David LaFleur the sequel.
I get the same feeling about Schoonmaker. At least he wasn't a first round pick like LaFleur. But like LaFleur he seems to be weak with the ball in his hands, if he ever gets the ball in his hands. LaFleur was another big TE who didn't know how to use his size when he had the ball in his hands. He went down with the slightest hit. We used to call him "Tim-ber" LaFleur.

I think Schoonmaker was a forced pick. I don't know why they went for a TE so early in the draft but I am pretty sure it was a pick for a perceived need. I just find it hard to believe they couldn't find a blocking TE who can't catch later in the draft. If he can block then he fills a serious need for Dallas but OL depth might have been a bigger need.

Those were all drafted AHEAD of Schoon. He was taken late 2nd. Once Schoon gets this passing game figured out and gets some targets he will surprise folks. He is huge and can run. For now the OP is right, throwing some good blocks out there.
Why should he get targets? He can't catch.

They did draft OL. Might not have been who you wanted or what round you wanted.

Richards is going to be really good in this league. Not saying all-pro or anything but a player that can be counted on
Im aware that drafted a project late and I hope he pans out sooner not later. We are in win now mode. Reaching for the TE that wasnt not a need was dumb especially with the talent available.

Personally, I would have prolly drafted Josh Downs. But he was high on my radar. Just thought he was BPA and solved a future need. I see why they drafted Schoonmaker. We have the pass-catching TEs already with Ferguson.. We needed the best blocking TE we could find. That's what we wanted. That's what we got.

They didn't even have to teach him much there, given he wasn't active in camp. Just wait until he actually attends camp. I think it'll be fair to judge him then. The fact he can already block, and play that aspect of the game cohesively ought to be re-assuring. He may be 25, but it's still his first year in the league. The passing game will come along.

You saw it vs. the Eagles. He was just short by a few. Not all his fall if you look where the ball was placed, just not the best execution. But ability is there.
I liked Downs, but one thing with him is he is a pure slot guy. I dont think the Cowboys are going to be looking for that that high. I think a top 60 pick at WR they will probably want a WR that can play outside and slot. They want to move Lamb around. Taking a slot or outside only guy limits that some. Outside the top 60, its probably different

He's a huge liability in the passing game.

I shudder when I think of some of the other TE's that were drafted this year. LaPorta, Kincaid, Mayer
He’s a rookie so I wouldn’t expect him to be a great reciever. Schultz too time too. Let’s see what he is next year. But he is a solid blocker which allows you to move on from McKeon if they want to

They under valued what we had in Ferguson. Like we always do at TE. Absolutely no reason to bring Witten back from retirement. The pressing need was and is OLine.
I don’t think they under valued him. But Schultz left and McKeon is soon to leave so they felt ferg would replace Schultz and shoon can replace NcKeon as the blocking te and maybe develop into a better passing target than McKeon has

We could have found a blocking TE later in the draft. It makes no sense drafting a TE with a second round pick who doesn’t have good receiving skills. Just a waste of another second round pick. Looked like he had hands of stone on that pass he dropped yesterday. He gets an opportunity and on an easy pitch and catch he can’t make the play.

I suspect they think they can develop his recieving skills. A bit too early to judge a player. Let’s see how he develops

With the development of Jake Ferguson, it’s going to be tough for Schoonmaker to ever live up to his draft status. Ferguson showed potential as a good receiving TE as a rookie and continues to get better and better. He and Dak our developing some good chemistry. Granted it’s still early with Schoonmaker but I’ll go on record right now and say he’ll never see a second contract with the team.

He is playing on a team that should be 7 and 3 after next week. He wouldn't be playing if he wasn't needed.

we need an offensive lineman. Maybe we can fatten this guy up and move him to the offensive line
