Schottenheimer fired in SD

I just saw this. Unreal turn of events. How lucky did we just get?

Why do you say that? Do you think that JJ will go after him for some position here? And if so, what?

Marty was a lame duck anyway after turning down a one year extension, so AJ Smith just decided to part ways essentially....

maybe they will go after that guy from the colts that we interviewed....his name escapes me at the moment

I think Hos was talking about the fact that we stole Wade from San Diego before this happened.

The move comes nearly four weeks after it was announced that Schottenheimer would be back for 2007.

... the process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager.

Although G.M. A.J. Smith has not yet been fired, keep in mind that the bulk of a front office's work is done in the days leading up to free agency and the draft. Come early May, we've got a feeling that Smith will be sent packing, too.

This is just too weird. They go 14-2 and there's talk of firing the HC. Then it's said he's coming back but turned down an extension making him a lame duck coach.
Now after losing their two coordinators, who would've probably been the top two choices to replace Marty if he had been fired right after the season, they now fire him.

Also, isn't AJ Smith supposed to be some kind of big shot personnel man? He sounds like a jerk, but what's the deal with wanting to fire him too?

I think Wade would be the Chargers HC if they had fired Marty before now, and our defense wouldn't be this excited for a change.

My bet will be Ron Rivera.

Dean Spanos a meddling idiot?

Probably mean us getting Wade before Marty got fired. Otherwise he's been their top choice to take over in SD.

Jim Caldwell from the Colts would be a nice choice because he could work with their QB Philip Rivers...

wonder if the Chargers will change their mind about us interviewing and possibly hiring any of their assistants now

Ahhh...gotcha.

That would not surprise me at all.

I know the mangement did not like Shotty, but to fire him after a 14-2 season? Amazing!

Who ever gets this team is getting a solid team though. I bet they go with a coach who focuses on offense . . . either Norv or Caldwell.
Rivera will want to change the D to 4-3 and that defense is too stout right now to make windfall changes.

I would like to know the answer to that too.

I think it might be Norv because Cameron's offensive systems is similar (Norv's had Cameron as QB coach in Washington) but the Pete Carroll thing makes sense if the Spanos' fire AJ Smith too...Carroll would get to stay in Souther Cal and have total control of the ship...and with things possibly turning ugly at USC, Carroll might want to bolt

David

This is stunning. I can understand firing him, his conservative approach has always cost his team playoff wins, but that's a firing that needs to be done at the conclusion of the season. Now they're a team in turmoil.

For this to happen right now, you have to assume that something happened. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Everytime I hear Caldwell I think of his lackluster performance as HC at Wake Forest. Of course, up until the last year or two, no one had success there. But, it is possible since they are decent now.

They'd have to be real desperate to go after Norv. I dont' see SD going after a Raiders reject.

Yeah, I thought of that too. I won't say you are wrong. That could happen.

Imagine Super Bowl XLII...Cowboys vs. Chargers. Norv vs. Wade.

This place would explode.
