I really like this player and his abilities, however he turns 30 on 09/04/08. (NFL.com)

How many great corners play deep into their 30's?

He was talking on DC.com about making a huge salary like Clements 8 years 80 million.

If the front seven plays well and applies pressure; do you need to sign him to a huge long term deal?

What about using the franchise tag on him and buy yourself sometime to replace him?

Romo, Julius and Flo are going to be up for new contracts and JJ told Colombo he would get paid if he played well.

Who stays and who goes?

...........................and then what? Daft? Maybe we should go thru another 6 years of the rotating CB. We're built to make a run, finally, why in the world would you want to set that back? Free agent CB's aren't going to demand any less, right?

No way....after years and years of CB's that arent woith a damn, we finally have a darn good one. A top 5 CB in the NFL. We keep him for his career, and nothing less.

Newman works out like a champ and keeps his body in good shape, i bet he will play at a high level for atleast 6 more years if not longer.

Somebodys gonna walk next year rather its Newman, Jones, Adams, or Romo we are going to lose at least one possibly two of the above. But I think Newman is the safest of the bunch, though he may be the most expensive.

The two least likeliest of going anywhere from the ones you mentioned are Newman and Romo.

Newman still is under contract until 2008. Well, if Romo plays great, he's not going anywhere.

Adams is most likely leaving anyways. And if Jones, leaves he's easily more replaceable than Newman or Romo.

We only re-sign Flozel if McQuistan or Free haven't shown they have the ability to be startering LTs. If necessary, we could franchise Flozel for a year to give both more time to develop.

Colombo is around 27/28 so if he has a really good year, I can easily see the Cowboys signing him to a new long-term contract.

Since both Henry & Glenn have age/injury concerns, re-signing Newman to a 5-7 year contract is a given. We don't have any other option since neither Reeves nor Jones are starters & Brown (Ball?) need time to develop. Sure hope Brown comes along quickly but also believe we must address CB question early on first day.

If Romo plays well in 07, you better believe Cowboys will offer him a real good contract.

Will be interesting to see how well Jones does in Garrett's offense. I've heard they will be throwing more to him out of the backfield which gives him better opportunity to use his greatest strength--his speed--to pick up extra yardage & score TDs. If he has a great season (even assuming he splits the carries with Barber), it will be reflected on Cowboys winning more games. Of all the players who frankly were glad to see Parcells go, I really believe Julius Jones had the biggest cause to complain. But he has to produce this year.

Most contracts are written so that you can cut the guy after the 3rd year and the cap hit is the same as keeping him. After year 4, you save money by cutting the player.

With Newman, if we sign him to a mega deal for '07 and beyond (as I believe we will do before the year starts), we are "stuck" with him for 3 years - I don't think anyone is going to argue that he can't be great for another 3 years. Then it is pretty much year by year.

So what is the problem?

There is no way that Romo plays out his current deal this year.

You can't have the face of your franchise as a potential UFA at the end of the year. Midway through camp -- probably the week that someone from ESPN is spending time at TC -- Jerry will make a splash and announce Romo's new deal.

For reference, Darrell Green played until he was 42 (20 years). So it's not a stretch that Newman could play in his early 30s. Let's worry about our other corners before letting our best one walk.

I don't want to think about going into next season with out Newman. Yes, a explosive yr will really creat leverage for him, but I think what he has done is enough to warrant a big pay day. And like stated before after a 3rd or 4th yr, you take a good look to see if he is still playing at Top 5 level corner. If not, then you try to move him.
Success for the team and individuals will play a big part in the resigning of Romo and JJ. They must be at the top of their game to return. I'm more concern about JJ then Romo. I think the offensive scheme has been tailored for Romo success. As for Flo, good or bad yr, I really don't he will get another huge payday out of Dallas.

Why do people always take the most EXTREME case as evidence?

Add Herb Adderley (33), Mel Blount (35), Willie Brown (38), Jimmy Johnson (38) and Dick Lane (37) to that list.

The other thing to keep in mind about this is that the cap has expanded so much that it's not like it used to be.

in fact, a team can afford to over pay some guys..or eat a year of a contract because there's a lot of cap room.

IMO the 30 year old mark has never meant less than in Newman's case... Maybe with Trent Green or Kurt Warner types.

Newman was 25 I believe as a rookie. He's only played 4 seasons. If he were a 30 year old with 8-10 NFL years on his legs, I would give your concerns more thought. Not now. He's still on his rookie contract. Barring major injury he will play well into his 30s... knock on wood. He's not your typical 30 year old NFL player.
