Smart thing is to take advantage of depth at certain positions, but

In the Taco Charlton draft, there was a deep corner class but shallow DE class. The Cowboys decided to take a 2nd rd player at the shallow position over a 1st rd corner in King due to depth at the position. As we know, they took the wrong pass rusher, but did end up with Awuzie, Lewis in that class.

They can use a similar strategy this year, but must be careful not pass on a better player in the process.
Good points. The Cowboys actually used this strategy more than once but history has always shown the Cowboys do better when they take BPA. I personally think it’s Jeanty or bust for the Cowboys in this draft. I wonder who else they might have their eye on if he is not there. I want the Cowboys to trade down and get at least two extra early round picks. I would be fishing for a team in the 20s that would be willing to give up their first, second, and third to move up to 12. The strength of this draft is the second and third round depth.

Process is about to start, we should find out who they are showing interest with.

The draft show seems to be interesting this year. Take a look at it. Voch and Broaddus disagree big time with Nick and the host on players. Harris sounds like he is a board member on Cowboys zone. He said if the Cowboys are left with Jeanty on the board he would parachute out of the pick. Broaddus jumped on him and said ok explain your plan. Harris talked about drafting the Oregon running back in the third round. They countered him by saying how do you know the back you want will fall that far. Good stuff…….

I wanted Watt myself, didn't like the corner, but their strategy was to take the lower player on their board due to the depth at the position. King had a higher grade on their board then both Taco/Watt. Watt clearly became the best player of the three. However, my point is, you shouldn't take a lesser player cause the depth is stronger at another position.
One also has to wonder about the evaluation process that could have a guy like Taco and TJ rated so closely together. It wasn't even close from day 1.

Broaddus's counter makes no sense. The fact is that you have a much better chance of landing a capable rb in round 3 than a CB or DE or LT. You should never use a first round pick on a rb.

He has. Working with Jeff years ago on the draft was able to get him into meetings with certain people. Him and Broaddus together has been really good. Let’s see how he is with Bobby and company.

Been watching him and Broaddus. I may have some different viewpoints at times, but is a really good draft info podcast

The strategy was great that year we just didn’t hit on Taco. He was a good prospect just a bust.

If someone like Burden is available at 12 Is take him knowing you can likely get a stud DT and RB later in the draft.

If a player is was ahead of Burden just take that dude though.

My point of this discussion, be mindful of the depth, but don’t just take a lesser player cause of the lack of depth at position

Agree. I’d lean towards the position with less depth if the tags are close enough but not take someone over a RB / DT if the other player is graded 7/8ish slots higher.

On a team with so many gaping holes, blowing the 12th pick on one of the easiest positions to find in the NFL makes zero sense. We need CB, DE, DT, LB, and WR. RB is a luxury pick. We are picking 12th not 26th. We won't have to compromise on any of these positions as we did with Guyton last year being the 8th OT off the board. We should be able to land one of the top 2 prospects at most positions.

You never pass on an elite prospect for a lesser player at a more premium position. In the First rd especially you want to take the player who has the less warts as you cannot afford to miss

I'll take the #2 DE or CB over the #1 RB any day of the week.

They are "so called" professionals and they are a lot of the time. They are just guessing same as any of us.
That's why I laugh when someone says "so you think you know better than the pro's". If they were that good there wouldn't be any draft busts & no one would trade picks in the first couple rounds cause they would all be drafting from the same board.

If anything they probably suffer from too much information & the voices around them that are also supposed to be experts. Leads to group think.

Taco had a really impressive bowl game performance as I recall. People drooled over the attributes & recency bias rather than look at the body of work.

Don't disagree, but this is more about their strategy then the player. They overdrafted to take a DE over a 1st rd CB.
We are in a better position this year. We won't have to reach because we are picking in the back half.

let me remind you, there maybe just 10 first rd grades in this draft with very few blue chip prospects, where Jeanty is one of them. I don’t want to take another 1st rd back, but I am not passing on a star for a solid player

hopefully they learned from that draft.
personally...i've not really had an issue with these drafts since mccarthy has been here...specificly rd1.
•ceedee lamb
•micah parsons
•tyler smith
•mazi smith
•tyler guyton
the first 2 were gifts from heaven.
i loved both ol when we picked.
in the mazi spot,i wanted notre dame te michael mayer.
i never gave mazi a thought because jerry hadn't taken a dt in rd1 since maryland.
i was just happy they finally noticed the dt spot.
really good player.
its been slower with him than anyone thought...but he has played better lately...making improvement.
i think they'll nail this pick.
at this spot they usually do.
