He missed all of camp. Hoping he will make a jump next year. Of course he will be 33 years old by then

most fans are plenty aware of that. I think there are many of us who believe that TE wasnt that big of a need and fergy has confirmed that . Schoon is a long term project we need impact players now. The only reason hes getting the snaps he is because Payton got hurt and he was foolishly drafted that high.

Im not as salty as i was once i heard they plan on keeping Tyler at guard so if that truly is the plan then it wouldnt have made sense to draft any of the guards and they seem to like position flex. In terms of mazi I dont believe he was worth the first round pick either but like you say he can be considered second.I would have rather waited on DT and grabbed RB in first. DT has alwasy been a need they avoided but hankins and Osa seem to manning it well.

Maybe when the playoffs are here the light bulb will click on for Mazi. Sadly i dont see much beyond a blocking TE in schoon hoefully Im wrong and you dont waste that capital on one of those. My favorite pick in the draft is on IR so needless to say my intial thought on the draft are low but it could pan out to better in a few years

hopefully im around to have that conversation
Schoomaker is already playing around 28 plays a game. It's not like they aren't using him. They would have missed out on dtackle if they didn't take M. Smith at 26.

Let’s revisit this convo later we aren’t gonna agree here I don’t believe but perhaps those 2 will do something of worthiness by then

Although both actually did better last game . Maybe I’m still to pissed at schoons terrible route run and subsequent tackle short of goal against Philly also fergy didn’t help matters much on that route

Those were all drafted AHEAD of Schoon. He was taken late 2nd. Once Schoon gets this passing game figured out and gets some targets he will surprise folks. He is huge and can run. For now the OP is right, throwing some good blocks out there.
Hes 25 years old a year older than ferguson. When do you expect him to figure it out?

Schoon will be fine. But I think he was picked 2 rounds too soon. Fergy is better as a weapon but schoon will do ok in this offense as a safety net. It may take him a couple years to really get going as a receiver but that's ok.
We could’ve had Marvin Mims Jr, Torrence, or Chase/Sydney Brown over this dude. To be honest, we should’ve moved up for Charbonnet.

What exactly is being fine mean? Every time a player isn’t panning out fans say don’t worry they’ll be fine. Someone posted something by PFF a few weeks ago and Schoonmaker’s blocking didn’t even grade out that well. You’re talking about in a couple of years he may be okay as a receiver? He may not be here a couple of more years. I wouldn’t be surprised if the team tries to trade him at some point after the season or during next season. Even Peyton Hendershot has shown more than him. Plus we have John Stephens who was getting great reviews in training camp until he was injured.
Fine is average to maybe slightly above. Schoon is older and won't get more athletic but if he just improves in catching the passes that hit his hands/body then he would be servicable at least.

I don't know college players but torrance was a guard right?

I doubt the Cowboys had slightly above average in mind when they drafted him in the second round, especially considering Sam Laporta was high on their wish list and he’s had a great rookie season. Serviceable isn’t going to keep Schoonmaker here very long. I think the odds are pretty high the Cowboys will be looking to try and trade him at some point.

No one drafts a blocking only TE in the 2nd round. That's a premium pick. Schoon really needs to work on his hands in the offseason.

They would have possibly missed out on Mazi not necessarily DT

Maybe I’m wrong here but you draft impact players in the first 2 rounds projects for later rounds

I just feel like our first 2 picks are projects and we’re in win now mode I think we could have done better

TE wasn’t even a need

Go back and look at the other picks in the draft and tell me where they would have been able to get a decent 1 tech.
I’d have to know how they are playing with other teams but this far Mazi has been underwhelming until the giants game we’ll see if he builds on it

So at this point i wouldn’t even call Mazi decent

I doubt they trade him. Likely just keep him for the duration of his contract. fergy might get himself a second contract.

We have a number of TE’s and he’ll never overtake Ferguson who continues to improve every week. We traded TE Anthony Fasano after two seasons who was a second round pick. We traded him and another player for a fourth round pick. If they don’t like what they’re seeing with Schoonmaker I could see us trying to trade him rather than allowing him to play out his contract and letting him walk. I’m not saying we’re going to trade him but it’s a possibility.
