The one thing that makes me happy is that I think Parnell has a much higher ceiling than Free at RT. Smith-Leary-Fred-Bern-Parnell with Free as the swing guard/tackle is an interesting prospect.

dude where is this parnell love coming from?

A lot of people were originally saying that Parnell had a really high ceiling and was simply raw from a lack of experience. The hope was that with the right coaching they could turn him into a significant player.

I've never been on the Parnell bandwagon myself, but if he can work out at tackle, by all means. I just think this front office has failed us on the offensive line front and should have made attempts to get another guard or tackle at some point in the draft or free agency. Reminds me of when we went after asomugha but ended up having to keep a gimpy newman for another year... with spectacular results :/

Um, really? You're ruing us missing out on Asomugha?

Check my posting over the summer -- I've been high on him for a while. I like him a lot more as a prospect than Free.

Yeah but Parnell isn't exactly a young puppy. He's 27 and has played on 3 teams, two stints with the Saints. I don't remember many success stories turning basketball players into football players. If he was going to "get it" it was now. His time was now to seize that RT position with Free coming off a horrific year but apparently from the reports I've read he hasn't looked good at all. Not sure how much of that is due to injuries.

Well, from what I understand, he didn't look good at the beginning because he tried to play through the hamstring injury. Now, after recovery, he's looking much better.

I thought his play was far superior to Free's last season. He had a lower pressure rate (~4%) and much higher run YPA (~5 yards per run). And though he is 27, he doesn't have a lot of "rust," so I could see him player into his mid-30s, which isn't uncommon for OTs.

@Risen Star @RS12

Do you guys know if next year's draft is deep at the guard position?

Way early but it doesn't look bad. Gabe Jackson looks like a high 2nd round pick at worst. If David Hankey enters the draft as a G prospect, he's probably the top player at the position. At least in August. You've got a whole season to shake things up.

Cyril Richardson from Baylor is my personal pet cat at that position right now. Dancing bear.

Last year I was laughed at when I said "just try Free at Guard".... If Parnell can be part of the top 5, who cares where they all play...

Im still laughing. We're going to get Romo killed.

Free doesn't have the strength or knee bend to play inside.

It's just a bad idea. Good luck to him though.

I can remember reading about practices with Aikman, where the ball never touched the ground during passing drills.

Plus, what a dreadful shame it is that this team is still addressing the offensive line.

Gabe Jackson is a beast.

I didn't even know he was a top prospect during a Mississippi state game and he stood out.

He really is. It seems like most guys have him in the 30's or 40's in their preseason prospect ranking. I have to think that's just because he's a G. He looks better to me than that.

If that tells you how bad our other guys are than it's not really funny. We tried to fix an entire OL by drafting ONE Center...Now your left with resorting to last years fixem up McGyver type solutions..

Parnell didn't play on 3 teams, he was on the practice squad. The Saints tried to make him a TE. All of his time with NO, Miami and NO again occurred within 1 year.

Parnell is stronger and quicker than Free. I've reviewed all of his snaps from 2012 on the Coaches Film. My basic summary of Parnell's play in 2012:

Rarely beaten physically. He was not getting beaten by speed to the outside and was not getting bull-rushed.

His negative plays were almost all due to mental/timing type issues. An example would be when the DLinemen would run a stunt. The OT and OG need perfect timing to execute this type of block. Generally, as the OT, he must quickly recognize the stunt and "take" the DT from the OG to allow the OG to get the DE that has looped around to the inside. There were a few of these plays that technically were Parnell's fault, but probably wouldn't have been a problem if the OG next to him was a quality veteran player.

The report that he didn't look good in training camp came from Broaddus and was based on 2 days of practice when he was trying to play through a hamstring injury. The trainers shut him down after that and he just returned about 1 week ago. Some current reports indicate that he still appears to be favoring the hamstring while walking.

I thought the whole idea was to keep the pocket clean in front of Romo... So we kick Doug Free inside?

This team is just rediculous sometimes. How on earth this is an issue after what we saw last year is beyond me.

I think 99% of Cowboyszone could've done a better job at getting better at the guard position than Jason and Jerry have done.
