Schottenheimer: We shot ourselves in the foot with too many 3rd and longs

Night and day when playing without 4 pro bowlers than with them.
No question this team can't fully operate without the originally planned for offensive line. Now, there is a window of four more weeks prior to the casts and walking canes are taken out of the status of the team.

On the defensive side, if the secondary is not top shelf, then the defensive line can be out physicaled upon being confronted strongly.

Forcing an 'unnatural' toughness upon the defensive side of ball will then increase injuries on that side as well.

As is, recovery could take 6 weeks and by then, it is feasible they will be out of the picture and a question to still be able to reach the playoffs.

The coaches better walk on water from here and the players fully respond. That or all determined teams will be just too tough.

Of the last 4 times inside the redzone opportunities here were the 4 results first down:

1. First and goal from the 10: Pollard up the middle for 3 yards

2. first and goal from the 10: Dowdle up the middle for 2

3. First and goal from the 10: Pollard up the middle for 2

4. first and goal from the 5: Chuma completely whiffs on his blocking assignment, defender runs free Pollard two yard loss on the tackle

So in all 4 instances we ran the ball and did little to nothing leaving 2nd and long. And if you notice the first 3 times it was first and 10 from the 10.

It should be noted that especially down by the GL the Cards defense did an incredible job covering everyone. There were also two instances of PI in the endzone, the gallup mauling being the worst and no call.

Dak was also rushed and chased out of the pocket on other downs down there. The Oline did an admirable job run blocking during this game, but when we got down to the redzone they couldnt open holes.

Not sure I liked some of the play calling down there and going for it on 4th and 5 was a dumb call. Kick the FG and make it 19-21.
Like I said in another thread.

The question from here then is, how close can this coaching staff push their players back to being able to score. Now there is a team hole affecting the offensive line efficiency.

Obvious, can this team now score in the Red Zone, a now continued problem ... from twice 12 win seasons against a strongly playing team. Planned for or not.

Not having to cover many points needed will improve efficiency of this defense. The receiving group has supposedly been improved.

Just another scapegoat for Dak? JJ and Co. will never buy in but if this team is close to .500 at the halfway point in the season, give Trey a shot and see what he’s got. That’s the only we’ll know if we need to go all in on a QB heavy draft next year. If this doesn’t happen, it’s just insanity. Of course that’s been JJs MO since Jimmy left.

eh Tyler Smith played well at LT last year. Not sure why they didn't kick him out there, at least in 2nd half. There was one play where Chuma had to ask Tyler who to block. Chuma played well as backup guard leave him there as back up and start Richards. or move Tyler over and let him start there.
He played well for a rookie. He wasn't a very good pass blocker at LT.

I'm surprised at the choice to go with Edoga at LT though.

This is the absolute worst idea lmao.

If you're 2-8, fine, but you don't do that if you have a shot at the playoffs.

Play calling. Killed the Cowboys yesterday. Put the defense in a bad spot.
It’s never play calling alone , execution plays an important part too, of course bonehead play calling can hurt like in the last years SF game , throwing on 2nd and 2 in red zone .

Cowboys OC Brian Schottenheimer: “We just kinda shot ourselves in the foot (in the red zone). Too many third-and-longs. A big emphasis for us is going to be getting ahead of the sticks in the red zone. It starts with me. Have to coach better. We should’ve been able to punch a couple of those touchdowns in.”

I don't buy a word of this because MM said the same BS. No s*** the offensive production is tied to the coordinator!!!

They all believe that because Tyron, Zack and Tyler were out...we're good. No need to dig too deep (in their minds)...we lost because we didn't have our lineman.

Since he was a rookie, yes he played well for a rookie. I just don't understand the need for the caveat there though.

The point of the caveat is that it's not like he was so good at LT that he's necessarily your best option there if Tyron is out, especially if it creates a gap at LG.

A popular spot indeed.

I think this game was instructive in how Micah Parsons’s strengths can be used against him. Especially early, the Cardinals were able to manipulate him via zone read, or simply allow him to crash the edges and set the run game outside of the vacant spaces he created. While I wouldn’t call it a blueprint, this was the kind of harmless wake-up call Dallas needed early in the season. Their upcoming slate is brutal, and contains little to no Zach Wilson.

The Cowboys will have no choice but to alter their hand signals for this weekend's showdown with the Patriots. Speaking to the media Tuesday morning, Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer mentioned how Will Grier could give the Patriots an advantage if they keep their hand signals the same.

Grier was on the Cowboys from September of 2021 to August of 2023. In his final preseason game with "America's Team," he racked up 305 passing yards and four total touchdowns. Shortly after joining the Bengals practice squad on Aug. 30, Grier was signed to the Patriots' 53-man roster.

Schottenheimer won't allow Grier to steal signs from New England's bench this Sunday. "We know Will knows where a lot of the bones are buried," Schottenheimer said. "We know Zeke does as well … I’m sure (Grier) is definitely being interrogated."

Zack Martin, Tyler Biadasz and Tyron Smith were all sidelined and Chuma Edoga was moved to LT. That meant only one lineman, Terence Steele, remained in the same role as the week before.

The Cowboys are used to injuries on their line and the adjustments that go with it, but that degree of churn in a single week is almost unprecedented. It’s possible the simplistic gameplan McCarthy built is at least partially because he wanted to keep things easy for his replacements.

That's a big deal with probably the 3 most important lineman out. It's just a different offense after that.
