I don't really care that much one way or another, but the OP was using the story as a jumping off point for the decline of journalistic integrity...

And for the record, I don't like Schefter's smarmy arrogance either. But I always thought he wouldn't have been so definitive if he weren't really sure. These guys aren't hacks like some people out there.
Well, I get that.. and the OP apologized or whatever for questioning his journalistic integrity.

I agree with your take re: Schefter, but the defensiveness mainly comes from Cowboys not confirming his initial report.

He should be defensive when people are attacking his character or his professionalism, the guy was spot on and people should apologize.
I addressed this point earlier in the thread. Still don't think he deserves an apology.

So what if people questions his report.. If you're right, the truth will prevail...and Romo going on IR validates it even if a Jason Garrett PC doesn't.

Well, Schefter was correct. I don't care for the guy that much, but he's doing his job. They should find out who leaked the info in the first place, and fire him/her.

Schefter also broke the news on Romo's extension, citing his agent R.J. Gonser with the number details. That tells you the likely source for his breaking news on the injury this week.

The thing is, Schefter said his source was "100% sure" Romo was out for the season. That was known on Monday. Why cut Spurlock when they could have IR'd Romo on Monday? Apparently, there was a shred of hope for a miracle recovery by the Cowboys. If Harris can't go, that's a big mistake.

Man, I really hope Tony Romo plays!
The fact that Adam Shefter now sounds defensive and irritated when asked about Tomy Romo's status for Sunday versus Philly on SportsCenter makes one think that his reputation and career are on the line.
He is, like many others not named Jay Glazer (i.e. Florio, LaCanfora, Rappaport), more consumed with being the first to report a story rather than being concerned about the validity or verifiability of the facts at hand.
I think this one may blow up in his face.
Gone are the days of ethical journalistic integrity in the NFL Beat Writers and Reporters Society. And Adam Shefter sits at the head of that table.

He was right sadly...

I think it was a little bit of gamesmanship. The Eagles did not know 100% for sure until now the QB was.
Ah, the Patriot way.

Apologies to Mort, Schefter, et al?

Absolutely not.

Schefter made it seem like he was told by somebody in the organization that the Cowboys were putting him out for the rest of the season back when this was first reported.

Instead, the organization did not put him on I-R until today. They tried to see if it could heal and if an epidural shot would work. Furthermore, I think every organization would have tried the same exact thing with their QB if they were in the same situation. Had the epidural worked, then he is not on I-R.

If Schefter had said that 'it is believed that he will go on I-R' then I wouldn't have a problem. But he stated that he was done for the rest of the season per a team source. It was still up in the air.

Or it wasn't up in the air at all and the team was just trying some gamesmanship.

Well, his credibility is on the line. He received a great tip and ran with it. His only flaw is suggesting Romo was out for season. He should've qualified it and just said Romo had the herniated disc and the chance of him playing again this season are slim.

But this is what happens when you speak in absolutes.

I agree with this completely!

Schefter likely got the info from someone inside the organization, or from Romo's agent.

Of course he's going to come off as defensive. Jerry Jones came out almost immediately and said that wasn't true. Jones was contradicting what Schefter knew to be true. Why would Schefter have qualifited his report?

But then anyone who isn't a moron can look at Schefter's track record of being right vs. Jerry Jones' record of being a bald faced liar and it was obvious that Romo was done for the year.

Then Jerry is one of 32 bald face lairs in the NFL. No one is coming out and handing out info, Romo went in got the epidural he would not have needed to do that if they felt he was done for the year he would have just gone in for surgery earlier in the week. Dallas held out hope that the treatment would work. This notion jerry is a liar no more than any other team owner or GM. Get real

Im not saying they couldnt expedite his surgery, but that short of notice?

Romo obviously failed the epidural injection and conservative care. Disc surgery is most commonly due to leg pain/numbness/weakness.
--------------------------

What it means to me is that surgery was always on the table, but they wanted to try the rehab route first.

They would not have given him an epidural shot. I've had epidural shots before, it is one of the worst excruciating pains I've been thru.

He lied. He didn't have a source telling him Romo was thru for the rest of the season. He got caught in that lie and got defensive about it. Same way he got defensive about the Vikings locker room 'schism.'

From my experience, liars tend to continue lying. He fibbed about the Vikings and he is fibbing now.

I feel no need for anybody to apologize. Get it right the first time instead of trying to 'break news' and then there would be no need to discredit one's journalistic integrity.

Still fighting the good homer fight, eh Doomsday? You telling anyone to "get real" is a riot.
Jones was lying and everyone (almost everyone, I guess) knew it. The point of the thread seems to be that Schefter jumped the gun, which he obviously did not. His report was 100% accurate. There was no shot Romo was going to play. And Jones knew it.

But by all mean, keep carrying Jones' water as long as you wish. Year after sub-par year has dampened the blind enthusiasm 100s of fans on here had for Jones. But not you. You'll be right there with Zebra claiming that all we need next year is good luck on the injury front, that we're really as good as the Seahawks and 49ers.

Jerry lies? so do all other fricken onwer and GM, Jerry is no different when it comes to what he puts out in the media. Homer or not has nothing to do with it, it is common sense something you don't appear to have.
As for Romo injury I think those reporting it knew the odds were slim to none that any treatment was going to correct the issue yet Dalla and Romo went through with the treatment to see if it would allow him to play. Once they knew for certain they shut him down. As for lying again if jerry is the bald face liar you claim him to be at least have the decentcy to acknowledge the same can be said for 32 other franchise because no one is standing out there giving full information on their players or draft picks or most any other issue that confronts their teams

Gone are the days of ethical journalistic integrity in the NFL Beat Writers and Reporters Society.

What planet have you been living on. The press over the last thirty years or more have changed from reporting news to writing opinion pieces and dressing it like news. They have found a bully pulpit where their words form opinions of the great unwashed masses, and they now have achieved a status of opinion makers and not the bastion of truth which keeps a society free.

This is not just sports where you find "journalists" post something they heard to be first and have the scoop and find out later it is not true.

MSNBC was caught red handed editing a tape of a 911 call to make the caller appear to be something he wasn't.

Sports is finally catching up.

Schefter was right and knew Romo was out dude, the Cowboys organization were just stalling.

He was right in the end.

I'm not denying it.

I don't think anybody is denying it.

He was just reporting that the organization had ruled him out for the season. They didn't.

And they didn't stall. Epidurals can help with the pain of something like a herniated disc. In fact, they are saying that Dez had a similar problem, took an epidural and he is okay.

Believe me, if you ever hear the words 'you're going to have an epidural' you will want it to be for a GOOD reason.

This is standard procedure in a situation like this where somebody is hoping to avoid surgery.

Schefter was claiming that somebody told him that he was out for the rest of the season. It didn't happen. I would say 'shame on him.' But, you have to have shame in order to be ashamed.
