Should we re-sign Leary?

  • Leary is currently ranked the 20th best guard out of 64 starting guards. Collins was ranked 60th ( pff rankings)
  • Running game has been better with Leary - could be coincidental but it started improving at the same time Leary replaced Collins
  • Leary is the meanest OLineman we got according to the other linemen.
  • Would love to keep him, but I think he gets good money elsewhere.
Love the player! Go Cowboys
Yeah, will be hard to pay big money to 4 OL. This means have to win Super Bowl this year with great offense, then draft a OL next year so we can win it again.

Leary was an undrafted FA. There's no compensatory pick. If we let him go, we get nothing in return.
Aren't compensatory picks based on contract signed? The round drafted was based on the transition tag with right to match from what I remember...but I am getting old.

Eggs-Zactly...

Keep Leary if Collins plays RT, but when healthy Collins is clearly better than Leary and the upside is greater as well...

Collins imo has more potential but has never been consistently enough for me to consider him better than leary. His highs are better and great highlight plays but he has more lows than leary who is consistently good.

If his knee is okay and he can be considered a bargain signing I do it and trade Collins. LaEl is inconsistent but has so much promise. His value is high. In 2 years we won't be able to afford him. If I can get leary who is more consistent to a longish deal and am comfortable with his medical I do that. Collins can get you a 2nd imo

Great counter point, Han, just wanted to say that. I'm a La'el fanboi (so damn raw, but flashes elite talent), but the logic in your post shouldn't be ignored.

If Collins is good enough to start at RT over Free/Green I'd move him there. If he's not I'd just keep him as my #1 backup if anyone gets hurt.

If we smartly get rid of Dez's and Romo's contracts, absolutely. Our OL depth is just not there.
WTHeck are you talking about? It is because we have depth that we've been able to play at a high level with Tyron Smith and Collins missing games in the games thus far. Question is if Leary is willing to sign again since he originally lost his starting job.

This is false. Just did some quick research on this and immediately found that the Ravens were awarded a 4th rd pick for Dannell Ellerbe. He was and undrafted Free Agent.

You are correct.

Collins is not a tackle prospect. Even before the draft when he was thought to be a first round pick, it was as a guard, not tackle. He's a power guy who struggles most in pass protection. Free is not a bum or liability just because he's not in Smith's league. This line isn't running and pass protecting in spite of Free; he's part of it.

Leary will not be resigned. Collins is the future at LG. Green is the future at RT. Seems clear to me. Collins and Green are both two years away from a payday. That's critical to improving this defense. You cannot pay everyone.

That's not true. People just didn't see him as a LT. Multiple draft reports said RT or OG.

He played LT as the highest level in college (SEC).

Several draft reports had him as the best OT in that draft.

We have to pay 3 All-Pro OL so we may just have to draft another OL, might not be able to afford Leary or La'el.
I think we can get Collins cheap because he fell in the draft.....if we offered 4/20m with 12m guaranteed after next year he would jump at it.......I think Leary would be offended by that offer....plus Collins is younger and healthier

Getting Collins at 5m aav would be marvelous, B.

You really think he would that low, ey?

He hasn't been 'paid' yet and if we extend him after 2017 that is a year early and he might jump at life changing money.....a 10m signing bonus is hard to turn down after making 500k a year

I've said this before and I'm about to say it again.... Resign Leary let him stay at LG and kick Collins out to RT and let Free be the swing T.
