Signing a veteran corner

Corners...cost...mucho...dinero

Which is why you are always looking to target one in the draft. Especially with the new rookie pay scale. there is no longer a huge financial risk with a rookie, just the risk of not selecting a player who can contribute.

Since we failed at doing that and got busted in the chops by the Newman melt down...

I say we sign a tried and true talent at FA to plug in at CB- like Finnegan- he is a priority for this team as much as a $50 million FA Guard like Nicks.

The market value is HIGH for CB's. Heck, SCANDRICK got $25 million, and he's considered a below average to average CB. Jenkins will command big money, bank on it.

Yeah, and we way overpaid for Scandrick!

OL, DL, LB, and CB should always be on the radar in EVERY draft.

Especially OT and CB as they are premium positions and cost mucho dinero.

I really want Kirkpatrick. Young tough likes man to man and hit. We don't need to bring in a guy who's over 27 and could End up like tnew in a couple years
Just read on PFT that he was busted for Pot, wouldn't surprise me if he's off our board now.

More of a general observation than a crack on your post. I just see a lot of wishlists with Rogers on the "A" ones.

Carr is on a lot of them too, but at least he is younger, more consistent and likely to get better bang for the buck.

I suspect that it is because of Rogers rating this past season.

He's big, he's able to match up physically with the big WRs in the league and he's at an age where he will likely not get a long term contract. All of these things are attractive about Rogers. I think most would like to draft CB talent and develop it but at the same time, you need guys who can give you time for a few season until the young guys are ready. Rogers would seem to fit that description. I think that this is why he is interesting to many. I know that this is why he is interesting to me. I do not think he will be as expensive and it is likely that his contract will not hurt us much down the line.

I want Finnegan bad. He's my top priority. This backfield needs some nasty in it. He's all I want as DB besides a young draft pick.

.....you mean the guy Andre Johnson slapped around?..........meh, I'm desperate enough to agree despite this shameful moment for him. BTW: Fisher is supposedly all over him and Rams fans think he's going there...............we shall see.

yes but who says you have to pay them mucho dinero

8 mill a year your looking at top 10 CBs. Carr and Jenkins are not top 10 CBs.

If I had to pick between Carr and Jenkins, then I pick the bigger and healthier CB and thats Carr.

yes, i agree. carr is good.

not signing any over 30 year old corners, all you would be doing is replacing Newman with another one

Don't kid yourself. If Newman could still play his position, even at a diminished fashion, he'd still be on the squad next year. The idea would be to sign a high priced Vet for only a short contract until a younger player can be drafted and brought along. I don't know that we can really afford to sign a top level CB who is both young and talented. We need to do this through the draft with those kinds of high priced positions but we can use FA in the short term to get us through.

We do have to get better at evaluating talent though. JMO

Yeah because every 30 + year old sucks like Newman.

A name that hasn't received much attention, but he is almost certainly going to be a Free Agent is Asante Samuel.

He is too soft, we need to get more physical in the secondary in my opinion.

It seems the top of the corner class for this offseason is going to command too much money and strap us down to long term deals. Like Finnegan, Porter, Grimes, Carr and probably even Carlos Rogers. What does everyone think of signing a solid veteran to short term deal who can still play? These are all guys who we can get at a discount due to injury or age:

Marcus Trufant
Rashean Mathis
Terrell Thomas
Bryant McFadden
Jason Allen
Will Allen
Aaron Ross

Go with Ross, then draft Chase Minnifield in the second round...

Add Michael Griffin at safety, draft somebody like George Iloka from Boise Stated or Trumaine Johnson from Montana in the middle rounds, or Matt Daniels from Duke or Desmond Marrow from Toledo a bit later...

Your secondary is now starting to look a lot better for 2012... you've got Ross, Minnifield, Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick as your top 4 corners... you've got Griffin and Gerald Sensabaugh as you starting safeties, Iloka or one of the others as your 7th DB...

Sounds like a good start on a rebuild to me...

The whole coonection to needing a veteran C was lost, I guess.

The OL is YOUNG, and will get younger, epsecially at G, so balancing it out with a veteran at C makes sense.

At CB and S we have nothing but veternas, so making one CB be a rookie is not so bad to balance the whole secondary out with veternas and youth.

I'm all for a vet FA interior lineman. Also down for a FA CB. I see the latter as a necessity. We will likely draft two CBs as well.

Guys, my brother is a huge Titans fan and follows the team on a daily basis and he says that the talk in Nashville is that they are going to let Finnegan test the market.

Apparently CJ going south on them after getting $50 mill guaranteed on his new deal has left a sour taste in their mouth for any more big contracts.

Bottom line.............if we want Finnegan, he is going to be available.
