Hmm. This suggests to me that the 49'ers think they might lose Norv AND Singletary. I'd love Singletary here - I won't even get excited though b/c I think it is crazy.

Hold on now. No way. Norv would be bat**** to take a job with not one but two hot young replacements waiting.

He is an offensive coordinator for us. That is not a step up.

What San Diego might want to do, and what they realistically would do to a guy being offered a better job, are entirely different. It's a big stretch.

Sparano isnt our OCoordinator, It would have been a step up as well as more money probably

You can call it a stretch but Its not a stretch to believe a team would look out for their own best interests.

Heck like the other guy said Garrett was denied permission to talk to numerous teams before us

I would feel a little better if that were the case.

But I am still confused on the Singletary issue.

He is a LB coach and Assistant HC.

If we brought him here would it be considered an upgrade or lateral move if we made him DC and Assistant HC.

He is the closest we had to a OC by his titles.

Running Game coordinator and Assistant HC.

We actually had no OC per title on the team.

I am still trying to figure out why Nolan wont even interview Singletary for the DC position

Don't be ridiculous. We don't have an OC - clearly. But that's a step up in name only. He coordinates our offense.

No, it's not.

It's a stretch to think that they would hinder a guy's opportunity just because they have uncertainty. Teams don't do that. This whole idea is an enormous stretch. Nothing is decided yet. Even if it was, San Diego wouldn't know.

*We're* the ones that needs to talk to Manusky.

Even if Wade were the HC we'd still need a good DC. And of course he'd be a good candidate no mater who the HC is since he's been with Wade for 3 years.

Afterall, unlike offensive minded HC's who often calls their own plays, you dont often see a defensive minded HC calling defensive "plays" on a play by play basis.

Still a step up and likely raise we blocked him from taking

We also blocked him from going to NO last year before he had the pretty titles

Thats not a stretch at all it happens ALL the time. The team will look out for themselves first. They would know in a few days for certain what will happen. So why not wait the few days the San Fran job wont be filled this week

He has said that he knows what Singletary can do. But there is something else going on there.

I read a clarification of the league rules on assistant coach interviews earlier today - I think the jist was that if the guy is under contract you can keep him from interview -- except if it is for an HC position -- However, most teams are going to ask permission for any position. So the lateral or not issue doesn't matter in that regard.

I will admit that it is pretty strange.

However they do have Singletary listed as Assistant HC so I would take it they don't want him moving on to another team as DC so easily.

Maybe, and this is just speculation as I don't know, he feels Singletary needs another year.

Yes, you can. The only exception is if you are interviewing the coach for a head coaching position. For example, the Dolphins denied permission for at least two other teams to interview Garrett to be their OC until Dallas came knocking.

The lateral move rule was changed because teams kept using phony titles like "assistant head coach / outside linebackers" to get around the rule.
Was Garrett interviewing for OC positions in the NFL? I know he was offered OC positions in college.

Who knows...he was not allowed to interview with other teams by the Dolphins.

However it was my understanding that Norv wanted to hire Garrett (prior to this cowboys situation) so that would indicate he wanted Jason as QB Coach or some other position as norv was an OC.

Now I think I read the browns were interested in him as an OC but I could be wrong about that.

of course he might think Singletary sucks or he might worry that if he stumbles having Singletary at DC makes for an obvious replacement.

what really makes it weird is bringing in a young hot candidate like Manusky -- I can see having Campo there -- you know, someone you can just fire after a year - but you don't put an up and coming guy in that spot.

LB coach is his title. i dont think the league would allow teams to block a coach thats as low as lb coach to move to another team. just because a team calls him assistant coach.

i dont think thats a lateral move because his duties are basically coaching the lbers

I thought the Assistant HC tag was basically meaningless according to the new rule? I think you would have to disregard the AsstHC tag, and look at the coordinator position he holds, which I think is less than DC, so hiring him to be our DC would be a step up

I think, not sure
