 Paying him that much would be foolish. He's not a free agent. You have him signed for 2 years at $13.5M/yr. Giving up that leverage and paying him as the top G would be unnecessary stupidity. ZM has very little leverage, would be idiocy to give in to him.
No idiocy would be listen to fans like you who have no idea what you're talking about. You can frontload money and spread out the rest through 4 years for the best guard in football.

Stop talking about this because you clearly have no clue. And his leverage here is not being in camp and not being there for the opener or more. He'll get his contract and we can watch you hate Martin the rest of the season and blame the Ls on him every time he passes gas on the field.

Great job alienating the best player at his position on the team.
Nobody said anybody was ‘alienated’. Martin is under contract through 2024. I’ve about had it with players signing deals and then expressing their disappointment with the deal THEY signed.

we're talking about Zack Martin. He's the starting Right Guard.
At the moment he is, but he's also coming up to 33 and never had an injury....as we know the end can be unexpected and quick, he's just safeguarding that $14m salary in 2024.

Not accurate. If you're looking to be a contrarian, go elsewhere.

2018 weeks 9-17 he missed games from a knee injury.
2019 week 7 from a back injury.
2020 week 7 from a concussion and week 13 out for a calf injury.

That's not counting the injuries he played with.

And him replace him with who?

He’s elite.

For 1.7 mil, he can afford to sit out 2023.

Gonna cost $$$.
thats why we have a draft and free agency. I am sayin tinker with the current deal, throw some money at him, but let him play on the deal he signed. We can Jerrymander it giving him some cash. Im not doing anything drastic for a 33-year-old player.

In that case he's certainly looking to safeguard his money.

hes 33. We have a cap. We have young key guys we need to sign. 0 way I am wrecking the chances of signing guys for a 33 year old guard.

Neither are in the wrong, one for muting a restructure (to safeguard money) and the other denying it.
that being said, I think it all works out. Jerry isn't giving the farm away on him. He can't. We have 2 many other deals that need done. Its business.

I will say this, if we sign him for a big deal, tearing up his current deal, who are we not resigning? Diggs? WHO we releasing or trading? We would have to dump a guy/salary.

 Spreading the $ out is not the issue. He has 2 years on his deal. The reason he's not the top paid guard is he's not a FA. Caving to every player who wants a raise is salary cap stupidity. Martin has 2 options: retire, which he won't do with almost $30M already on the table, or play on his current deal. Giving him a little extra $ to soothe his ego might make sense, but bringing his salary up to the top of the league would be foolish. By NFL standards, Martin is an old man, and should be paid accordingly, unless you want another massive dead cap hit.

Yeah, I don't mind throwing a little his way, but another huge extension? No.

exactly. Which means we'd need to not resign Diggs or someone like that. Foolish is right.

Again, are we sure he wants more money (or years), or that he wants the contract restructured? The report didn't mention more money (though I'm sure he wouldn't say no), I'd think his main concern is about the possibility about being cut (this time next year).
Granted there's not much chance of him being cut, but a combination of: a marked drop in form (even to the average), injury and the FO getting fleeced in contract negotiations may mean cutting him and saving $14m becomes an option.
