I think the player himself is a very decent TE and will only get better. Its just that in the 2nd, it seems like he was a reach, like Mazi in the 1st. Were they a reach? At THIS moment: yes. In three years: who knows?

Schoonmaker looks like a clunky stiff in the pass game.
Agreed. He has measurables and straight line speed, but does appear clunky.
Of course it took Schultz a couple of years to catch on. 54 catches in 37 career college games, that's not much of a track record for Schoon.

To give you an idea about Michigan. They thew 8 passes for 60 yards against Penn State and they have a qb projected to go in the 1st round.

He is TE2 and being asked to block at the poa and seeing success. His role is a smaller one seeing that we play 11 most of the time and Ferg is progressing nicely. He is doing what he is asked to do. I see WR3 as much more of a ? than TE2.

They tried re-signing Schultz prior to franchising him. He developed into a good receiving TE and they wanted to keep him. They franchised him because he was valuable to our offense and they couldn’t afford to lose him, Amari Cooper and Cedric Wilson. They traded Amari and allowed Wilson to walk. We couldn’t lose our number one WR and our starting TE. Schoonmaker will not be in the plans if he doesn’t develop into a good receiver. He’s not getting many opportunities in the passing game because he’s not a good receiver and Ferguson continues to move way ahead of him.
I agree but the same situation could happen to ferg, you just don’t know. It’s important to always have options. I remember having to tag Spencer because we didn’t have options. It’s always best to have them

The same situation could happen to Ferguson if he doesn’t develop into an elite TE. We never had this dilemma with Jason Witten because he was a great TE. We moved on from the other TEs but not him. We tagged Spencer because he never developed into an elite player that we wanted to commit a big contract to, but he was a good player. We wanted to hang onto him without committing to him long-term so we tagged him.

I don't dislike Schoon as much as I dislike the pick. There were more pressing needs at the #2 draft slot.

That's way too high for a blocking TE. He let a perfectly thrown ball bounce right off both hands today.

I'm more than willing to reevaluate in time, but I continue to believe that he was a massive reach in round 2. I sincerely hope to be proven wrong in time, but that's the way I see it.
I've seen Ferguson drop passes that hit him on the hands, but Ferguson is still a good TE. Schoon can still develop into a good TE. The fact that he was drafted at a point where we might have preferred a different kind of pick is not Schoon's fault, that's on Jerry. Meantime, he's a Cowboy and I'm in his corner.

Lol, I love these comments. Reminds me of the people who claimed our kicker sucked in camp. Hilarious, thank you.
Problem is Schoonmaker didn’t look good in camp and he still hasn’t looked good 9 games into the regular season. Are you saying you’ve been pleased with him? lol

Agreed. Would have been fine with him as a prospect in the 4th round. There was a run on TEs early which boosted his stock IMO.

He was not the 58th best prospect available in the draft.

Thanks Mickey.
BDC has supported that pick since day 1 in fact I think he supports the 23 draft in general so I admire his resolve

At this point we are in win now mode and I don’t have patience to wait for developmental players so I am not enamored with our 23 draft and I hated the 2nd rounder . I wanted RB bad and I think we screwed the pooch with that . I also wanted to improve line neither was done

I definitely didn’t feel TE was a need but I guess with the hendershot injury the FO now gets bailed out for their 2nd round pick

They reached for him because they told themselves they HAD to have a TE and there was a run on them.

Same deal in 2021. HAD to have a corner so they took Joseph.

I really don’t buy that’s it’s Jerry’s round to play with. They fixate on whatever position they didn’t get in round one because that’s how they fill holes when it should be done via FA and draft BPA.
Exactly, but they do tend to gamble on injured players. You can go all the way back to Bruce Carter and Sean Lee. We like to take guys who have dropped out of round 1 due to injury. This is how ended up with Jaylon Smith as well. It’s Jerry trying to scoop the league and look smart.

What I hate is this trend of just letting the board fall as it may. We know we need a TE and the best ones are within reach, but we sit back and take Schoon bc he’s the next highest TE on our board. We absolutely fixated on the position rather than targeting a player. It’s almost like our attitude is “ well, any of these guys can work” and we are not partial or see differences between any of them.
