So are we gonna cut our 4th rounder now?

Jerry and Jeff Ireland just high-fived

OK, I don't know that for sure, but it's a pretty good guess. Those guys were questioned about burning a fourth-rounder on a WR project with a serious foot injury.
So far, so good for Isaiah Stanback in his preseason debut. Got good separation on that route and made a nice catch on a ball that he had to reach for. He had two catches for 30 yards on the drive.

I didn't see the game, but yahoo sports game review had Austin making several mistakes. I also didn't notice any stats of him returning kicks, which has been his niche. Any chance that he doesn't make the roster?

he kept dropping balls and slipped on his route which led to a pick. he was pretty bad out there.

There is always the chance Austin gets cut` WR is a tough place to break into the NFL if you`re on the Boys` I wouldn`t go to Dallas as a rookie FA WR` Stanback has been a lock for the roster vs IR` I`d have a sleepless nite were I Austin` But he has time.

He could make the Titians roster easy as a wr not that it matters with Vince only hitting on :blind:5/17 passes

i'll answer your question once more - yes, he plays WR now. : )

The guy's pitiful, isn't he?? :D

And as long as we're braggin' on newbies, do the Cowboys now have two good kickers, or what?? With all the things that went right in that first half, I most enjoyed Folk nailing that 52 yarder there at the end of the first half...

This poses a dilemma, Grammatica looks better than he did last year, and he was perfectly acceptable then... his kickoffs look like he went and got a leg transplant in the offseason... but I sure do like the kid, and am dubious that the Boys could get him through waivers and onto the practice squad; if they cut him, some team in need of a kicker is gonna jump all over him...

I see us doing what the Pats did to Grammatica last year, pass him over for the younger guy, even though Grammatica was just as good in the offseason

Stanback made the team tonight IMO. He showed the raw ability to be a legitimate WR in a year or two and has the speed to contribute on ST. His cause was not hurt by the fact that Austin had a pretty bad game tonight. I really thought that we would keep 6 WR's this year (the top three, Hurd seems to be in solid at #4, Austin and Stanback) but unless Austin picks it up he might be on the outside looking in.

Tell that to the DB last night who was frozen when he broke for the ball on his TD.

;)

Once again a silly agenda was refuted. When will these guys learn JPM, when will they learn?

austin was bad last night. He had a lousy game. the romo interception was his fault. It looked like he didnt make a good break on the route or slipped and then was real lazy just nonchalantly going for the ball.....dre bly just stepped in front. Had austing made an effort and shielded bly its incomplete at worst.

Then a few plays later austin ran a deep sideline route perfectly and beat bly and romo hit him in the hands and he dropped it. Just dropped it.

then he ran a post route and beat, i cant remember the cb it was either foxworth or bly and he stopped his route. He was open and the throw was there and it looked like he stopped his route or didnt run it deep enough.

he really struggled last night. Its ok though, it was a good learning experience for him.

Stanback...show us what you can do.

he did. now pay attention, be a man, and own up to the FACT that he's a WR for us and seems like, so far, that the man can play.

all you gotta do vs. wallow in stupidity.

Isaiah Stanback caught two passes for 30 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown.

IRVING, Texas - What do you get when you take a guy with no NFL experience and play him at receiver in an NFL game? Oh, and he didn't play receiver in college. And what's more, he's been out with injuries for the past 10 months.

If that guy is Cowboys fourth-round draft pick Isaiah Stanback, apparently you get two catches for 30 yards and a touchdown in two quarters of play.

Stanback, who missed both mini-camps and every OTA practice session recovering from last November's Lisfranc foot surgery, then the entirety of training camp in San Antonio with shin splints, made his NFL debut Saturday night here at Texas Stadium against the Broncos.

After only one week of practice at the position, Stanback was the Cowboys' third-most productive receiver in terms of total yards, and the only one to get into the end zone. And he's clearly a quick learner, as the route he ran on the 15-yard touchdown reception from Brad Johnson actually was one he botched in practice earlier in the week.

"I took too long on it," Stanback said. "I didn't come out right, so when I got up there that time, I remembered it. OK, it's that same look. I'm going to run it right this time, and Brad put a good ball in there."

And a good ball should be easy to recognize, since Stanback played quarterback at Washington. But now he's looking at it from a different viewpoint.

Although Stanback's quarterback experience has helped him recognize holes in coverages, he's had to change his viewpoint from the entire field to one route.

"As a receiver, you've got to look from the outside in," Stanback said. "It's a different point of view and I'm getting used to looking at it that way."

Stanback still has a lot of physical adjustments ahead of him as well. He's had to learn new techniques. He did play receiver his freshman year at Washington, but said he really only had to know two routes.

So he's had to start from square one and play catch-up. In his first week of practice, his main concentration was on proper stance.

"I feel like I'm light years behind," Stanback said. "Just the aspect that everyone who's playing receiver right now has played receiver before, and I really haven't."

But if Saturday night's performance is any indication, he'll be just fine. The Cowboys drafted him knowing that his transition wouldn't be immediate, and have full confidence that he can contribute. It's just a question of getting acclimated.

"He has the speed," said starting receiver Terrell Owens, who should know talent when he sees it. "He just has to get familiar with the offense and get his timing down. Other than that he has the tools."

The Cowboys hope that Stanback's athleticism can be put to use on either punt or kickoff returns, though he didn't get much chance to strut his stuff there Saturday. He was forced to down the ball in the end zone on the only kickoff that came his way.

"I didn't want to take a knee," Stanback said of the play. "I was ready as a returner, but that's what the other returner [Jerheme Urban] is there for. If he says you're supposed to stay in, you've got to stay in, so I had to respect that."

Stanback should have plenty more chances to showcase his talent, though, because the Cowboys didn't wait this long just to bury him on the depth chart.

Injury Update
A couple of Cowboys starters sat out the game against the Broncos with recent injuries: Cornerback Terence Newman and fullback Oliver Hoyte.
Newman was held out for precautionary reasons with a bruised heel, according to head coach Wade Phillips. Hoyte remained sidelined after suffering a stinger in his shoulder earlier in the week. Cornerback Aaron Glenn and fullback Lousaka Polite started in their places.
