:laugh2: I didn't know we had so many T. Newman fans on this board. I think Tuna might have a good point, 30 year cover corner? He's a bit older than I had originally thought..

Did he start college late or what?

BTW, on the age issue, he was held back a grade early in school... Something like fourth or fifth grade.

Is this serious? Please tell me it isn't.

I was raising SEVERAL questions.

The Patriots approach to the salary cap is not afraid to replace CB's.

But that obviously is NOT Jerry's approach.

Who was the last player who left here after his rookie deal was up that was a strong contributor?

Randall Godfrey back in 2000. That's who.

Wait, you think that letting one of two players on this team that is arguably one of the top 3 at his postion walk is sound reasoning?

How do you plan on replacing him? Getting a younger guy with just as many miles on him for an equally costly contract through FA? Maybe we should just wait it out until we can find another sure bet via the draft...that should only take two or three years. How about we just us that top ten pick next year on a CB...we don't need a QB or RB should JJ or Romo not live up to expectations? WR? I'm sure Glenn and TO will be back yet again...no need to use one of those two 1st rounders on a WR either. The franchise tag is a thought, but that just buys a a year or so.

....or maybe we could just give the guy the contract he's earned, and save ourselves the trouble. Just the thought.

I really like this player and his abilities, however he turns 30 on 09/04/08. (NFL.com)

How many great corners play deep into their 30's?

He was talking on DC.com about making a huge salary like Clements 8 years 80 million.

If the front seven plays well and applies pressure; do you need to sign him to a huge long term deal?

What about using the franchise tag on him and buy yourself sometime to replace him?

Romo, Julius and Flo are going to be up for new contracts and JJ told Colombo he would get paid if he played well.

Who stays and who goes?

Excuse me? :starspin

It is also is not time to make snap judgments.

I would look into resigning Newman long term after this season. I have a feeling with our pressure defense, he will have more opportunities to make the big plays that he has not been able to make thus far in his career. We should also have a better read on his true worth.

We have plenty of time, there should not be such a rush. Besides, right now the Clements contract is in everyone's mind. I would let things cool down as for all we know in a few years, that might be something teams look back on as a mistake.

You take a chance on it getting even more out of control, but that contract was so grossly out of the range that I would wait to see what precedent it establishes before I let a player or agent use it as a benchmark.

According to Mickey Spagnola, a major theme emerged from the head coaching interviews, that theme was this:

Terence Newman is the best player on the team.

I don't think he is the most indispensible player on our defense right now.

I value Ware much more. He is a close second probably.

But if I had to choose between one or the other, I would choose Ware. Easily.

We should let one of our two best defensive players walk because of that? Wow.

Puhlease. The only one worth anything that they let go was Ty Law, and that's only because he suffered a season ending injury and it saved them $10 million in cap space.

They haven't been blessed with many good CBs, aside from Asante Samuel, and you can bet they're going to try to keep him.

Terence Newman is the best man to man cover corner in the league. His ability to man up against very fast receivers in the slot go unappreciated by most of the national media. However, the coaches in the league see the game film, and they see his value.

Newman can play an entire game and go unnoticed during the game, because Newman has his man covered during the game. Therefore, quarterbacks shy away from him.

Go back and look at the monster numbers Steve Smith has put on Tampa Bay during the past four years. Ronde Barber doesn't man up on him, and Steve Smith has his way, and T.B. loses just about all of the games.

Newman deserves to be recognized among the best in the league.
