Should we let Newman walk?

All of which has NOTHING to do with my post.

Thanks for the non-reply.

I know Moss got a heavy dose of Newman in that 05 game in Dallas, because I saw it. The next year, he shut him down in Dallas and, Newman kept the 2 TDs and 150+ yards of offense out of the game. He shadowed him like he did for a great deal of the 05 game in Dallas. Only in 2006, Newman wasn't pulled off of him to play prevent defense.

Newman was pulled off Shockey in the 2005 game in Dallas, and Shockey went off at the end of the game, just like Santana Moss did, and Dallas almost lost to the Giants at home because of the same prevent defense that was deployed against the Commanders in game #2 of the 2005 season. Newman was taken off of Moss in 2005, and Dallas lost the game. Newman was taken off of Shockey at the very end of the Giants 2005 game in Dallas.

If you want to argue that "Newman wasn't on Moss the entire Commanders game" in 2005 . Fine. Your trying to score a technical point by stating the the obvious. We all saw the end of the game when Moss was allowed to run free from Newman. Those two pass plays that he had was about all he did in that game. Henry can't cover him. Glenn can't. The safeties can give help, but they can't compenstate for a corner who gets beaten by him. If Newman wasn't covering Moss during the 05 game in Dallas, Moss would have had at close to 300 yards and 4 touchdowns in that game.

In 2006, Newman shut him down and was allowed to finish the job, because I saw it again. He was one of the players of the game. Parcells didn't allow Newman to be pulled off of Moss like he allowed him to be in the 2005 game, so Moss could rack up 150+ yards and two long TDs.

Newman did give up a TD to Mike Williams during the last game. I was wrong about that play. I didn't see the game, so I was recalling a different play where it looked like a busted coverage.

Still, I'll talk touchdowns allowed all day. Newman gave up zero TDs in 05.
While Bailey gave up two that I know about. (K. Johnson and T.O.) in 2005 alone.

Newman gave up one in Atlanta and one against Detroit. That is two TDs allowed in two years. Bailey gave up at least two in 05 alone.

If some of the readers want to crown Champ Bailey, crown him. I don't care.

I am out.

Parcells also said in a presser that Wayne was Newman's guy. They were manned up, and not supposed to switch. Newman screwed up on that one.

He's a great corner - there are just things Champ does better than Newman. They both change the game, Champ just has perfected baiting QBs into throwing at him. Sometimes he still pays for it, too.

He gave up 3 last year. Mike Williams. Ashley Lelie. Reggie Wayne. As I had already stated......

As far as crowning Champ?

*** are you even talking about? NOWHERE have I said anything about Newman's abilities.

Nowhere have I said Champ is superior.

You are making up an argument and constantly going back and forth with me about how Newman "is better" than Champ. All I did in the original reply to you is correct you when you said Newman gave up his 1st TD to Wayne (when you said Lelie) and then asked even if Newman "just used the wrong hand", does it not still count since it was his responsibility? And I also pointed out the Mike Williams TD on Newman.

And there never was an argument from my side. All I did was give a couple of examples when Newman wasn't following someone around.

You took it and ran with it on some tangent that had nothing to do with what I said and came up with some elaborate point I was apparently trying to make. Don't bother replying to this. I don't need statistics on how Newman did in 2003 or something else that has no relevance to what I was saying....

Newman won't get anywhere near a record breaking contract.

He's a great player, and he probably has another 4-5 years at an elite level, at least.

However, we'd be fools to pay him any type of record type deal...80million...I'd definitely let him walk or trade him while he still has a year on his contract if he won't rework it when the time comes...no way we should allow him to get to his final year because then we have no leverage.

I love Newman, but we haven't won any divisional titles because of him, and all players can be replaced...Renfro, Deon...those were both better than TNew, and I'm not sure some other CB's in our past like Walls didn't do more to make us a winner. Resign him and give him his due, but pay him Champ Bailey type money.....no way.

There is no way that Romo plays out his current deal this year.

You can't have the face of your franchise as a potential UFA at the end of the year. Midway through camp -- probably the week that someone from ESPN is spending time at TC -- Jerry will make a splash and announce Romo's new deal.

The 50,000-watt tower of power, truth and justice heartily agrees.

Makes sense to me to tear up the existing contract and git a new one for Romo.
IMHO, Jerra will SAVE money by giving him a new contract THIS season instead of waiting until after Romo lights up the scoreboard this season.
That is the price of doing business and Romo certainly deserves the bump in salary now rather than later when he becomes a really expensive UFA.

