And yet, in the first 5 games of the season that Springs missed, the Skins gave up an average of 236.4 yards per game passing, and 22.0 points per game...
In the other 11 games, they gave up 209.9 yards per game, and 19.0 points per game...
I dunno, the bottom line seems to be telling us that the Skins played better pass defense with him than without him...
If they sign anybody of note, it will be because they cut some folks... and after sending Ryan Clark and Walt Harris packing last year (and watching Harris go to the Pro Bowl with the Niners), and replacing them with megabust Adam Archuleta, perhaps the Skins should finally wise up, and realize that going out and buying all the "marquee" free agents you can possibly find every year hasn't worked for them...
In particular, you have to wonder about their ability to evaluate defensive backs...
As for being surprised about who the Skins will sign, with all those teams having all that cap room, they're likely to find themselves surprised at the bidding wars that will certainly come about for the best players... there will be numerous teams with a LOT of money to throw around... maybe the Skins can get to 10 mil under the cap, that will put them at about 25th in the league in cap room... the Boys are right around 21 mil after re-signing Gurode, and that only puts them around 18th in the NFL in cap room...
This year, ten mil won't buy what it would have in years past... example-- I'm already hearing that Kris Dielman and Eric Steinbach are looking for deals that average about 7 mil a year... that's more than Steve Hutchinson got last year, and neither one of them can carry Steve's jock...
Clements and Fletcher alone would almost certainly wipe out whatever cap room you guys could manage to manufacture-- IF you can get them to sign on... after years in Buffalo, they might want to go to a team with a real chance at going somewhere in the playoffs next year... or other teams might throw an obscene amount of money at one or both, effectively taking the Skins out of the picture...
