I don't think the CZ bandwidth could take that much traffic. We'd also lose good posters to suicide since they might not be able to check the board for an hour or so.

14-2 and you get the boot.
Jimmy Johnson won back-to-back Superbowls and got canned. It's an ego thing, I guess, though I have to say that with Schottenheimer, you need to look at his playoff record and not his regular season record.

Chargers fire Marty Schottenheimer
BERNIE WILSON
Associated Press

SAN DIEGO - Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer was fired Monday night in a shocking move by team president Dean Spanos, who cited a "dysfunctional situation" between the coach and general manager A.J. Smith.

Less than a month after San Diego's NFL-best 14-2 season was wrecked in a playoff loss to New England, Spanos cited the exodus of both coordinators and other assistants in firing Schottenheimer, who had a year left on his contact.

"The process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager," Spanos said in a statement. "In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation."

The firing was first reported by ESPN.

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was hired as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, following offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and two other assistants out of town for better jobs.

Although Schottenheimer said last week that change was inevitable, Smith sounded concerned, saying, "Both in the same year - Wow."

Tight ends coach Rob Chudzinski became Cleveland's offensive coordinator, and linebackers coach Greg Manusky was hired as San Francisco's defensive coordinator.

Running backs coach Clarence Shelmon, who's never been a coordinator, was promoted to replace Cameron. Shelmon accepted only a one-year contract due to Schottenheimer's lame-duck status. Schottenheimer declined the team's offer of a $4.5 million, one-year extension through 2008, which came with a club-option $1 million buyout.

Schottenheimer has been at odds with Smith since the 2005 season, apparently over personnel decisions by the GM.

Sounds like Shotty and Smith butted heads about filling out the vacant coaching positions and it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Ted Cottrell, come on down.

Marty would be a hell of a college coach. There is no playoffs in collage ball.

The Chargers have lost a off. coordinator, def. coordinator and now a head coach.
We need to get our staff filled now while there are some good coaches available.

A couple things here ladies and gents:

Firstly, I'd think it's at least a possibility that our man Tony Sparano gets an interview with the Chargers for their head job. As reported in this article, the Cowboys had denied the Chargers permission to interview him, which I would suppose was for their OC job.

Here's the article, relevant part extracted below: http://cowboyszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81284

"While offensive assistants David Lee, Haley, Chris Palmer, Anthony Lynn and Freddie Kitchens were allowed to leave or not retained, teams like San Diego and Cleveland were denied permission to speak with Sparano – who interviewed for the Cowboys' head coaching job – about coordinator gigs. Sean Payton wanted to bring him to New Orleans last year, but Parcells blocked the move."

With the field of head coaching candidates seriously thin, I can easily see them at least bringing him in for an interview since they were previously interested in having them as coordinator. THAT WOULD SUCK FOR US, I really think Sparano played a big role in the success the offense had last year and was looking forward to seeing what he'd do without Bill's shadow looming.

Secondly, and in jest, this was a comment from a Chargers fan on their board in the "Schottenheimer fired!!!" thread:

From poster Tycebrew:

Unreal. So much for that 1 year contract. Please dont get Parcells.

:laugh2:

I'm going to say it will be an offensive coach and they bring in -- damn what is his name -- the old d-coord who Wade had been reported to be talking to - to run the D.

Ted Cottrell?

Thin? There are tons of college guys licking their chops right now. And you know the outside guys on our list (save for Norv) have all received calls.

Folks shouldn't discount the appeal of San Diego -- not my thing but it is paradise to many.

"The front-office tension built over the past few weeks, sources said, as Smith and Spanos disagreed with Schottenheimer's decision to allow linebackers coach Greg Manusky, tight ends coach Rob Chudzinski and assistant strength and conditioning coach Matt Schiotz to interview elsewhere. All three eventually took other jobs."

"But, according to sources, the final straw occurred yesterday when Schottenheimer wanted to interview his brother Kurt for the defensive coordinator position. Spanos and Smith did not approve, but Schottenheimer held firm in asserting that he had the right to hire his own staff."

What was Marty supposed to do? He knew there was a very strong possibility that he would get fired at the end of next season. He also knew that if he did, he would have options available (either another coaching gig or a return to a studio analyst's role).

His assistants didn't have any such fallback plan. It would have been pure selfishness to force them to remain in San Diego under those circumstances. I applaud Marty for taking the high road on this one.
