I think he will be the real deal and it will be like when they got McNabb.

Well, I have nothing against a great rivalry the next 10 years with the Eagles and Wentz if this means we are competitive, too.

Well, we will need a QB as I think this may be Romo's last year.

If Prescott isn't even the backup this year, he'll never be the starter.

If Prescott is the backup this year, the team's making a big mistake. Prescott needs to be QB3 this season. QB2 next season, or pushed off the roster by whichever QB pick we make in 2017. But let's not have our backup be a guy who needs to be worrying about his footwork and his fundamentals right now. If he demonstrates he can handle a steep learning curve, he can compete next year when he's actually ready to play.

Showers and Prescott appear to be the same guy. Both are projects and so is Moore for what is worth. We can't have that many projects. Kudos to Showers for rising up to the challenge. I'm pulling for him. This reminds me of the time Romo was buried in the depth chart behind when Quincy and Hutchinson in'03, Testaverde and Henson, in 04 and Bledsoe and Henson in 05. It took him 4 years to be the backup.

Maybe not, but all he can do is play well when given the opportunity. Hes apparently off to a good start, so Ill just consider this to be positive news.

If you think so. All you will hear all OTA's is how guys look great. Then they get cut or never play a down during the season. Personally, I take nothing away from these OTA's other than injuries.

I didn't care for the dak pick. Think showers has a better shot at being an NFL qb.

I've said Showers looks good for a year but get shot down at the notion and accused of homerisms for being a Fan. Said that he'd have a better chance to win than Cassel, Weeden or Moore as a Rookie but was quickly brushed aside like a mere annoyance.

Certainly pulling for the kid, he has the quicks fa sho and his release is there. Like Dak just all the tools to develop physically/athletically but there is something else about Showers that catches your eye, could be the "It" factor, we'll see!

That's what real Fans do wait and see, always loved the notion of a Romo like success story, unlike the NBA success stories like Russell Wilson happen all the time in the NFL. Call it far fetched, you'd be wrong.

lol, he's shining in OTA's? Fantastic.

My first thought. And I was not impressed with Showers last year, either and don't expect him to necessarily even stay a QB. But I'd be *thrilled* if we were to have somehow hit on a backup capable of beating out even Moore from our own PS.

I never understood this type of criticism. He's doing well in OTAs. That's a good thing. There isn't any anointing oil out. Can't we just be happy about early signs of potential improvement?

If he was out there sailing balls over WRs heads...i'd imagine the response from folks would be different.

It's not criticism. It's just that you're supposed to look good in 7 on 7s. If you don't, it's a problem. If you do, it just means we haven't gotten to a point where the QBs are actually being tested yet.

I mean that's fair. If anything Risen should take criticism for making a thread (hence making a big deal) out of a single bullet point in a larger article during the first week of OTAs.

Well stated. Until we see some 1's vs 1's and they are down to roster cuts, many of these guys will shine. Also I doubt reporters want to say " we really suck, and regardless of the return of Romo/Dez 4-12 - 3-13 here we come...

From Broaddus....

Hearing some whispers from those in the know that through two days of OTAs – Jameill Showers has been the second-best quarterback on the field. In watching him during practice, I thought his accuracy and poise were outstanding in the opportunities he received.

Thx for sharing. While to be sure this isn't a "stop the presses" update, it's nice to see positive reports coming from unexpected places. Let's hope he continues his upward trend thru the rest of preseason and hopefully gives the staff something to think about come time to trim the roster.

What I don't get is why so many responses to this update are fraught with cynicism and sarcasm. The dude looks good early - why be so quick to dismiss or criticize? I know that past disappointments as fans (trust me - I've been thru tons of them to the point of tears) can leave us jaded but that's no reason to throw baby out with the bath water for goodness' sake.

I recall a time when another UDFA QB started looking good unexpectedly. How did that work out for us?

Perhaps we've lucked into another one and perhaps we haven't. Either way, let's let this thing play out and hope we're not simply training him to benefit another team - which we've tended to be really great at these past years...friggin Oakland A's of football. Lol.

Thx avian for sharing!

Nope. Not from me anyway.

If you can't do your job well in OTA's, you shouldn't be at OTA's.

However, if he was out there missing some throws, I wouldn't care about that either.

If he was out there missing EVERY throw at OTA's, well then I'd wonder what he was doing there in the first place.

While I see this as something not to get real excited about, I still rather read this than read he is struggling. No matter if you are the #1 pick or an UDFA, I just want to see/read/hear about you progressing/ growing as a player.

It is the same old same old year after year.

A certain number of people get carried away with any sign of good news. A bigger number get carried away with any signs of bad news.

It is encouraging that Showers looks better than he did a year ago. He has some tools but also needed a lot of work. It is nice to know that he seems to have a better grasp of what he needs to do and that be is looking more accurate than a year ago. A few are going to poo poo that no matter what because in their mind the story has already been written on Showers....he wasn't drafted, he isn't a protypical QB with a laser arm so he will never be anything.

The difference between Showers and Moore per se is that Moore was already considered a near finished product mentally but his knock is that he is always going to come up short physically. He can know the offense inside and out, but when you struggle with throwing 10-15 yards downfield it is always going to be an issue. And the fact is, if he was going to try to improve that, he would have built himself up in the weight room. We know about Parcells having an obsession with guys building their leg strength and core....Moore hasn't done any of that. He still looks like the 98 pound weakling he came into the league as. How can you legitimately not work on what your biggest weakness is in 4 years in the league? To me, he hasn't committed to what he needs to do to get better and give himself a chance. It's like Romo on working on one thing each offseason. One year it was the back shoulder throws. One year it was moving his feet in the pocket. He is always trying to work on his weaknesses and get better.

Showers came in with more physically but didn't have the kind of mental training that Moore had and probably wasn't schooled very much on the fundamentals. So the fact that he looks more poised and more accurate should be a good sign. By the same token no one should get ahead of themselves and think he is going to be the backup. He still is a longshot to make this team, probably another year on PS if anything here. I think to an extent this is Moore's last chance...if he doesn't show an ability to at least be a short term #2 he probably isn't back next year.