Getting great CBs is so easy to do. I have to wonder about some people. How long was it from Deion to Newman? How many CBs did we waste picks on? In football today you have to have at least one top CB. Letting Newman go would be plain stupid.

I really like this player and his abilities, however he turns 30 on 09/04/08. (NFL.com)

How many great corners play deep into their 30's?

He was talking on DC.com about making a huge salary like Clements 8 years 80 million.

If the front seven plays well and applies pressure; do you need to sign him to a huge long term deal?

What about using the franchise tag on him and buy yourself sometime to replace him?

Romo, Julius and Flo are going to be up for new contracts and JJ told Colombo he would get paid if he played well.

Who stays and who goes?

I have to say that this is probably the worst idea in the history of ideas, and that includes such mental milestones as "We Built This City On Rock and Roll" and the Vietnam War

Maybe, if not for the fact that Newman is the only known entity in the universe capable of covering such a route. Therefore, letting him walk would in turn be a far worse idea than implementing said route. :laugh2:

Well, if Barber doesn't shadow Smith everywhere, then not all of those catches/yards/touchdowns are Barber's fault.

And its not like Newman shadows the elite WR's everywhere. Remember Moss back in '05. Newman was off guarding someone else. Who was their elite WR? Who ended up scoring?

Plaxico Burress is the elite WR on the Giants team. But Henry spent a great deal of time on him.

Vintage,

I never said it was Barber's fault. Terence Newman does have the ability to shadow receivers all over the field in man coverage. (ex. Moss, Smith, Owens, and Shockey) While he might not cover them on every single play during a game, he covers them near the sidelines and in open space more than any other corner in the league. If your defining shadowing as every single play during a game, your taking the term shadowing too literal. I am just stating the obvious. When receivers get a "heavy dose" of Newman during a game, he is shadowing them or covering them in the slot and outside.

The first TD Moss gave up was on 2nd down while Dallas was in prevent. Yes. Moss was on his side of the field, and Yes, Newman wasn't on him during that play. The second was on Newman's side of the field again, and it happened on 4th down. It was the 70 yarder.

In my opinion, Shockey is their elite receiver, and it isn't even close.

Vintage,

I never once said Newman was better than Bailey. Check the log. I never said the Atlanta touchdown "didn't count". I said that I was wrong on the Mike Williams touchdown.

Go back and reread what I have written. I have acted as Terence Newman's lawyer on this thread. I have built a strong case that Newman's elite man cover skills enable him to shadow or cover receivers and tightends in the slot and on the outside. I have stated that Newman can shut people down when he is given the assignment. I have given examples where Newman's play has affected the outcomes of games. I have used Newman's man to man coverage skills in the slot to differentiate him from other elite corners in the league.

I said some of the readers may want to crown Bailey. I am attacking this perception that Champ Bailey is so much better than Newman, Barber, Samuel, Shepperd, and Clements. If people want to crown Bailey the King and send him to the steakhouse to eat, fine. Just don't tell me that the other corners listed above have to eat at McDonalds.

I have been fighting for Newman. The guy in your picture. I have got nothing but resistance from you. You seem like you are trying to poke holes in my case for Newman. I put the T.B. stats up against Smith to show Newman's skills, not trash a Pro Bowl corner.

Don't worry. I will not bother you again.

Clements salary will look average in 2 years

you pay whatever it takes to keep a top-5 performer on your roster, and Newman will probably still deserve one of the richest contracts for CBs, as he's a better corner than Clements is

If Newman had gotten three interceptions last season, would you consider him elite?

Depends. Had they counted the Detroit pick that got called back (did it go for a TD?), and throw in a few other game changing ints, then yes. But if you were to add 2 ints to let's say the titans game, then no.

BTW, after last year I believed he was on his was to becoming elite, and still do believe he's on his way. For the record, I honestly believe Newman has the skills to be elite, and this more aggressive defense will catapult him there.

And no I don't believe Asante Samuels is on Champ's level. I don't even think NE believes that, notice how quick they caved with Richard Seymour's holdout. They recognize elite players and pay them, look at how successful most guys are after leaving NE. IMO he's a product of the system (still a good player, kinda like Portis who was great with the broncos, and probably just very good with the skins). Once agin INTs don't make a great CB, but they are the difference between very good and great.
