Sam Shields, "It was a catch"

Shields is right on two counts: (1) he did have great coverage and (2) it was a catch. Reminds me of Lynn Swann's two leaping catches in SB X over Mark Washington. Washington was right there both times but Swann made two outstanding catches, deserving of the game MVP that year. Blandino robbed Bryant of a spectacular play that would've gone down in Cowboys' playoff lore. I don't know how many guys make that play. Bryant is comparable to TO in terms of size and strength and yet can highpoint a ball like Swann. He can be an all-time great if he improves his route running and stays focused and motivated ala Michael Irvin.

Yrs. it was reminiscent of Swann's catch!

All this BS talk about the NE cheating is nothing. the big cheating scandal in the NFL is how they stole a playoff game from the Dallas Cowboys. the worst screw job in NFL playoff history. it's just sickening.i don't trust the NFL anymore.

Can this thread please keep going until training camp?

I will never let it go. Ask my wife. She's past rolling her eyes and now acts like she cares a little.

Recently we got together with her family. All diehard Colts fans. The Consensus was it was one of the biggest and worst missed calls ever. They normally live to mess with me. They seemed genuinely sorry.

It was top 5 easy screw jobs in NFL history. The Stealers Seahawks Super Bowl was worse because it involved several horrible calls.

Blandino is an idoit. I ask him at least once every day on Twitter to explain differnt aspects of the catch. He answers many people. He won't answer me because the questions I ask don't have a legit answer that doesn't involve his obvious incompetence.

He's a moron.

I will never let it go either. it was the worst screw job in NFL playoff history. i have never seen anything as blatant as this. yet this cheating fool Blandino, and the NFL is getting off scot free. this man needs to resign. he needs to go some where and hide in shame. he is a disgrace. your kin folk colts fan are right. anyone with a brain know the NFL and their head ref screwed the cowboys. and Blandino did it because of him being on the cowboys bus last season. and because of the picked up flag in the Lions game. HE NEED TO RESIGN OR BE FIRED.

It does kind of make you feel more for the SEA fans. As bad as it was for us, it would be much, much worse to see it happen on multiple one-sided calls and in the Superbowl.

I still agree with most of the calls made in that superbowl (not the penalty on Hasselback though). Now there may have been some missed calls going the other way, and to some extent that is going to happen in any game. I think missing calls is one thing, but blatantly overturning a correct call with replay is another story.

Really? Wow. I'm never one to blame refs much or to fall for conspiracy theories. That was the first time, though, that I'd watched an NFL game and seriously contemplated that it might well have been fixed. I thought that game was as badly officiated game as I'd ever seen. The phantom OPI that nullified the early touchdown. The phantom hold on the other deep play late in the game. And, yeah, that absolutely bizarre illegal block on a QB making a tackle. Crazy.

To his credit, Leavy years later did admit that his crew absolutely blew it:

“I know that I did my
best at that time, but it wasn’t good enough,” Leavy continued. “When we make mistakes,
you got to step up and own them. It’s something that all officials have
to deal with, but unfortunately when you have to deal with it in the
Super Bowl it’s difficult.”

Coincidentally, this his how the league should have handled the blown reversal on the Dez catch. Instead of *****-footing around what everybody actually knows and hiding behind a misinterpretation of the rules.

Well said.

Maybe in 5-10 years, one of them will own up to it.

Don't hold your breath. There are enough people who, based on how the rules interpret a catch, say it wasn't a catch.

You can argue all you want that they're wrong, but the way they call catches now days, there's an argument to be made on both sides. It's not like the catch Dez made two years ago when one foot was down and the other out of bounds, negating a potential game-winning score against the Giants. That play was overruled (if memory serves me correctly) and Dez wasn't credited with a touchdown. That play was pretty clear upon replay.

In the Dez catch, I heard just as many people saying it wasn't a catch as people saying it was - based on the interpretation of the rules. Cris Carter and Ryan Clark, just to name a few. And this isn't to argue this issue AGAIN. It's merely to explain that it's no where near a majority opinion that this was definitely a catch, based on how the NFL currently interprets a catch. That's why I doubt you'll hear an apology. At best you may hear, "I think it was a catch. But according to the rules, it wasn't." That's my position. I think it was a clear catch. But how the rules are interpreted, I can see how it was ruled a non-catch.

Sam Shields on Dez Bryant: "It was a catch. I was in great coverage...he made a helluva catch" http://t.co/kfoufwxGqe http://t.co/28nP4EOYLy

I made an earlier thread saying basically this . It was deleted but the thread was "he made the play he beat his man ".

Bottom line he beasted. Everything about what he did was awesome footballing

Like the litle girl in "Frozen' sang to Snow White and her 7 Smurfs, "Let it go."

The official closest to the play isn't one of them, and there are enough people who know that there needs to be indisputable visual evidence to overturn his call on the field.

Compare Blandino's explanation of why that catch was upheld with his explanation of why Dez's catch was overturned.

"Did the receiver have both feet down prior to him getting contacted, which sent him to the ground," Blandino said during his weekly segment on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access." "If that's the case, then he doesn't have to hold onto it when he hits the ground...We do feel that the ruling on the field stands, meaning that there wasn't enough evidence to overturn it."

Yawn.
You're likely not going to get an apology no matter how much compare and contrast you engage in. The issue of possession is one that happens often throughout the season. The league, to my knowledge, hasn't apologized for ruling a catch a non-catch or a non-catch a catch because of the current rule. And I doubt they'll issue an apology for Dez's catch.
That's all I'm addressing at this point.

I thought the OPI and hold were anything but phantom, especially the OPI. I thought that was textbook.

Get back to me when you can address my points.

I don't have to address your point. I merely said I doubt very seriously the league apologizes. You can make whatever argument you want. That doesn't change my point.
