i want to but i dont know if we can afford. he must have been one of the most expensive backup lineman in the league.
after this season he will expect and deserve starters pay. is he an assumed starter next year? he wasnt this year. llucky that he is the best "back up" in the league. little chance we get away with it two years in a row. (unless he wants to end career here)

Sorry, I didn't take the time to read all 8 or 9 pages so if someone hit on this subject then I'm sorry.

During the summer, it's imperative to find out if Collins can actually play right tackle. If he is very good there then problem solved and we can sign Leary .However , we need to know if Leary actually wants to sign for a solid contract instead of breaking us.

This offensive line is too good to break up. Even if Mary signs somewhere else, I'd seriously think about getting another guard, or tackle in the third or 4th next season.

Sorry, I'm using voice command to talk on my phone

As opposed to Doug Free?

What Free provides or lack thereof is not an argument to move Collins where he has the upside to be an all-pro in the future to a position he never impressed at.

It's the same argument I read about moving Martin to tackle in the future. Why? He's an all-pro at guard. You don't mess wit that unless his play start to decline and you need to switch it up. Right now, it's best to watch and see how Green progresses or look to FA or the draft to find Free's replacement.

Eggs-Zactly...

Keep Leary if Collins plays RT, but when healthy Collins is clearly better than Leary and the upside is greater as well...

Collins never excelled at OT? He's only playing guard because they love Free's "Vet Influence" or loyalty to a fault.

Look I love Leary, but Collins is the superior athelete here. Dude could play RT easily...

Wrong, the coaches HAVE tried Collins at tackle. He simply didn't impress, he doesn't have the skills or even the balance to be a starting tackle. The issues that get brought up about Collins, you understand it will be WORSE if he gets moved to tackle, right?

No, he couldn't "easily" play RT. He may one day be a "good" RT, but he wouldn't have the upside he does at guard. He's at the position he needs to be.

Leary is gone
Green is RT
Collins is LG
Free is Swing OT if he takes pay cut
Draft an OG/C or keep Looney if they like him

At some point, you need to trust your player development and scouts to find young, cheap labor to replace guys who stand to make good money when they hit free agency. As well as Ron Leary has played this season, as well as the grit and attitude that he brings to the line, I think you let him walk and don't think twice about it. La'el Collins will be highly motivated next year to play well and earn himself a big contract opportunity.

Keep in mind that the Cowboys will have huge holes in their secondary next year (Carr, Claiborne and Church are all free agents), and have two pending free agents at the WR position. They also need to consider finding a TE replacement for Witten. They have to be able to identify and plug in a relatively cheap option to groom as a swing player, and ultimately move up when the time comes. With Smith, Frederick and Martin as the core of the line, it will remain amongst the league's best if not the best.

The added benefit of how Leary has played is that the comp pick that they stand to get for him next year looks a lot better.

Controversial question, I know. We have a beast in La'el, but La'el is still raw and Leary is clearly the better of the two right now (just watch @Idgit's Green Bay clip posted in this Zone).

Leary has been a pro bowl level guard in his time here, but because of the splash signing of Collins, and the fact that he plays with Smith, Martin, and TFred, he is often overlooked and brushed aside.

He hits the second level like a boss on run plays and punks DT's in pass-pro.

Due to his knee would it be viable to sign him to a decent contract (around 6-8aav) and keep Collins and push him (Collins) out to RT? Free hasn't been bad, but as @xwalker has said many times, the Oline and coaching staff often have to send coverage over to his side, especially in pass-pro.

This guy isn't a Parnell type, he is actually an incredibly effective guard, every game he plays. Look at how Zeke has performed with this beast back in.

What say you guys? Is it too much cap allocated to one unit, to keep all five? Am I dreaming at the thought of Leary taking a 6-8aav (@bkight13) deal with teams like IND and TEN out there that need Oline?

What do you think, Zoners?
I haven't heard the latest prognosis on the knee...it's nice to see that he's back in strong form and doesn't appear to be bothered by the chronic groin issues of last season. I must say if we do decide to keep him, it would most definitely be with the Collins shift to RT in mind. The good news is the salary we're paying LA'el would give us flexibility to extend Leary and offset that with the savings we'd get from releasing Free. Obviously all of this is predicated on closely monitoring Ron over the remaining season and determining the odds for his continued longer term health. I say this would be the best of all possible outcomes in my view since his play has been beastly this early season and we have a hedge for RT in Green so there would be an immediate plan B (and even C) if Collins falters at RT or Leary at LG. Either way, Collins' comp level allows us a lot of options in our approach.

Didn't read this whole thread but there seems to be too much talk about Collins at RT. I think we have our future RT in Chaz Green, our LG in Collins. It would be great to sign Leary but it's a luxury we shouldn't be spending cap dollars on. Let Leary walk and take the compensatory pick. I think he will receive a hefty contract so it should net a nice draft pick.

No. We have to resign Martin and our CB's and find some defense. You let Leary walk; you keep Collins on his rookie contract. Having a top starting caliber OG on the bench as your backup is a luxury you cannot afford when you ha contracts like Romo's and Dez's to work around.

Martin can move to RT.

Collins and Leary can command the OG spots.

Why so complicated?

Leary was an undrafted FA. There's no compensatory pick. If we let him go, we get nothing in return.

I like it... Only thing is, I think Green is better RT prospect than Collins. With that in mind, I'd rather have Collins at LG and Green at RT. Green even looked good at LT when Tyron was out.

Tyron | Collins | FredBeard | Martin | Green - looks like a great dominating OL for years to come.

Looks great to me, too, Pete! I have the utmost faith in Green as at least an above average RT. As long as he stays on his feet (i.e. injury free) :)

  • Leary is currently ranked the 20th best guard out of 64 starting guards. Collins was ranked 60th ( pff rankings)
  • Running game has been better with Leary - could be coincidental but it started improving at the same time Leary replaced Collins
  • Leary is the meanest OLineman we got according to the other linemen.
  • Would love to keep him, but I think he gets good money elsewhere.

Love the player! Go Cowboys
