Agree - I didn't say it wasn't important -- only that it sucked and referring primarily to the annoying music you hear in Johnny Rockets.

:p: While I am a lard, I'm not nearly as big as that guy- his name is fATAS (pronounced fate-us)- the f is lower case because he's a bit self-conscious about his weight.

FYI sir I wasn't implying that was you in the pic...

This is all true...

As far as Elvis goes, he was quite the snappy dresser.

Albert Einstein didn't create the atomic bomb, but he gets some credit.

Hop hop still exists, but it doesn't resemble the 80s version at all. It may be closer to the 80s version than all other music is to 50s music, but all things being equal that just makes sense -- what with the passage of over half a century and all.

Don't you mean "Norman Einstein"?

Everyone wants to dog the 80s due to Poison and the Bangles but the punk scene of that era was unrivaled as was acts lke RunDMC and Grandmaster Flash.

The Cars, Pink Floyd the Wall, Tom Petty, Nirvana, The Cure, Ministry, EPMD, Metallica, Black Sabbath, The Dead Milkmen, The Descendants, Faith No More, NWA, Neil Young, Skinny Puppy, The Pixies, The Clash, Stevie Ray Vaughn, U2, Van Halen and the list goes on and on. All from the 80s.

None of whom likely even exist if not for the Rock n Roll era of the 50's. Musical influences. Just food for thought.

But oh, the sexual repression of the 50's.

Im not arguing that brah. Im just saying because MTV hyped some garbage doesnt mean that the entire era wasnt remotely that.

There is no question that the 50s were a starting point The Beatles are named after Buddy Holly's band after all but if you want to look at the single largest influence on modern rock look no farther than the Beatles.

yep, hair-rock bands definitely ruined the perception of '80s music

Good post.

Did not know that about the Crickets being the inspiration for The Beatles.

Oh and i def forgot to put Metallica on that list as well.

I LOVE the 80's.

So much, that at work when I am working on projects, I go with titles of songs from that era to label different stages.

"Well Mr. CEO, current I'm working on phase "Girls, Girls, Girls", but once we get through the research, we can move on to phase "Kyria"!"

Yeah, that's how the Beatles got there name, from the Crickets. You already know this, but, they orginally went with the bug name Beetles, then John had a "revelation" and changed it to Beatles, with the "Beat" thing instead of the "Beet" thing...

I completely agree with your first statement here (and the same could be said for nearly every musical era), but as far as the Beatles being the single largest modern rock influence, I'm not buying it. Not because I dont' think they were hugely influetial, but that I have a hard time giving them so much credit when guys like Elvis and Chuck Berry paved the way for them in the 50's. There were others before Elvis that did the same for him. Progression can not be taken lightly. It just seems like such a Rolling Stone cookie cutter answer to a very complex question.

BTW, good band list in the other post. I've got a few more bands to add to that list.
