Scout’s Eye: Melton Impressive, Peterson Gets Best of Bryant Among Thoughts

  • It doesn’t bother me one bit that I thought that Brandon Weeden would have played well in this game, and I was not afraid to say it. It was my belief that he would play within himself and not try to do too much. When I had a chance to visit with him last week that was exactly the message that I heard. He was excited to get the opportunity to play with these offensive weapons, and he was going to make sure that they were the stars against Arizona. Weeden was prepared to play against the Cardinals, and from the players to the front office guys, they were all confident in the game plan and his ability to execute it. What bothered me the most was not trying to get the ball to Dez Bryant, but the missed opportunities to get the ball in the hands of guys like Cole Beasley and Jason Witten, who found ways to get open. I felt like he left some simple throws on the field while forcing others.

  • Even in a losing effort, these Cowboys defensive coaches have to be impressed with the type of effort and play they are getting from Henry Meltonon the defensive line. Melton is finally looking healthy and we are starting see more of those explosive plays from 2012 when he was with the Bears, before his knee injury. This defensive line rotation has allowed him to remain fresh throughout the game, so when he is on the field as that under-tackle or at end, he is giving them his best. I am looking forward to when they put him on the same side of the field with DeMarcus Lawrence and attack offensive blocking schemes that way.

  • When I make this observation it is with the understanding of the quarterback situation in this game against the Cardinals – but I felt like that Dez Bryanthandled the matchup with Seattle’s Richard Sherman better than he did against Arizona’s Patrick Peterson. Both are outstanding corners and can be difficult to deal with, but it was clear that once Peterson knew that he could get away with grabbing Bryant and putting his hands in his face that he was going to continue to do it, and that got the best of Bryant. Even on those balls from Weeden that were poorly thrown, Bryant wasn’t in great position with his body to be on the receiving end. I also noticed that Bryant was fighting the ball. He wasn’t as clean as he normally is with those snatch catches.

Something to keep an eye on as this season goes forward is that offensive coordinators are finding ways to get Barry Church in more one-on-one coverage on the outside in space. Last week it was Jordan Reed for a first down and today it was Andre Ellington for one as well. I have always felt like Church was better in coverage when he could see the ball in front of him and drive on it. It’s never easy for safeties to have to cover in space, but at times it’s necessary due to all these multiple receiver sets.

This is the most interesting observation IMO.

This reminds me of the good old days when there would be monster threads defending Williams with the idea that "you just don't know the coverages".

Expect more of the same.

Rivaled only by RW WR is a great down field blocker.

I really think our inferior coaching is rearing its ugly red head. Teams are studying us and finding the holes. What adjustments are we making? None

I'm sure Dez would have made a better showing if he didn't have a worthless nitwit throwing bricks at him all day.

Peterson got physical with him. Almost every throw, Dez was looking for a flag, instead of getting physical with peterson. And the funny thing is, he changed agents thinking he is going to get a monster contract.

There was a time at the end of the 2nd Weeden only had 9 yards outside Dunbars screen. Weeden didn't hit Williams or Dez until the last drive of the game. You don't think that Weeden anything to do with it? If Romo played we win that game. I didn't walk away from that game thinking ARZ shut Dallas down, they had a hard time closing out the game without Weedens help.

Candidly, the Cowboys simply got exposed as an overly hyped team that couldn't live up to what was being advertised by the media. They played a team that came to their place and dominated them, taking full advantage of a backup QB that simply doesn't have what it takes to compete under considerable pressure.
Hopefully, the walking wounded will return and things might return to normal once again.
Overall, the team effort fell short of what they're capable of with a full contingent.
Take a few key guys out of our offensive lineup and we saw what we get.

I disagree. This game was all about the quarterback. Cowboys got exposed as a team with a poor backup quarterback. That is all.

This applies to most teams when one of the few injured is the QB and the replacement sucks to high heaven. Weeden missed too many wide open receivers to feel like Arizona dominated. They were lucky Weeden was in the game. They got the win. Good for them. But I place the blame on Weeden's total ineptness among other things.

The part about Dez is ridiculous. He admits that Peterson was ALLOWED to interfere all day and Weeden threw uncatchable passes, but that is somehow Dez's fault. I don't know what else Dez could've done in this one.

Sounds to me like you're in denial of the fact that it takes more than one man to lose a game. Granted, Weeden played very poorly but there were folks on the OL that did as well. It didn't help that two of them were out. Dez had a bad game and it's not the first time that has happened against Patrick Peterson. Our safeties didn't fare especially well in pass pro, either. It's never on one man, as poorly as that one man might have responded.

DISAGREE. Our backup QB was the reason why we lost. Its not that we were exposed. If we had Romo this would have been a game and possibly very winnable. If the refs did their jobs and called PI on Peterson it would also help. Those holding plays were obvious and stupid refs again want to make it hard for us to win.

I don't we're disagreeing much. I do agree with you that others played poorly and that injuries have us at less than full strength. However, I believe that with Romo (or even Orton if he was still here) at quarterback this game would have been much different. Weeden was the reason we only scored 3 points offensively.
