No more shocking than McFadden, Hanna, Nzeocha, Romo, or the other 10 guys.

I swear, in the 80s training camp was two-a-days with full contact, and guys rarely got hurt. Now, they barely touch each other in camp and guys drop like flies.
Understand something. Today's athletes are cyborgs. They are literally human missiles. The size, strength, and speed of todays athletes is incomparable to the 80s...and it is only getting better. Heck I remember hearing ex players talk about smoking cigarettes and drinking beer in the lockerooms after games and practices. I remember hearing players from the 80s talking about selling Encyclopedias or vacuum cleaners door to door in the offseason....and using training camp to get in shape! Those guys would get absolutely ran by, ran over and ran through by today's athlete's

Did you see "A football life" on Jimmy Johnson? Did you see the outdoor weight room and what constituted as exercise when he saw the Dallas Cowboys players and practice field the first time. It was a JOKE. And our beloved Randy White came to him after a few days and told him "good luck, I'm done"

Let's examine the RB position for context. The days of a bell cow RB like Emmit for 12+ are in the rear view mirror forever. Was Emmit a special player? Of course. But he would not duplicate what he did in the 90s in today's NFL.

I hate that Sean Lee is hurt. He is a great player today. But he would have been a HOFer had he played in the 80s and 90s. Why? His physical stature was more suited to play back then. In today's NFL...he is great in spurts...but his body is not built to play 16 games for 10 years in today's NFL. But it is what it is.

Maybe that shows that more injuries occur from non-contact than from contact. The ones that happen because of contact stand out because we can see what happened, but regular "impact" exercise also puts a lot of strain on joints, muscles and ligaments.

Take, for example, the number of runners we hear about struggling through leg injuries. Normal physical exercise is good for us but what most athletes do goes beyond normal physical exercise.

Yeah im still trying to figure out what the difference was back then....
My armchair theories:

More padding and larger padding back then

Difference between farmer strength and body builder strength

Too much stress on tendons and ligaments....players too big

Barry Church, Dez Bryant, Orlando Scandrick, Mo Claiborne, Terrell McClain, Demarcus Lawrence....and remember Miles Austin, Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins, Jay Ratliff, Kyle Kosier, 100 centers and safeties....?

The guys you can't count on for years are Jason Witten and Brandon Carr.

None have missed as many games as Lee who's missed 36 games due to injury. He missed an entire season after suffering an ACL in the teams first OTA practice a couple of years ago. I can't recall a player in the history of the franchise who's missed more games due to injury than him. If he wasn't such a good player the Cowboys would have moved on from him several years ago.

Usually when Lee plays hurt he is not as effective. His injuries really are annoying, I think Lee needs to retire

How is Adrian Peterson doing it? Eli Manning? Jason Witten? How many games did Farve play without missing?

You named 1...1....RB. How many RBs have come and gone since Emmit played without nearly the longevity? QBs, are protected now more than at any other time in the history of the NFL.....so they SHOULD have longevity. You named Witten...who is the exception to the rule.

We will agree to disagree...because there is no way those guys in the 80s would have the longevity they had back then if they were playing today. The collisions today are simply put...more violent. Heck when Jim Brown was playing...he was bigger than everybody trying to tackle him. When Wilt Chamberlin was dominating the NBA...there were only 4 guys taller than 6'8" in the NBA. Now on a 15 man NBA roster...half the roster is 6'8" or taller. Today's athletes are nothing short of phenomenal
