Interesting read. I saw this quote from Bob Lilly: If I were on the weak side, I’d be head-up with the guard, right on the line of scrimmage, whereas the tackle on the other side would be three feet back. George Andrie would be right over the tackle and instead of being on his outside shoulder, he’d be head-up, three feet back. He would be keying my guard. I also keyed my guard.

Bob states that he would be face up to a guard. That is a 1 or a 3 technique depending on what side his gap was. I say this because Randy White replaced Bob as DT after his 2 years at LB. So Randy White didn't play face to face to a center as a nose guard would have. He played face to face with the guards like a 1 or a 2 or a 3 tech DT would.

And there have been some Sapp types available. However, for some very odd reason, we refuse to look at shorter players. Sapp was 6-2/300, and was a leverage nightmare. We don't look at Mike Daniels, Grady Jarrett, Javon Hargrave, guys like that who get under the OL's pads and are just so hard to block.

BTW, those are 3 I had my eye on predraft. They all went mid rounds, easily taken. We took Malik over Hargrave, who is looking beastly for PITT at 6-1/315. Jarrett and Daniels were 4th/5th rounders.

We want all our DL's to be like 6-5. So they can block passes I guess. Hey, I like that ability also in my DL's but not if they're getting owned at the LOS.

Mike Daniels, Jurrell Casey, Javon Hargrave, all Sapp types. I'm not saying they're as good as Sapp, though Daniels is dang close, but those are the interior disruptive guys we need. But, we don't look at them. Need a change in philosophy.

Yep. Leverage is key. The one short, stout 1T they have had was Terrell McClain and when he was healthy, our run defense was significantly better and suddenly Lee was not getting nicked up quite so much.
He had the ability to hold up against double teams without giving up any ground. Pushing the pocket as well. They need to stop trying to play these 3T types there.

I don't get it, get a 315lb guy to stop the run on 1-2 down and then that means you can T off on 3rd down. Are those guys that hard to find?

It's like they don't see how it actually helps the pass rush when you can stuff the run. Third and 10 you can focus on getting up field and after the QB. Third and short? If the offense doesn't run the ball they are more likely to throw a quick pass nullifying the rush.

I was a Grady Jarrett fan coming out too.

And honestly thought Collins could be our version of Sap after his stellar 2016. His rookie numbers were actually slightly better than Sapp's. Still not sure what happened with him, even before his foot injury.

They keep playing him at the 1tech. He simply does not anchor well enough to play the nose. His first season, he had TMac beside him, a quality 1 tech. Kept the doubles away.

I like this kid Vea. He looks like Maui from Moana(I have a 7 and 2 year old). Seriously though, like many others I have been screaming for them to put more resources into the DL especially the 1T for a long time. I would be ecstatic if they drafted Vea.
