Agreed. Would have been fine with him as a prospect in the 4th round. There was a run on TEs early which boosted his stock IMO.

He was not the 58th best prospect available in the draft.
There is no way that he would have been available when the Cowboys picked in the 3rd round and the Cowboys got Overshown in that round.

that may be or may not be this is just one of the predraft reports there are more. Cowboys put TE as a bigger priority than it was and they had their mind set on earlier guys got spooked and they overdrafted. They did the same thing with Mazi Smith

This draft could playout ok in long term but for a team thats in win now mode it sucks. The best pick of the draft is on IR in Overshown. But who am I.

They could have had laporta if it was such a big need which IMO it wasnt. With reports coming out that they intend to keep Tlyer Smith at OG then i am more accepting of them passing on Torrence and Avilia. and the cowboys tend to favor position flex guys anyway. God i hope we stay healthy our line is worrisome and we need RB in the worst way

The running game has got to get better or were screwed.
It doesn't suck. At least not yet. We are screwed? They will be 7 and 3 after next week's game. The Giants and Panthers are screwed. Not the Cowboys.

We can agree to disagree on that part of it. in terms of immediate impact is what I as referring to i believe and I referenced it could playout ok. Bleacher report link wouldnt post so there must be a reason im not to post it. when we get to the playoffs against solid teams if we are 1 dimensional again like we were last year well be going home 1st round.I guess I thought you would know what i meant about being screwed but maybe not.

Part of the reason we lost in playoffs was no run game to speak of once pollard went down. For that matter it wasnt that much prior to him going down but at least there was at least 2 viable threats then when he went down there was 1.

fans who think they're experts around here dont understand that when you're picking that late it's like you're picking in the next round so basically he's the third round pick. and given that they can't wait because they might be gone by the time they pick again.... i'm sure they would love to have got Mazi in the 2nd and schoon in the third but they know mote then fan who would take the player before they pick next if they pass on them..

most fans are plenty aware of that. I think there are many of us who believe that TE wasnt that big of a need and fergy has confirmed that . Schoon is a long term project we need impact players now. The only reason hes getting the snaps he is because Payton got hurt and he was foolishly drafted that high.

Im not as salty as i was once i heard they plan on keeping Tyler at guard so if that truly is the plan then it wouldnt have made sense to draft any of the guards and they seem to like position flex. In terms of mazi I dont believe he was worth the first round pick either but like you say he can be considered second.I would have rather waited on DT and grabbed RB in first. DT has alwasy been a need they avoided but hankins and Osa seem to manning it well.

Maybe when the playoffs are here the light bulb will click on for Mazi. Sadly i dont see much beyond a blocking TE in schoon hoefully Im wrong and you dont waste that capital on one of those. My favorite pick in the draft is on IR so needless to say my intial thought on the draft are low but it could pan out to better in a few years

hopefully im around to have that conversation

Those were all drafted AHEAD of Schoon. He was taken late 2nd. Once Schoon gets this passing game figured out and gets some targets he will surprise folks. He is huge and can run. For now the OP is right, throwing some good blocks out there.
Exactly. Also I have a feeling Schoon is going to end up being really good he just is behind Ferguson this year.

As a receiver he’s way behind Ferguson. Ferguson showed promise as a rookie and continues to improve. Schoonmaker appears to be the least talented receiver of the TEs we’ve drafted in the second round.

How profound. Schoonmaker wasn’t the 58th best player on the board. What are you failing to compute?

Say what you want about Schoonmaker in the passing game, he's basically what we ordered when we opted for a blocking TE.

I saw him making way a few times out there, so I know he's been doing his job in that regard.|

Pollard, too, on the touchdown to Ferg. Pollard is money pass-blocking in the redzone.
Thats why he was a necessity for MM, may not be the highest graded pass catching TE in this class by a considerable measure, but he might be the best blocking TE, or one that understands their primary role, and is willing to buy into MM scheme asap.

These are the rookie receiving numbers of the TE’s we drafted in the second round.

Anthony Fasano, 14 for 126 yards.
Martellus Bennett, 20 for 283 and 4 TDs.
Gavin Escobar, 9 for 134 and 2 TDs.
Luke Schoonmaker, 3 for 14 and 1 TD after 9 games.

By the way, the other three had Jason Witten a future Hall of Famer playing ahead of them.

Ferguson and Hendershot still flashed with the limited opportunities they got last season behind Schultz (both finished with over 100 yards). Schoonmaker might not get 50 yards this season despite getting on the field plenty as the #2 TE once Hendershot got hurt. He has been THE definition of Just A Guy out there so far...

Schoon will be fine. But I think he was picked 2 rounds too soon. Fergy is better as a weapon but schoon will do ok in this offense as a safety net. It may take him a couple years to really get going as a receiver but that's ok.

What exactly is being fine mean? Every time a player isn’t panning out fans say don’t worry they’ll be fine. Someone posted something by PFF a few weeks ago and Schoonmaker’s blocking didn’t even grade out that well. You’re talking about in a couple of years he may be okay as a receiver? He may not be here a couple of more years. I wouldn’t be surprised if the team tries to trade him at some point after the season or during next season. Even Peyton Hendershot has shown more than him. Plus we have John Stephens who was getting great reviews in training camp until he was injured.

Schoonmaker dropping key passes

He is a Rook TE, totally different from LaPorta, Kincaid, Musgrave, Meyer.
So many willing to hate on Schoon in rookie season have no idea that we Have Fergusson quickly becoming highly relevant, and a rook like Schoon that is just barely getting involved.

Schoonmaker was listed as our biggest training camp disappointment. They pointed out that history has shown that older rookies pass the age of 23 don’t develop much. This is not the first time I’ve heard this.

That "age 23" thing is a good fact to have in the bag for future draftnik-ing.

Schoon was a developmental prospect who never progressed as a receiver in college. And now he's running short on time to develop. That's not something you spend a 2nd round pick on.

So we drafted a project TE who needs a ton of work in the pass game? Yep, sounds like a terrible use of a 2nd round pick.
