team like the Knicks or Lakers would offer him $50m+. He has brought every team he has ever been on to the finals and won at all 3 stops. He can guard all 4 positions, average 30/7/5, and give you 40 mpg at high usage.

And I'm curious what you think should be the basis for what people get paid. The industry grosses billions of dollars no matter how you want to characterize the product. Should Hasbro not make any money because they actually make games that are marketed to kids? Of course not. Frankly you come across as jealous because they make more money than you. Envy is no basis for anything.

There are already price controls in place because given the scarcity of labor in pro sports they would otherwise have control eventually in a free market. What the NBA and the NFL do is the opposite of capitalism.

2. Fireman
3. Police
4. Teachers
5. Doctors
6. Pro athletes

And Yes, I am jealous of Lebron and even Bill Gates.

That was more to my point. I just think the pay scale in basketball messed up the league where as in football it has created a certain amount of parity.

As we get ready for the start of the season, potential trades, cuts, etc. I started looking to see where we are with the salary cap. I also wanted to look at the percentage paid to only a select few. I wanted to spark debate at the risk of being called names, etc. I like where the Cowboys are going with cap management, but I admit I don't know enough about it and have noticed that many on here seem to understand it much better than I.

Mods: if this thread needs to be moved, merged, etc. Please do so with my apologies in advance.

Questions I have:

  • Has the league ever explored having a vet exception for players?
    • For example, perhaps some percentage of Romo's contract wouldn't count.
  • Does the salary cap artificially set the market?
  • Should dead money not count or at least only a small percentage?
    • My thought is that this is the team's burden, but I can see the potential for abuse.
  • For the Cowboys, a team that is flux with an aging QB and rebuilding defense, is salary cap management even more important?

they still need to get to where they are going with the cap,2017 doesnt look good on paper-already 2mill over the projected cap and thats with loosing your 2 starting outside corners,no2 receiver and arguably most talented dline man in irving aswell as both church and jj.So it shud be another frugle free agency for us next year and using the draft to fill holes left unless the likes of kavon frazier, brown and mckinnon can all step up in a big way before we are suppossed to jump to big cap space-although tfred, martin and dlaw will eat a chunk of that

I didn't know that. I thought the cap management was better. Not a lot of dead money.

It is all about perception......DAL can have from 10m to 40m in cap space depending on how they deal with Romo, Dez, Crawford, Free and others........they aren't ever going to spend big in FA, they just don't believe in it.......

oh it is alot better, our cap space is actually taken up by people on the roster now instead of millions in dead money,we can easily free up a boat load for 2017 by pushing it down the line but i think they will stand pat for one more year until it jumps to like 50mill space in 2018-obviousley thats before fred, zac and dlaw are resigned.but plenty to be optomistic about on the way they have been managing the cap in recent and avoiding the impendind armagedon that the previous route we were travelling on would of brought

I agree Rock. That's a good point. I do hope they continue to draft better and perhaps without taking risks on injured players. Not that I don't like seeing them taking risks, but this team just isn't there yet in my opinion. We need to gather more talents on both sides of the ball and have enough depth to see the Special Teams to get better. Just my two cents for what that's worth.
