Assistant coaches are assistant coaches...period. A LB coach is an assistant coach, just like an "assistant head coach" or offensive coordinator. Unless an assistant is interviewing for a head coach position, a team need not allow them permission to interview, period, end of story.

Teams deny their assistants opportunity to interview for non-HC positions all the time. San Diego is one of those teams who allows their assistants to interview for promotions, at the assistant level (e.g., LB coach to DC). Marty was quoted as saying so last week.
