Most of this board don't think it is a big deal. Wait till this coming year people will be eating those words. Lb position was one of our strengths and unless we sign some that will not be the case this coming year.

$5 million a year is a bit more than I'd pay him, but there didn't seem to be any real interest in bringing him back.

5M per year when you're running out of LBs is more than a little and less than a lot. If they thought he was a critical resource then they gambled some. Keep in mind they likely have some fall back candidates tho but still a risk. I still get back to this isn't enough money for that to be the answer. Some one doesn't trust the guy IMO.

The "bad" Bruce Carter who sometimes didn't give much effort outshined the "good" Bruce Carter who looks like a pro-bowler at times.

Guys like that are coach killers.

See I disagree.

He was so good at times that it made me forget about the bad Bruce Carter.

He was a playmaker on defense and that is something we needed.

His best football is still in front of him and all that we invested in him is going to be headed to Tampa.

Using a 2nd round pick and basically waiting on him for a year? Then we see him go on a couple of stretches where he looks like a top NFL LB just to let him walk?

What a waste.

Its funny, we signed Durant for what 3 million per as a 27 year old coming off a 100 tackle season. He struggle with injuries and effectivness in 2013, has a couple decent games before getting hurt this year and bam, he is suddenly a commedity

LOL!

Yeah, I thought that was funny too.

It goes to show you NFL front offices aren't full of the bright folks many of us think they are.

5 mill a year for a horribly inconsistent LB? That's a terrible deal

I agree. 5mil per year is a big chunk of money for a guy that you could not trust. I'm not at all surprised that Carter signed elsewhere. The writing was clearly on the wall. Carter is exactly the type of player that looks more attractive from the outside (another team). When you look at our collection of FA's this year. Parnell, Harris and Carter were easily gone.

To me Durant was more of a surprise but he got a bigger paycheck from someone else after stepping up his game this past year. Injury aside, Durant was nothing special until something clicked for him this year. Maybe it was him playing the weak side and that was a better fit for him. Right now it looks like our signing of Rivers is very similar to our signing of Durant from Detroit. There were pretty low expectations and he filled in without making a big splash. We got what we paid for, then we got more than we paid for for the 6 games this year. He played much better, but then got hurt. Rivers could pan out the same way for us.

Rivers is not terrible and has started games before... just like the Detroit era Durant.

On another note, just as I assumed Carter would be gone, I assume –and have assumed from the beginning– that McClain will be back. We'll see how that goes.

For me...with Lee back and Hichens on team.... I only wanted McClain back out of those 3.with lee, romac, and hitch...that would be a really good lb core.

I agree. If we can rely on those three guys, we only need Lee-Hitchens-McClain. We run 3 LBers 45% of the time in the base defense and 2 LBers 55% of the time in the nickel defense. Problem is, even last year when all 5 of those LBers were under contract, only about 2 of them were healthy at any given time. Not including playoffs, Lee missed 16 games, Durant missed 10 games, Carter missed 3 games, and McClain missed 3 games. And then Lee and Durant were out for the playoffs and I remember McClain barely played a quarter in two combined playoff games. Hitchens was the only player who didn't miss any time.

I'm confident in Hitchens' health, and I'd be confident in McClain's health with a full year of practice/games under his belt. I've lost almost all faith in Lee. Anything from him would be a plus. So at the moment, we only have one reliable LBer on the roster. We need at least one more, and McClain seems to be the only one left. I'd hate to rely on a rookie or a bust like Keith Rivers this season. We really need to resign McClain. That's a bigger must than Murray at the moment.

Sorry if someone asked, but we get any comp picks next year possibly?

More than likely.

It will depend on net unrestricted free agent lost versus signed, average annual value of their contracts, playing time and post-season awards.

Here's who've we've lost so far.

Jermey Parnell ($6.4M/yr) - 4th rd comp
Bruce Carter ($5.125M/yr) - 5th rd comp
Justin Durant ($3.6M/yr) - 6th rd comp
Dwayne Harris ($3.5M/yr) - 6th rd comp

Someone check the Tampa Bay fan forum and get back with us. I'll bet they are not dancing in the streets.

Yeah, I'm glad we didn't pay him that. IMO he never turned out to be the guy we thought we were getting as a "steal" in the draft. Solid player, but I'm glad we've moved on. Hoping for Ro to get resigned and draft someone like Eric Kendricks.

Carter was the only dependable LB we had all season.

I just hope people remember this when our economic efficient players aren't making any plays.

But just think how good it will feel with those extra dollars on the ledger! lol

Well, let's just hope there's a plan and Marinelli has some say in the matter,,,
