Should Romo just retire?

This guy is a football player first and foremost. He will play through as much pain as a player can possibly play though (see the Washington game). He is not going to retire. Spare me the throwing the ball around with your kid garbage. The guy is an athlete who can throw a football 65 yards, he will be able to throw a baseball 30 feet with his kids and even his grandkids. People on here say they have had back surgeries and while I sympathize with those people (my father had major back and neck surgery) we tend to forget that Tony gets the best of the best as far as a surgery, therapy and any other medical attention.

Don't turn your back on this guy either. Don't think that 7 quarters or so of watching Dak that he is can't miss. This is coming from a huge Dak fan too who started a thread about how much I liked what I saw BEFORE any preseason games:
http://cowboyszone.com/threads/i-am-on-the-dak-train-and-i-love-our-draft-even-more-now.353540/

Any true fan knows how hard it is to find a 10-15 year QB. Not sure if this board is getting a lot younger but I witnessed 2000-2006 and it wasn't fun. Now I love Dak but Tony is our QB for the next 2-4 years. Having said this I am confident in Dak. I think he will exceed expectations. And even when he does, Romo should be and will be this teams starting QB.

I am as huge a fan of this team as so many on this board. I have seen us in the good times and the bad. Two years ago when we started the season with a loss to the 49ers, a bunch of fans around here gave up on the season already. Our defense wasn't any good. We had just gotten the **** kicked out of us in the first half. And this is what I said:
http://cowboyszone.com/threads/i-think-this-team-could-finish-10-6.299496/

Now I am not a pom pom guy by any means. I have had my negative times here too. I couldn't stand watching our former cupcake coach. I couldn't stand watching our current coach literally lose ball games on his own over the years. Since the 2014 run I feel positive about this team as long as we have a stud RB. What I am about to say next and you'll can copy this line, make it a signature, tell me I'm crazy, make fun of it or maybe even embrace it.

We WILL WIN a SUPER BOWL. If not this year it will be in 2017 so enjoy the run. Dak Prescott will hold the Lombardi trophy soon......and he will tell the QB who got it for him that he deserved it more than anyone else. Tony Romo WILL WIN us a SUPERBOWL.

I'm all for blind optimism, but there comes a point where it's not just blind, but deaf, mute and tactile dysfunctional.
I can see your a big fan. Why bother?

Your name and pic says enough about you. Go away.

Love your optimism, but 2-4 years? Father time has finally caught up with Mr Romo. I said it last year, and I'll say it now. Tony's time is play to play, not week to week and not year to year. Tony not only has injuries to fight against, he plays on a team with a horrible defense. A SB in Dallas for Tony is not happening. Sad but true. You can't change the way Tony plays, and as long as he plays that way, he's going to get injured. It's time to walk away.....

Wow, dude, you know nothing about me. Nice assumptions. I'm actually a huge Romo fan and have gone to bat defending him many times on the DC.com forums. I just think that for his own long-term health and for quality of life with his kids, it's time for him to retire. It sucks, but I'd much rather accept that than think he's risking permanent damage just for a possible run at the SB. I've always thought that he had what it takes to take a well built team to the SB and win it. Unfortunately it took them longer than it should have to build the team right because Jerry neglected the lines for so long. Had he kept the O-line decent over the years, Romo would not be in the position he is now.

As a fan of the Cowboys, I'd love for him to recover and take the helm, but given that he STILL refuses to throw the ball away and prefers risking his health, this is not an optimal situation. As a fan of Romo's, I'd rather see him retire and still be able to pick up and play with his kids without a wheelchair.

If Romo is healthy he plays other then that
Deathmonkey did bring up a salient point.

How selfish is it of the fans to want to see Romo back on te field for our entertainment?

They don't show that sunday on fox and to be honest, you really won't care that he will be able to play with his kids or not.

Once again you assume you know me or my motivations. I WILL care. I value people over the game of football any day of the week. I love football, but it's a game. I am not saying that he will retire. I am saying that, as a fan of his, he should. Let me make an assumption since you're so keen to: You have no kids and have no idea the regret that comes with sacrificing time with them for something else. I've sacrificed things for my kids and have no regrets for having done it. I know when I'm old I will appreciate having made those decisions that gave me that quality time. So how about stop assuming you know where someone is coming from or think they're feeding you lines and listen to what the message actually is.

If he comes back to play and wins the SB without another injury, I'll happily eat crow. I want him to have that ring, but NOT at the expense of permanent damage. Now you might think that's okay because it feeds your need for football, but not everyone thinks that way.

No, he is a husband and father first and foremost, and Candice probably reminds him of that daily. As the great Tom Landry use to say, "God, Family, and then football".

You best hope that Tony doesn't retire this season (By the way he won't). The cap hit would mean that we might have to let some really good players
go to get under and we might be left with lots of scrubs just to get 53 under. I guess if you want the no. 1 draft pick next year?

That's a very good point. I'd rather not have the no 1 draft pick next year if it can be helped.

Enjoy this season man. It won't be a 4-12 season that's for sure!
We don't know what it's going to be. What we do know is that Romo is going to miss major playing time for the 2nd consecutive year. But of course we shouldn't be worried because Romo is a football player and he'll be back soon. No problem.

It sucks either way but I'm excited to see this offense. Plus dak is the most promising qb we've had since we got romo.

This was not caused by being old, this was trauma, in six weeks this will be healed and good as new, if he takes care of himself. It was a combination of bad angles along with the tackle. this is not a career ending injury and independent of his other back issues, although I never believed the cyst information. Six Weeks which works out to about five games to start the season. Looking at the schedule I think Bengals is too early and Packers game is reasonable if he had to play and is fully mended, I would wait until after the bye and make the first game against the Eagles Oct 30th Sunday night.

.@tonyromo L1 vertebral body compression fracture: Bad news: out minimum 6wks Good news: no surgery, heals well, no long term issues. If @tonyromo wants to play, this injury will NOT end his career. No medical indication for forced retirement.

I will always believe in Romo and think he could have taken the team all of the way. There comes a point in time when a player has to step back and look at life with his family. He has two young sons and should consider how best to be there for them. For the sake of his long term health, I think I'd prefer him to retire now so that he can have some quality of life with them. It hurts to say that because I really enjoy watching him as the Cowboys QB, but as a fan of his I'd like to think that some things are more important than him winning a SB at this point. I don't want any player ruining himself for his team or for the fans. It's a game, not life or death. If he does come back and is the QB, he'll have my full support and faith, but I think that's the wrong choice for him in the long run.
Well - Again, exactly my (other) point.

Romo isn't going anywhere. Not to prove anyone wrong, not to play for Jerry Jones, not even to prove to himself that he simply can do it - He simply has a competitive fire and spirit that no one can logically verbalize a rational retirement situation for him. He's here to stay because he wants to. He wants to take his team to the Superbowl, because he wants to. He comes back in the game with no second thoughts half broken down with pain shots because he wants to - Because he wants to win. There's nothing you can tell this man that will pull him out of his competitive spirit, fighting for his team that he's endured so much through the years for.

With all of what you said, don't take me wrong, I do partially agree - But, in light of the fact, that, honestly... the hit he took for this season was a fluke... He's coming back stronger than ever after our bye in week 8, and going to stand there and do what he does best - Command and run this team.

A man's decision is his own, and in all honesty, I think even if he does play another 2-3 years, he will be just fine. Assuming no freak nature contact such as what just happened hits him again, and I'm going to be there every game of every season to love watching him fight for every moment he wants to take us right through the playoffs.

Chalk it up to family and future all you want, but to put it in Layman's terms...

Romo's not going anywhere.

And I can't wait to be a part of it.
