Signing a veteran corner

It seems the top of the corner class for this offseason is going to command too much money and strap us down to long term deals. Like Finnegan, Porter, Grimes, Carr and probably even Carlos Rogers. What does everyone think of signing a solid veteran to short term deal who can still play? These are all guys who we can get at a discount due to injury or age:

Marcus Trufant
Rashean Mathis
Terrell Thomas
Bryant McFadden
Jason Allen
Will Allen
Aaron Ross

Sign one of these and draft one.

I'd like a physical CB like Jason Allen, no one is talking about him, but I think he should be the target when factoring in need with price range.

I bet JJ and crew don't make a splash in FA with CB. They just inked Scandrick to a long term deal, Jenkins is due one next year. I think they sign a Frank Walker type and draft one. Cheaper in the long run and that seems to be Jerry's MO lately in FA.

I think the FA splash will be a guard and D-Lineman.

I want Finnegan bad. He's my top priority. This backfield needs some nasty in it. He's all I want as DB besides a young draft pick.

I would hope to commit resources to a long term solution not a short term fix. If somehow Thomas does become a FA I would be interested since he only has 4 years in. The others not I'm really interested in.

That's right. Go after Finnegan. There seems to be no effort as yet by the Titans to negotiate a new contract, so they may be willing to let him test the FA market. I see our budget as $6 million- that is the savings from Newman's release.

Finnegan is a feisty CB who has an in your face attitude, a physical style and can back it up with his play. Just what we need, a little corner, who plays big, and has an attitude to match. As a CB, the guy is a very active player and a tackling machine in run support.

He is 27 now, so I would like to see a 3-5 year contract that is CAP friendly in the last season or two, just in case. If we can't get a contract with Finnegan for that CAP number, only then do I look at the second tier.

FA wont solve this problem ... Elam didnt fix our secondary now did he? You need to build through the draft and hit on your draft picks. Spend big on the DLine and OLine ... save money in the secondary.

We may actually need 2 corners..didnt you hear? We're trading Mike Jenkins, I read it here

Brandond Carr, if your going to be paying big money for a CB get a guy that has 3-4 experience and 26 years old. Then you don't have to relie on a CB in the draft as much. Still draft the bpa where possible at CB, lets say Heyward, Minnifield, or Boykin and play Carr, Jenkins, Scandrick and draft pick. How many times Jenkins gets hurt we need a good young corner and a good draft pick.

Hate to do it, but Newman's demise leaves the cupboard pretty bare after Jenkins and O-Scan. We will need to get somebody- we can 't afford to draft and pray we get a starter at the CB spot. It is one of the hardest positions on the field for a young player to just step on and have instant success.

Taking experience and proven ability will cost us, but with what we save from Newman's release- it is a wash. We paid Newman like he was a shut down veteran, and he was far from it.

I think Dallas will be drafting their #1 CB with the 14th pick, leaving Jenkins and Scandrick as the #2 and #3 CBs. I can also see them holding on to Ball as the #4 and maybe draft a CB late on day 2 of the draft to develop.

And I think they'll target CB high in the draft because I strongly believe they'll look for a top starting C early in free agency. They don't have the cap room to target bth CB and C in free agency, and targeting a C will be easier because teams are more likely to let their older linemen go in free agency than their top corners. Plus getting a C will be more economical.

Even if we did for some crazy reason trade Jenkins we would then need 3 CBs. We need to replace Newman, sign Brandon Carr, and a replacement for Ball, (draft pick).

I'm totally against signing and over paying for a old CB or a CB like Finnigan who doesn't play in man coverage that much and when he does play vs a bigger WR in man he gets owned, like he did vs Johnson.

IF you going to pay big money to a CB get a young CB with man cover 3-4 experence. Brandon Carr is just as much a must to me as Carl Nicks is.

no any plan with keeping Ball is a failure.

I'm talking about Ball as the #4 CB, and he could also back up Scandrick in the slot/#3 CB spot. And he's still serviceable on special teams. This is why he's likely to be kept, and don't see that as a bad thing under those circumstances.

We also drafted a CB ladt year (forget his name) but he got injured or something. Anyway, they'll continue to develoip him for those late CB spots also.

Both kids with 1st round talent Kirkpatrick and Claiborne will be gone by #14 ... so you are saying we reach for a 2nd round talent at #14 just to fill a need a corner. sounds about like a Jerry draft.

The whole coonection to needing a veteran C was lost, I guess.

The OL is YOUNG, and will get younger, epsecially at G, so balancing it out with a veteran at C makes sense.

At CB and S we have nothing but veternas, so making one CB be a rookie is not so bad to balance the whole secondary out with veternas and youth.

Sure they do. They will be sitting there with enough CAP room ($25 million after the Newman/Kitna adjustments) to take two solid free agents, A CB on defense, and an O-Lineman for the offense. The CB signing is basically a wash paid for with Newman's money. ;)

These two signings will be what enables us on draft day to draft wisely without being boxed into a corner.
