Dallas let Schultz walk knowing this was considered a "deep" draft for TE's.

They choose to create a need at TE for financial reasons. (Dallas wanted to keep Schultz, but not at his price)

The tight ends in the draft went faster than Dallas imagined. Schoonmaker was not the TE they wanted.
Dallas didn’t let Schultz walk. They offered him a good contract that he refused.

Only one tight end went before they picked and that was Kinkaid....

Semantics.

You are correct that Dallas offered him a contract. Dallas "Let" him walk in the sense that Dallas chose not to pay enough to keep him. Dallas could have retained him, but decided not to. It was up to Dallas- hence they "let him walk".

More importantly, the narrative that Dallas let Schultz leave so they could upgrade the position is incorrect. It was a financial decision.

The following TE's were all off the board when Dallas took Schoonmaker:

Kincaid
LaPorta
Mayer
Musgrave
This makes no sense. If THey could'e got ANY tight end they wanted except Kincaid....but you suggest they didn't want Kincaid or Schoonmaker...which tight end do you think they wanted?

I knew that foot problem with the Schoonster was not gonna go away silently. I predict here and now it will be an ongoing problem all season. thanks Jerry. Another 2nd round blunder.
Its plantar facitis....it doesn't just go away during the season he will more than likely have it all season. People have played with it. Including some Cowboys over the years.

Dallas was never taking a TE in round 1.

Notice the way the second round unfolded. 3 of the first 11 picks in the second round were TE's. That was the run on TE's. After that, it took 16 more picks before the next one was taken. That tells you what you need to know. NO WAY Dallas enters the second round hoping that Schoonmaker would still be there.

Great, so he sits out 3 years then wants a second contract. They didn’t even need another TE.

It's July 25 of this kid's rookie training camp and already he's toast on this forum.

Tough crowd. Has a sore foot and the team is playing it safe.

Could have waited for a healthy Darnel Washington, late in the third with the 30 slot like Pit did.
6'7" 264lbs, 21 yrs old.
At least would have been a nice blocking early option, younger, less draft investment.
We drafted Schoon to do both early, but a bum foot derails that notion.
Hindsight is always 20/20, but just seems so odd that we have the 2nd round curse, or they just like burning those 2nds like free chips on a poker table.

Washington had a red flag on him to with his injury.

You think a 1-legged rookie is an upgrade over a proven consensus top 10 tight end?
I don't.
You have to think longer than today. There is a reason Schultz didn't get a big offer. There is a reason Schoon was drafted.

So YES is my answer. Remember why those two things happened. Especially Schoon getting drafted.

Planter fasciitis is no sore foot that recovers in short time.
PF is a condition that lingers as far as pain, can be played on, but requires pain management and takes a long time to heal, sometimes it never does.
I have had it for over 10 years now, and Im highly active and just trudge through the pain, like biting a bullet sometimes but that has nothing to do with
the stress that an NFL TE puts on those tendons/tendon constantly.
I hope Schoon makes a miraculous recovery, but this new is never good news on any rook, but he was drafted to play a strong role in Qs scheme, but dont see it happening.
Red Shirt more than likely for Schoon in 2023 looks like.
I tried to support this pick, but this is not what Q envisioned, and not a good way for Schoon to introduce himself.
