So having digested the trade for 24 hours

So this year is over. The question is what is better for the Cowboys going forward: and 2nd, a 1st, and 25million+ a year for 2-3 years or Williams for 2-3 years?

If you believe the Cowboys can muster 10+ wins next year, I can see the argument for QW. I just don't see it. My understanding is our cap for next year is now filled. This means there's no money to sign a bunch of new FAs.

I personally think I'd rather have the picks.

I wonder how everyone who likes this trade is going to feel next year when Jerry doesn’t resign Williams early and we are in the Parson’s situation again in 2027.
As Jerry always says, his best moves are at the deadline.

Everyone has been clamoring for DT's for a long time. That's been the weak spot on the D-line. Now, everyone will start clamoring for DE's, or LB's, or secondary. Stopping the run is about the whole package. This problem is most definitely not solved.

This was a panic move by the GM. Those draft picks could have been solid players for years to come. On cheap rookie contracts too. It's a defeatist attitude to think Dallas should trade away the picks because they don't know how to use them.
So you're saying it was a really bad idea to get a 27 yr old 3 time Pro Bowl stud Defensive Tackle? Top 2-3 in the entire league? Yeah, I'd much rather gamble on some 23 yr old kid from college who could easily bust

However, we would then need to go get another DT. I would prefer to keep Clark at $12 to $15M.

Sure, but you have to weigh that against the millions in dead cap you are pushing out to keep him. We are adding cap hit with Williams to go along with even him at 12. Just not sure the cost is worth it but no doubt you can’t have too much talent

Williams is a very good DT. We have not had a DT of his caliber in quite a bit of time. Now with Clark and Odi, the Cowboys have a pretty good DT rotation, something many of us have been clamoring for since who knows when.

The cost seems a bit high but it was always going to cost you a premium to get a top notch DT. So while I bristle at the cost, I can at least understand it.

Where I struggle is that this just seems more of the kind of haphazard roster building we see constantly from Jerry. How did he go from telling us in August he really liked our defensive talent assembled and that they were happy with what they added at DT to in a span of two months, making two major trades to fill a clear hole that any sane person knew was a problem when they broke camp. And when he finally realizes what most of us already saw, he's already dug himself a big hole that will be tough to get out from this year. In all reality, as much as I like Williams, we should be probably looking to the future and parlaying these top picks into a rebuild. We made a major trade as if we were a legit contender. We are not. This smells of Jerry overvaluing what he built yet again.

So I guess this is a longwinded way of saying, I still don't how I feel about the trade. LOL.
Bingo. This is management by crisis not a plan.

We have 2 day 1 picks, no day 2 picks, and 2 day 3 picks..

5 draft picks total isn't much to work with.
It’s not but you can trade back and add picks but honestly I’d take quality over quantity. I’d also be trying to move mire guys after the season to add picks. Nine will bring anything huge but Steele, Diggs and and maybe another I’d move on from. Replacing Steele isn’t hard, he’s just nit that good. Diggs cost money to move on from but id do it.

Here is the story so far - Cowboys were headed into the season with a below average defensive line a generational player that would command double teams in Parsons and a promising rookie in EzE. Week before season started Jerry trades Parsons and now the defense that is run on it's ability to generate pressure is wrecked. After watching the team get destroyed by an average Chicago team, a pathetic Carolina team and a pretty good Denver team - Jerry goes into hat on fire mode and attempts to fix it. Enter Williams after trading away picks and Mazi Smith to the Jets. Will this fix some of the problems created by Jerry on defense? Yes. Will this defense still get shredded by good teams? Also yes.

I think Williams is the best DT Dallas has had since Randy White. Glover and Ratliff were good, but I think Williams is better than either of those guys. :eon Lett was good but a little inconsistent.

Williams is going to demand double teams leaving the DEs and other DTs one on one. The LBs should have more room to get to their gaps. If Williams is lined up next to Clark, it is going to be rough on offensive lines.

The best part is Williams pushes the pocket and take away the middle for the QB to step up. The Edges are going to be more effective rushing the passer.

Williams is not going to fix the defense because the secondary can't cover anyone, but he will help a little with the run defense and passing game.

Wilson is going to help too. He is way better playing pass defense than Murray or James and he is also more instinctive than both of them.

I don't like what we gave up but I cannot deny these two players are upgrades.

Well said.

Wilson is being completely underrated here. Weird, because he's a very solid instinctual LB, who should help get James and Lafu lined up.

Possibly. At least it's a start!!!!!

A ton depends on Revel and Carson coming back. We miss Lewis very badly, wish we'd have paid him instead of Bland.

They tried to trade for Quinnen in the summer they wouldn’t do it.

Williams is what the Cowboys thought Leon Lett was going to become. And may have if not for the..err... mental breakdowns.

2nd round Q. WIlliams
3rd round George Pickens
7th round Logan Wilson
Should have done this 2 years ago instead of waste their time on the Mazi-Schoo draft classes, when they were just a player or two away from going further in Playoffs. Freaking Jerry, always late to the GM party. Now that they stink again, it's going to hurt.
