He isn't just a blocking TE.

And there weren't more pressing needs to the Cowboys. They wanted to shore up their blocking and replace Schultz.
They under valued what we had in Ferguson. Like we always do at TE. Absolutely no reason to bring Witten back from retirement. The pressing need was and is OLine.

Say what you want about Schoonmaker in the passing game, he's basically what we ordered when we opted for a blocking TE.

I saw him making way a few times out there, so I know he's been doing his job in that regard.|

Pollard, too, on the touchdown to Ferg. Pollard is money pass-blocking in the redzone.
I saw one block and he was more kind of just in the right place than he was actually blocking.

You don't waste a 2nd round pick on a blocking TE. If that's all he ever is, he was an awful waste of draft capital.
Like I said, in due time, he'll likely get better. Same as it was for Ferguson last year. He's way better this year. We just saw flashes last year. I have no doubts Schoon gets better in time. To me, he looks ready to be more involved.

Good TEs emerge immediately! Just look at Witten -- 350 yard as a rookie! Dalton Schultz 120 yards over his first two seasons!

Thank you for such a well researched post!

That was his role.. If you look at the play, it never was going to be a physical-level block, he just had to be in the way of the defender and by that time Lamb is through the hole. It's more of a heads up block. But you still need it.

My theory is they knew about his plantar fascitis, and still thought he was the best player at the position, at that time.

He's not LaPorta or whatever, but those players were off the board by that time. We drafted Mazi. And we're much better against the run because of it.

I'm not sure that any team would draft a TE in the 2nd who can't catch. We swung and missed Shoon.

1st and 2nd round picks are not supposed to be development players. If that is all that is available trade back for more picks.

He's a huge liability in the passing game.

I shudder when I think of some of the other TE's that were drafted this year. LaPorta, Kincaid, Mayer
You paid no attention to what the OP said and instead focused all on the negative. Typical Cowboy fan.

Be careful your making an argument not to draft a TE in the 2nd round.

Kelsie was drafted in the 3rd round. Kittle in the fifth. So why waste a pick early to develop a TE?

I still wish we went with Oline rather than TE. I really wanted Torrance. This was a Jerry pick 100%. I guess to keep him happy and to stroke his ego the team is obliged to always give him the 2nd round.

I didn’t like the Schoon pick then and I don’t like it now but make no mistake he’s gonna be a good player for us. I just don’t agree with the pick especially after what Hendershot and Ferg showed us but Schoon is going to good be good he’s just dealing with rookie bumps right now.

I dont know what happened with him in the passing game. I watch Michigan Football he was a good target in his last college year.

So i guess its more adapting, missing TC and the role he has now.

Still i didnt like the pick in the 2nd. Also didnt know why they felt the need to press for a TE in the 2nd when the top 3 TEs were gone just because Dalton Schultz was gone.

Everyone knew Fergie had full time starting potential.

I hated the pick then as it wasn’t necessary and I hate it now

In my mind even though it’s early the draft nets a D

Unless bass and Richards pans out

They reached for him because they told themselves they HAD to have a TE and there was a run on them.

Same deal in 2021. HAD to have a corner so they took Joseph.

I really don’t buy that’s it’s Jerry’s round to play with. They fixate on whatever position they didn’t get in round one because that’s how they fill holes when it should be done via FA and draft BPA.
