I hate to hear this. I really want to play them at full strength so there's no excuses when we win.

And this guy has been bothered with back problems for a while.

Back problems just don't go away-- Ask Charles Haley or Darren Woodson or Aikman or even Don Mattingly.

Andrews could be done.

Reid talks about putting Andrews on IR

September 15, 2009 10:26 AM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

Eagles coach Andy Reid provided Eagles in-house reporter Dave Spadaro with a quote regarding his decision to put Shawn Andrews (back) on injured reserve:

"It's disappointing to lose any player for the entire season, but we have full confidence in the other linemen we have on this roster to help this team succeed," Reid said in a statement. "We wish Shawn all the best as he recovers and rehabilitates from this injury."

As we wrote last week, I'm not sure why the Eagles trusted Andrews in the first place. I think there's a lack of trust on both sides. Andrews thought his injury was worse than what the Eagles were letting on. The Eagles thought Andrews could've played through the pain. Justice has filled in admirably for Andrews, but what will happen the first time he bumps into Osi Umenyiora again. Pass-rushers in the Beast will be licking their chops.

Here's what I wrote when Andrews missed practice last Thursday: "This is a guy who acknowledged dealing with depression heading into the '08 season and then missed 14 games because of a back injury. I thought the Eagles did an admirable job of trying to help Andrews work through his issues, but now they're coming across as pretty naive. Reid and president Joe Banner were so hopeful about Andrews' comeback that they didn't bother to bring in an adequate backup. And despite what you may have read during training camp, Winston Justice is not an adequate replacement. He basically launched Osi Umenyiora's Pro Bowl campaign in 2007 and he's never really recovered from that dreadful performance -- at least in my opinion."

I've seen a couple people comment that perhaps Justice's performance against the Panthers on Sunday caused him to forget what happened against Umenyiora. I think the only thing that will help Justice get over that mental hurdle is to have some success against Umenyiora -- and he'll likely get his chance.

they moved Shawn Andrews from OG to RT? or is it his brother Stacey Andrews?

They moved Shawn to RT and Stacey to guard.

It's a loss for them, certainly, but remember that he only played 2 games last year, so they're used to being without him.

Man, this guy has a lot of talent, you just don't get to see it very often.

I wouldn't mind getting rid of him, if we can get something back for him. Which is going to be hard, since he has so many problems.

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Shawn Andrews(notes) won’t play with his brother and college roommate this year.

The Philadelphia Eagles placed Andrews on injured reserve Tuesday, ending the two-time Pro Bowl lineman’s season. Andrews missed the entire preseason and season opener with a back injury. He briefly returned to practice, but his surgically repaired back flared up again.

“It’s disappointing to lose any player for the entire season, but we have full confidence in the other lineman we have on this roster to help this team succeed,” coach Andy Reid said. “We wish Shawn all the best as he recovers and rehabilitates from this injury.”

Quarterback Jeff Garcia(notes) took Andrews’ spot on the roster. Garcia was signed to provide insurance because Donovan McNabb(notes) has a cracked rib and is uncertain to play this week.

Philadelphia revamped its offensive line in the offseason, replacing longtime bookend tackles Tra Thomas(notes) and Jon Runyan(notes). The Eagles signed Andrews’ brother, Stacy Andrews(notes), and acquired his college roommate, Jason Peters(notes). They were counting on Andrews moving from right guard to anchor the right tackle spot.

Winston Justice(notes) replaced him in the starting lineup. Runyan remains unsigned and worked out with the team last week.

The eccentric Andrews missed all of training camp in 2008 with depression. He returned for the season opener, but went down in Week 2 with a herniated disc.

Andrews practiced early last week in preparation for Philadelphia’s game against Carolina. He called himself a “beast” and seemed excited about trying to block Julius Peppers(notes). But Andrews tweaked his back Wednesday, sat out the next two days and couldn’t play.

Critics have questioned Andrews’ passion for football and wondered whether he’s more interested in a music career. Andrews, who sports a faux-hawk haircut that’s sometimes blonde or orange or red, loves to sing. He has posted various YouTube videos where he talks about his latest musical compositions. Andrews wrote a song, “Gettin’ My Michael Phelps On,” which he dedicated to the Olympic champion.

“I’ve had a longer passion for music, ever since third grade,” Andrews said last month. “Football came along, and that’s still a passion, as well. I love football. Football is my job, what I do to take care of my family. At the same time, I can’t do this forever, so why not do the music thing as well? Football is No. 1 right now.”
