Schoonmaker’s rookie season looks like it’s going to be pretty much a wash. This is an injury that’s going to hamper him all season.

Give Schoonmaker surgery to correct the plantar fasciitis for good, put him on IR for 2023, and have him ready for 2024.

Ferguson, Hendershot and McKeon can take care of the fort for 2023.

They reached for a TE in the 2nd because they obviously don’t share your optimism about the current crop of TEs.

From 3 different scouting reports on Schoonmaker:

"Ideal Role: Secondary tight end"

"might need a year or so before he works himself into a full-time TE2 role."

"Potential Role Player/Round 4"

well at least he's old.

Yeah, no duh, but they failed at realizing an existing major problem with his feet: plantar fasciitis. You can't do squat if you can't run on your feet.

Oh but their scouting department, amongst everything else is supposed to be so great here.

This injury does not necessarily mean surgery is necessary. Most of the time, rest is all that is needed. They probably already had him resting and his schedule is not yet complete. My guess is he will be ready somewhere in the middle of camp.

Dallas let Schultz walk knowing this was considered a "deep" draft for TE's.

They choose to create a need at TE for financial reasons. (Dallas wanted to keep Schultz, but not at his price)

The tight ends in the draft went faster than Dallas imagined. Schoonmaker was not the TE they wanted.

To be fair, they likely felt taking Schoonmaker in the 2nd round was worth the risk...whether he plays this season or next year. Schoonmaker's talents are very high for a TE. Plus, the Cowboys could afford to gamble with Ferguson, Hendershot and McKeon already on the team.
