This year, the biggest chunk of our "Performance Based Pay" pool will go to Sam Hurd, who gets a check for an $215,495 -- which is almost 60 percent of his $360,000 base salary for 2007.

Performance Based Pay is actually based on playing time, not performance. For 2007, each team got a pool of $3,088,750 that was divided up between every player who played during the season. The more you played and the less money you made from the team, the bigger your PBP bonus (there's a formula used to determine how much each player gets). This money comes from a league-wide pool of money and DOES NOT COUNT AGAINST THE CAP. It's also in addition to any money the player gets paid by the team.

Here's what each player on our team gets for the 2007 season --

Sam Hurd, $215,495
Chris Canty, $181,528
Pat Watkins, $168,607
Jacques Reeves, $147,355
Justin Rogers, $132,269
Marion Barber, $126,037
Miles Austin, $114,444
Stephen Bowen, $106,385
Anthony Fasano, $104,865
Oliver Hoyte, $92,869
Deon Anderson, $87,760
Kevin Burnett, $85,738
Nathan Jones, $85,467
Jason Hatcher, $85,104
Tony Curtis, $82,590
Julius Jones, $70,128
Cory Procter, $69,751
Nick Folk, $68,858
Courtney Brown, $62,125
Pat McQuistan, $61,458
DeMarcus Ware, $58,387
Jay Ratliff, $49,613
Tank Johnson, $49,199
Andre Gurode, $48,959
Kyle Kosier, $48,611
Ken Hamlin, $48,285
Jason Witten, $44,982
Marc Colombo, $44,524
Terence Newman, $43,400
L.P. Ladouceur, $40,210
Patrick Crayton, $39,636
Leonard Davis, $34,767
Marcus Spears, $34,447
Roy Williams, $33,262
Bobby Carpenter, $29,539
Anthony Spencer, $27,395
Keith Davis, $26,875
Bradie James, $26,496
Akin Ayodele, $26,363
Remi Ayodele, $22,381
Evan Oglesby, $21,323
Alan Ball, $19,865
Greg Ellis, $19,243
Flozell Adams, $18,202
Tyson Thompson, $15,827
Anthony Henry, $14,046
Tony Romo, $13,094
Terrell Owens, $10,878
Brad Johnson, $8,274
Mat McBriar, $6,964
Joe Berger, $5,471
Doug Free, $4,936
Isaiah Stanback, $4,166
Jason Ferguson, $164
Terry Glenn, $138

The bonuses for Glenn and Ferguson are the two smallest for anyone in the league. The player who gets the most for 2007 is Steelers OT Willie Colon, who gets an extra $309,534.

so you're paid to play and when you do you're paid more?

i guess i don't get the idea behind this whole process. sign a multi-million $ contract (for some, not all) and yet you get more money for playing.

of which you were paid to do to begin with.

what's the goal here, adam? anyone?

Interesting info. I've always liked Sam Hurd. He's so fan-friendly with his online show. He's also one of the most accessible players where the fans are concerned. It's a shame that he might not even make the team.

Back to the list. $138 for Terry Glenn. I wonder what he will do with that? Fill up his tank? Oops, not enough.

I think the goal is for the players at the bottom of the roster, who don't get paid as much as the multi-millionaires at the top of the roster, who play more extensively than intended, get rewarded for their playing time. Bottom of the roster guys aren't exactly supposed to play as much. And when they do, that's where they get rewarded, especially if they're not a free agent.

That's my take on it.

It's a small way of trying to make sure unproven rookies (or players on their rookie contracts) who don't even play aren't getting more money than players who do play, and it benefits the minimum-salary veterans who play a lot, too. The money for the pool comes out of what had been going into the rookie pool. In 2002, the NFL began limiting the rookie pool increases, with the difference going into the PBP pool to be divided among players who actually play.

I think the goal is to reward the lower salaried guys(the ones who do not sign multi-million $ contracts) who over achieve or exceed expectations going into a season. It really does apply to a player like Hurd, although every player is given some amount of bonus money.

so i guess it's more like hurd played at a level that usually makes "X" amount of money, not his lower salary- so he gets compensated.

still funny glenn and fergie would get anything at all for playing time.

I hope Sam Hurd doesn't pull a Clayton Holmes with that money. $200K is sweet, but disappears real fast on the bling and "friends".

If you look at it from a real world perspective, let's say you have your normal duties, but were assigned a long-term special project. It required you to do different duties, and still perform your regular duties to which you probably put in a bunch of overtime. So your company rewards you with a nice bonus at the completion of the project for all your hard work.

I wish my corporation had performance-based pay.
I come to work every day and work every day.

Clayton Holmes stopped more bullets in one day than Keith Davis in a year.
