More than likely.

It will depend on net unrestricted free agent lost versus signed, average annual value of their contracts, playing time and post-season awards.

Here's who've we've lost so far.

Jermey Parnell ($6.4M/yr) - 4th rd comp
Bruce Carter ($5.125M/yr) - 5th rd comp
Justin Durant ($3.6M/yr) - 6th rd comp
Dwayne Harris ($3.5M/yr) - 6th rd comp

Thanks for info!

My problem isn't that they let him go, but that we really did get much value for what we invested (second round pick and redshirt season) for basically three injury plagued, up and down seasons.

That said, I am not sure the FO made the incorrect move. Sometimes it better to cut losses than throw good money after bad.

5 mil / year is a lot

Carter was playing well late last year though.
3 ints in the last 3 games
had that 11 tackle game the last game of the reg season

He was getting comfortable

He's so athletic, but also a tease. If he stays healthy, he'll play well for Lovie Smith. Big "if"

5M per year is currently the 35th highest salary for a linebacker on an annual basis. We don't know the details of the contract though and right now all that is reported is 4 years and 20 million. Many current contracts are not intended to ride the length of the contract. We have to wait on the details as to what is guaranteed and how it is structured.

5 million a year is not that bad. Especially after missing out on Durant. I thought Carter was going to command more.

Yes it is bad... very bad.

Carter isn't the 35th or even the 65th best LB in the NFL.

Ridiculous contract.

For me...with Lee back and Hichens on team.... I only wanted McClain back out of those 3.with lee, romac, and hitch...that would be a really good lb core.

Yes but with no depth at all and lees Injury history though

Ridiculous contract.

That's calculating his contract as 4yrs/20M = 5M/yr. That is highly unlikely as he will very likely get guaranteed money up front leaving the rest to be salary. I'd guess he got 6-8 mil up front as a bonus with say the rest at 3M/yr averaged. That is also likely to be lower than that with years 3 and 4 voidable and at higher salaries. Just a guess but likely 1.5M/yr this and next year with some acceleration thereafter. Even if not you're talking 2-3M/yr after some bonus which would make him the 58th paid LB at most and likely in the 80s.

I don't think Dallas wanted Carter back.
Just don't think they bought him as a professional.

He could prove them VERY wrong in time but his inconsistency while here was pretty easy to see.

I agree. I think he has the talent to be one of the better LBers in the league, but I don't think the coaching staff really liked him. He had a lot of ups and downs, both mentally and physically, since the switch to a 4-3. I think we were bound to part ways with Carter. I'm also not too upset with losing Durant since I think Hitchens is very similar. They're both hard workers who can play any LB position. And Hitchens is younger, cheaper and healthier. But we really need to make an effort to keep McClain. He's a special player. A headcase, yes, but he has elite talent and high football IQ. He can man the Mike and have Lee move to WLB. I'd be okay with Hitchens-McClain-Lee IF Lee can prove to stay healthy. But if one of them gets hurt, we could be in trouble. And if we don't bring back McClain then we're already in trouble. And if we don't bring back McClain AND one of them gets hurt... well, you get the picture.

We were supposedly beyond trouble last year by depending upon McClain.
It is a long off-season so we'll see how it shakes out.

Hitchens is a much bigger/thicker player than Durant physically which can help with staying healthy.

Right now TODAY Dallas would start:
Will: Hitchens Mike:Sean Sam: Wilber
That's not bad. Not good and we have zero depth but with all but 1 day of FA left and the draft to come I'll resist panicking.

If we sign him, the starting LBs will be better this year than last year

Hitchens-McClain-Lee

But they'd have to really work on depth

At this point, I think the plan has always been to sign one of the three free agents (Durant, McClain, Carter) to pair with Lee and Hitchens. It appears our first choice was Durant, perhaps because we thought he'd be cheaper to re-sign. The second appears to be McClain. And we never got to Carter.

@TomPelissero: Bruce Carter's 4-year, $17M deal with #Bucs really can be a 1-year, $4.25M pact. No other guarantees. $750K roster bonus due March 2016.

Would've done this.
