We were supposedly beyond trouble last year by depending upon McClain.
It is a long off-season so we'll see how it shakes out.

Hitchens is a much bigger/thicker player than Durant physically which can help with staying healthy.

Right now TODAY Dallas would start:
Will: Hitchens Mike:Sean Sam: Wilber
That's not bad. Not good and we have zero depth but with all but 1 day of FA left and the draft to come I'll resist panicking.

That's pretty bad considering I don't except a full 16 games from Lee. Wilber has proven to be pretty awful. The coaches hated Carter and they still couldn't warrant starting Wilber over him. We're in a much worse position at LB right now than we were last year. Even after the Lee injury, we had McClain, Carter and Durant. And then Hitchens proved to be a good player. I'd rather resign McClain so that we aren't forced to spend a 1st rounder on LB.

It is poor.

But they aren't playing games for a while.

There will be some change there.

I'm of the mindset, like many others, that you build through the draft by acquiring the best talent. Free agency is to fill holes, not to get stars. You should compile a team through free agency that you would be comfortable going into the regular season with. Then you add any icing on the cake via the draft. The point is, you fill your needs via free agency, then you add some stars via the draft. LB is currently a big need and we need to address it via free agency. That doesn't mean we can't spend a 1st round pick on LB even if we resign McClain. It just means we don't have to. We're currently awful at LB and there aren't many affordable free agents out there who could fill that void. McClain is one of them.

Carter is as physically gifted a player as you can get at that position. I really worry the light was coming on and this one becomes a huge rue

I think Carter will be another Kevin Burnett. Burnett never put it all together in Dallas but ended up with a pretty solid 10 year career.

@TomPelissero: Bruce Carter's 4-year, $17M deal with #Bucs really can be a 1-year, $4.25M pact. No other guarantees. $750K roster bonus due March 2016.

Would've done this.

Wow. That's a shockingly low risk contract.

I liked Tim MacMahon's quote about Carter having a high potential for "getting fat and happy" now. But, Tampa Bay signed him to a smart contract if what I'm hearing is true.

I think they need to close the deal with Rolando as well, it would not solve all your Lb issues but it would help to have him locked up.

The draft is the place to build the team, I definitely see a Lb being taken at some point but I do think they will troll the bargain bin for more Lb help even if the sign Rolando.

According to who? Linebackers with that kind of speed 4.5 ish that can cover the pass are very valuable.

Provided they don't get confused by the coverage scheme or they aren't caught up in play action.

Hey, I agree Carter had the physical skills, but the game requires more than that if a guy is going to be an overall good player.

Carter played very well down the stretch, including leading the league in INT's for LB's. We lost a good player, one of our best athletes at 27 years old.

He always took at least a season to "figure out" what the heck he's supposed to do.
And also had some real, mortifying brain farts in the process.

I don't like that he's gone, but I'm willing to bet real American Dollars that he's not going to set the world on fire his first year there.

Of course he won't.

His motivation has been questions and now he has some coin in his pocket.

I've read that before. The light appears to flicker on and off from game to game with him.

Not to mention, his best year by and far was also his contract year....with only 68 tackles mind you.
