Shawn Merriman *Several Merged Threads*

I agree. You don't see Merriman covering TEs and other stuff, but you see a relentless pass rusher.

Ware is very athletic, but he's too nice and he doesn't play with a ferocity like Merriman.

Merriman is just a mean, nasty football player.

Luis Castillo looks pretty good too.

I have been watching him play since the 9th grade, he is unreal. I am telling you he is an out right beast. No one can match his intensity!!!!

Two words: Robert Gallery.

Beating Robery Gallery inspired this post. Hilarious. Gallery is going to make many players look like beasts this season.

Are you guys even watching this game? Oakland may have the worst O-line and Brooks just holds the ball forever. Even our D could have a field day against this offense.

Ware/Merriman is a toss up. both are great players. Merrimen obviously brings a nasty attitude to the equation. Ware brings more dicipline and slightly more versatility.

I am quite happy with Ware.

I'll take both of them but we use Ware in coverage alot and they don't. Opportunty is the name of the game both of them are studs

Watching Rogers get burned for a touchdown, and watching Merriman dominate the Raiders like he is, I feel sick. I love Rogers, but he defintiely got burned tonight. :(

versatility? how do you pick ware over merriman in that department

If anything, he should be ashamed he only has two sacks against Gallery.

we should have drafted him. **** parcells!!!!!!

We should have drafted him. I love Rogers, but Merriman is an absolute beast. And watching Carter be largely ineffective in this game (besides a non-call on a hold) it makes me want Merriman even more. :( ESPECIALLY because he's a local kid.

Well, Gallery was the number 2 pick overall in the 04 draft....must have at least a little talent.

Your post comes off as half jest/half serious, but I do think you're right.

That's why above I said you never know how he'd have looked in our scheme. A lot of people mentioned how he's constantly rushing the passer. Ware's not afforded that luxury, and I doubt Merriman would here, either.

You are right on. I do like both players. They are both special players, but like you said Merriman rushes on nearly every play.

yeah. Like Mike Williams. 4th overall.

I guess this earth shattering thought deserved a new post instead of a post on the other Merriman fluff pieces.

They had pretty even stats last season... you're acting like 1 game made all the difference.

Also... information like this helps the Ware side of the argument:

I think people are putting far too much stock in the fact that Merriman had 10 sacks to Ware's eight. (If Ware had 10 and Merriman eight, would people still think Merriman had a better season?) If you go back and look at each sack for Ware and Merriman, Ware had far more sacks of his own doing, while Merriman had far more coverage/cleanup sacks.

I went back and looked at some video of both players, and Merriman seemed to benefit from his teammates' pass rush on quite a few of his sacks. The quarterback would feel pressure in the pocket and try to scramble out. And Merriman, who was unable to get around his blocker but got fairly close to the quarterback, would grab him or run him down for a sack. In Ware's case, I saw a number of plays when he also pushed his blocker close to the quarterback, just as Merriman did, but nobody else was even close. So the quarterback could just slide in the pocket and throw the ball.

From what I saw on video, and from the stats each player put up against the run (Ware had twice as many tackles for loss and more tackles for no gain), I'm convinced that Ware actually created more big plays and had a better season. But because Merriman had two more sacks, the perception remains that he had the better season.
