Health is a big part and if offense stays relatively healthy as I said I think this offense can be championship caliber however games are not going to be won on offense alone. As for the 2014 they did a good job but when you go into GB can you stop them? 2014 defense could not and that was with a gimpy Rodgers. I'm not giving up on defense but I have got to see more out of them, they have to get turnovers but they have got to stand up and make critical stops especially late in games when the pressure is on.
Many reasons we can say needs to happen but you said most important. The most important thing that has to happen is to stay healthy. Defense, offense and special teams needs to produce....especially defense like you said but health is by far most important

I think if Tapper pans out this defense will take a big step forward. It's driving me crazy that he's missing camp and hasn't played any preseason.

I'm only giving my view and I think if healthy this offense will be very good, championship caliber! so outside of major injuries on offense I fill very good about their chances. Defense even without injury if they stay 100% healthy they are still a question mark. When Lawrence and Gregory are back they are still a question mark, we say they are good yes best we have yet neither guy is really proven outside of a play here or there but nothing consistent nothing that is going to strike fear into opposing offense. It is on the only part of this team that bothers me. I think this team can make the post season as is, but once you get there well there is not going to be any easy games and offense alone is not going to carry the day. Defense is a must they have to stand up and be accountable.

In my opinion this entire season will come down to defense. I think this offense can play up to a championship level but the problem I see it on defense even when we get guys like Lawrence back and Gregory this defense will still be a major question mark. There is potential in both players but both are still question marks in my mind as being major difference makers.
I think this team can win the NFC East but to advance this defense will have to play to a level that I am unsure they are capable of playing to

100% correct. THAT has been the entire point this off season that some of these cats dont want to hear. All they want to do is talk about our wonderful offense and pawn the defense of as "they will be fine" and "the 2014 defense was worse on paper" yada yada yada.

The offense is a given. We already know its going to be great save Romo health. So what is the point of talking about it? That part of the equation is already understood and all set. What THIS season is going to be about is the defense. How far and how good that defense can be will determine the quality of the season that we will have.

Based on what exactly? The guy cant even get on the field and he is a rookie. His entire rookie season is all but washed up. Its not like rookie Dlineman make big impacts anyway. And certainly not 4th rounders.

Playoffs will come down to defense.

Getting off the field on 3rd down in Lambeau will determine the season.

IF we do get to the Superbowl then not letting Brady chip away at our defense all day will be key.

Avoiding Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers is key for us because we have nothing for them.

Anyone else i'm not too worried about.

Seattle, Carolina, Arizona.

These are 3 great, complete teams in the NFC with both a great offense and a great defense. And most likely we will be going on the road in if we make the playoffs. Then there is GB and Aaron Rogers.

This is the problem. How do you beat those top 3 complete teams when our D wont be able to stop any of them?

If the offense is healthy and running like it should, that will immensely help the defense.

Teams won't be content to run the ball and play safe like last year. The Cowboys were an easy 24-13 victory for other teams because they know the Cowboys weren't a threat to score. Punts were no big deal for oppoents. Turnovers dried up for Dallas' defense, and they wilted under the number of snaps.

Now, the Cowboys are going to average 30 a game, so teams have to cut loose. A punt might be close to a turnover against Dallas.

And the run game will grind the clock to nothing, just like in 2014.

I think this team is better than 2014, in fact. Better offensive line, better backs, better home run potential, better secondary, better QB group. If Marinelli can get the front 7 to play average, it's a more complete team.

bla bla bla. More homer rhetoric while turning a blind eye to the most glaring holes on the team.

I'm not sure the Giants, Commanders, or Eagles will be any good on defense. If we keep the ball out of the other teams hands like a couple years ago our defense will be a lot fresher. I don't see Giants really running it much, Commanders ran the ball poorly last year. Eagles are lower on talent.

I think the defense has improved. I do agree with you that our defense is the weakness on the team and they have to step up and play good.....I just don't think it's as bad as some make it out to be

Last years defense wasn't really that bad considering the offensive issues without Romo and Dez. It was pretty much average all year.

Please share with us the teams in the NFL that don't have holes. Like, both of them.

Yes I am worried about defense because last season when teams needed to move the ball down the field they did so pretty easily. I think there are teams where our defense will be good enough and some teams that unless defense plays to a higher expectation they will get ran over. Again I think they can win the east the concern is once you get into the post season there will be some good teams waiting and offense is not going to win alone.
It is easier to play defense with a lead and if the offense has a great running game.

Depth is my biggest concern. If everybody is healthy then the defense should be at least average.

I didn't say this year, though that still remains a possibility. I'm sure Charles Haley would like to hear your thoughts on rookie 4th round DL, lol

HOF Charles Haley? So I guess then every 4th round DL will become a hall of famer?

And did Haley go nuts his first year after missing the entire preseason with a broken foot?

Not for the Cowboys....they have an innate ability to give up big leads in the 4th quarter, no matter what game it is, preseason, regular season or post season. Its not a matter of will it happen, it will happen. The biggest myth perpetuated by the Cowboys and repeated on message boards is that Marrinelli is a miracle worker who can take cart pushers at Wal Mart and make them into NFL linemen. Marrinelli hasn't had a great defense without legitimate NFL caliber players, and at least one super star player. This is no different than Jerry saying we don't need a good OL because Romo can escape the rush and make the OL look better.

It may be easier to an extent but top teams if you don't put a pass rush out there you will not have a lead for long. Dallas has had big leads and blew it. I hope the defense plays good ball but it is a concern people acting as if well defense is no big deal offense will carry the entire load? BS you have to play defense in this league. We got nothing in terms of pass rushers and the big QB will eat this defense up unless we find a way to generate a rush. Unfortunately our best pass rushers are idiots who would rather get high than play the game but even if they were here they are pretty much unproven.
I am considered one of the biggest homers on this board and I am not blind to the fact that Rod has his work cut out for him and for this team to have any chance of reaching a championship will require good play out of this defense. I’m not giving up on this season or this team but I will not sit here and lie to myself and think everything it great when I know it isn’t

Cornerbacks should be OK. Safety should be OK as long as Jones is the real deal and Wilcox doesn't have to play much. DTs are the strength of the team at this point. LBs aren't very deep. DE is one giant question mark at this point.
DEs aren't a question mark, they plain suck. Should have signed a vet free agent or two. Our D would have been much better.
