Skins Defensive Tribute Rumor

What will the Bills do in that case?

The Bills would have a hard time scoring if the defense played with seven.;)

If the Skins wanted to play with 10 men on the 1st play, and stuffed the Bills on that play... It would be awesome.

If the Bills scored, it would be idiotic.

If the Bills sent only 10 men of their own, that would be classy.

Let them do it. Let's see what type of class the Bills have.

Come on. going a little overboard aren't ya?

it would be one play and I imagine that if the Skins came out with 10, the bills would just run it right up the middle.

Ease up. You act like your life is riding on the game.
No, those who think this is a good idea are those going overboard.

How does handicapping your team honor Taylor? I'd think that winning the game would be a better tribute. If they start with 10, give up a big play, then wind up losing a close game, then Gibbs and Co look like fools.

If playing the game is secondary to honoring Taylor come Sunday, then the game shouldn't be played. The people paying $ to see it aren't paying to see a Sean Taylor memorial service.

All that will do is cause both teams to draw a flag. The rules state you need 11 on offense and 11 on defense. They will honor Sean Taylor with hard play, not drawing flags.

Yes but they would be offsetting if both teams have 10 players which would have no impact on the outcome of the game. That would be the right thing to do.

Were talking 1 play. 1 freaking play. Its a drop in the bucket. Nobody would blame gibbs because nobody should really expect the team to be in the right state of mind.

And I don't see how you can justify saying that the game shouldn't be played if they want to start with 10. You're sitting here griping about how the fans deserve better cause they are paying money but you would be more in favor of a cancelled game then the 1st play of the game being 11 vs. 10. How does that work?

If it was worked out before the game with Buffalo coaches, the skins could come out with 10 players, the Bills take the delay of game penalty which the skins decline, game starts right over 1st and 10

I really don't like teams messing with the integrity of the game. Once teams start making deals like that, it opens up the impression that other deals are possible.

That reminds me of the women's college BB game a few years ago when they allowed an injured player score the first points of the game to set some career scoring record on an uncontested layup then the other team got an uncontested layup.

Championships haven't been won or lost on one play? No team has ever made the playoffs based on the outcome of one game?

It makes a mockery of the game. If honoring Taylor is that important, the game should be canceled.

I took this from ES. I can honestly say that if they do this I will be brought to tears!!!

From Dan Shanoff:

There is rumor that the Commanders will open on defense against the Bills with only 10 players, as a tribute to Taylor. That seems like as nice and fitting a moment as an NFL team can create on the field.

Nice gesture

No game, championship or otherwise, has ever been lost by the first play from scrimmage.

I think if the Commanders want to open the game up "missing man" formation and play with 10 guys on the first play.. more power to them. I do not think that the bills are required to do anything different than they normally would. If they go deep on the first play, so be it.

I think it would be a great gesture.

Juron wouldn't throw deep on that play. He just wouldnt'.

A couple years ago, the USC kicker died in an accident.

The first game of the season, after USC scored the first touchdown, they lined up for hte extra point, with no kicker. The center never snapped the ball, they just took a penalty. It was a damn fine moment in sports. I'll never forget it. Classiest thing I"ve ever seen on a football field.

This would be similar.

People are getting way too touchy feely over one man's death. I don't remember this forum being so "sensitive" when Bill Parcells had to bury his brother in the afternoon and then coach the team that same night.

Good point.

Had we lost that game to the Eagles, as we appeared we were going to do, I am sure there would have been a ton of posts re his boobs, etc

I don't know, we lost the 1994 NFC Championship game basically because we threw an INT for a TD on the first play.

This gesture reminds me of "Missing Man" formation that I've seen few times when I was in the Navy.

In my Navy career, we've lost some people in the squadron and we honor and show respect by pilots flying "Missing Man" formation, where 4 or 5 jets flying side by side and point nose to the sky, while they are climbing the altitude, one pilot drops off, I get choked up watching these manuvers.

Very similar idea, I think.

I feel terrible that ST was killed. I pray for his family's comfort in this difficult time.
I feel compassion for those that knew him.
I am proud of this board for our response, and love the ST picture and burgundy background as a tribute to him.

I honor his memory with my SigLine.

As far as only starting 10 on defense, that's cool if they choose to do so.

But I haven't turned into a Commanders fan all of a sudden.
I still hope they lose their game.

I just do. Maybe I am in the minority, but that is how I feel.

But remember, we're talking Joe Gibbs here. He would make the deal and then screw over the Bills and accept the penalty.

A TD counts the same in the 1st qtr as it does in the 4th.

Why not have the whole defense take a knee and let the Bills score an easy TD...what a tribute that would be...absurd!!!

Play the game! That's what any deceased football player would tell his teammates to do if he were able to.

People are getting way too touchy feely over one man's death. I don't remember this forum being so "sensitive" when Bill Parcells had to bury his brother in the afternoon and then coach the team that same night.

What's going on in here...you guys taking estrogen pills?

:hammer:

excellent post...I agree COMPLETELY!

terrible thing, the man dying, but come on. Stuff like this happens everyday people, if ya'll cared a little more about it when it was a no name (all be it probably a better and more innocent person) that got killed this would be a little more understanding...but all this shedding tears and oh thats so moving is way over the top.

I can see them only listing 10 starters.

Starting 10 guys is absurd. They still have an obligation to try to win the game.

maybe the point is to try and win at "life" - not "the game".

like others have said, if they do it for the 1st play on D, i would hope the bills would have enough class to make it a run play or something else to not take advantage of someone when they're only paying respect to someone lost so tragically.
