Johnny Rocket's food like so many Chains is bad, i.e., Hooters, TGIF, Hard Rock Cafe, House of Blues, Plant Hollywood. Does anyone remember the Fashion Cafe and the All Star cafe?.:ralph:

Actually the greatest musician out the 50s IMO has to be Chet Atkins. Simply amazing guitar work.

Skill, yes. Otherwise, not so much.

Does no one realize what a profound influence Buddy Holly was on all that came after him such as The Beatles and Rolling Stones?

He is the reason they got into music.

Yup. Definitely one of the best. That gallopin' guitar was pretty bad arse. A better musician than Elvis, but not half the entertainer.

Yes. Some people do realize. I'm assuming you realize the influence Elvis had on Buddy Holley?

I give Snyder credit... he's a good businessman. You may not like his methods or his team but he seems to know how to make money.

They were contemporaries for the most part and friends, Chuck Berry begot Presley.

I completely agree with your first statement here (and the same could be said for nearly every musical era), but as far as the Beatles being the single largest modern rock influence, I'm not buying it. Not because I dont' think they were hugely influetial, but that I have a hard time giving them so much credit when guys like Elvis and Chuck Berry paved the way for them in the 50's. There were others before Elvis that did the same for him. Progression can not be taken lightly. It just seems like such a Rolling Stone cookie cutter answer to a very complex question.

BTW, good band list in the other post. I've got a few more bands to add to that list.

The Beatles changed some aspects of the music industry in monumental ways. Prior to them, lots of top bands worked with other songwriter's material. After them, everyone was expected to write as well as perform.

And the line of succession doesn't mean they weren't that important. In jazz, Louis Armstrong is not less important because the title of 'Trumpet King' moved on to Dizzy Gillespie or Miles Davis.....

They were contemporaries and friends, yes. ...but for the most part, it was Elvis leading the way. Holley's musical form was bluegrass until he saw Elvis play. Three months later he was playing rock n' roll on the same tour as Elvis.

Who begot Berry?

That's precisely my original point...its really far too complicated a question to have the good ol' "The Beatles are #1" answer thrown around as often as it is. Its all about progression and influence rather than who's influential and who's more influential.

Not only his playing but how many artists he discovered. It is an amazing list, that includes Elvis.

Bands wrote their own material before the Beatles too. Bands to this day continue to work with other artists material, moreso in many ways. I fail to see your point here.

I never said that the line of progression suggested the order of importance. The fact is, there have been monumental changes in music in many different periods within the last century. Some easily more recognizable than others, but that doesn't make them more important. I just don't like the way every hippie or trustafundian throws out the Beatles every time this question comes up...unthinkingly regurgitating some crappy article they read in High Times. As a music fan, I find it irritating. Then again, that's just my opinion, and they are intitled to theirs, however uneducated it may or may not be.

Didn't it also include Charlie Pride and Waylon Jennings? IIRC it did.

Yes, and even more beyond those. I saw a list one time and it was mind blowing.

Danny Snyder still runs his team like its a Fantasy Football franchise. 'Oooh, I recognize that name! Sign him for a gazillion bucks!' Thank goodness.

His smartest move ever was getting out of the hi-tech business in 1999 instead of 2001.
