Some insight on 1tech

I have wanted to see Dontari Poe on this team since we traded up for Claiborne . I think he would have fixed a lot of problems then and I think he is the missing piece now . We need to try and get him in FA . He is a one of a kind athlete that would make the whole defense better.

"I was shocked when Vea decided to return to Washington. He likely would've been a top-20 pick in the 2017 draft. He's a better version of Dontari Poe." -- Daniel Jeremiah

I'm among the people who want the Cowboys to go after a player like Poe for their 1-technique. Therefore, I'd have no problem if they drafted Vea. They'd get a younger player at much cheaper rate for a longer period.

But dare we hope that they'd pull the trigger and finally make the investment?

They value position flex so much that they don't get anyone who can do anything very well. They keep looking for a Sapp who is smaller but can do it all. There hasn't been another Sapp for 10 plus years, but if there was one they would expect to get him at 19. It's pretty bizarre to think that way but we are sticking to the plan.

And there have been some Sapp types available. However, for some very odd reason, we refuse to look at shorter players. Sapp was 6-2/300, and was a leverage nightmare. We don't look at Mike Daniels, Grady Jarrett, Javon Hargrave, guys like that who get under the OL's pads and are just so hard to block.

BTW, those are 3 I had my eye on predraft. They all went mid rounds, easily taken. We took Malik over Hargrave, who is looking beastly for PITT at 6-1/315. Jarrett and Daniels were 4th/5th rounders.

We want all our DL's to be like 6-5. So they can block passes I guess. Hey, I like that ability also in my DL's but not if they're getting owned at the LOS.

Mike Daniels, Jurrell Casey, Javon Hargrave, all Sapp types. I'm not saying they're as good as Sapp, though Daniels is dang close, but those are the interior disruptive guys we need. But, we don't look at them. Need a change in philosophy.

I was a Grady Jarrett fan coming out too.
:(
And honestly thought Collins could be our version of Sap after his stellar 2016. His rookie numbers were actually slightly better than Sapp's. Still not sure what happened with him, even before his foot injury.

The biggest issue is 1T plays about 30% of the snaps here.
So you don't want a guy who can only play 1T unless he is a specialist that makes little money and/or costs you a late pick. .
Dallas grabbed Irving off a PS and now you guys love him so please stop friggin crying about DTs...
It literally makes you all sound stupid.
The team has been a top 10 rush defense both of the last two seasons with scribble at 1T.

I wish they would we need a huge athletic disrupter in the middle . It makes everyones job easier and I believe would take some load off Sean Lee and help keep him healthy as we have seen with him out we cant stop anyone

I agree. And I think that the right guy could help take this line, and hopefully the entire defense, from being "good" to being "elite".

:hammer:frustrating......

What happened to Collins and then to Irving, when these smaller guys started having to play the 1T? Injury. It is exactly why David Irving needs to play outside on most plays and only come inside when needed. He is disruptive, but in my opinion will not be able to stand up to the inside. I still don't understand why Marinelli thinks that guys giving up 20-50lbs can anchor. Get light quick LB's and light quick DL and wonder why Big guys run it down their throats.

Collins was terrible at the 1 tech last year. He's out of position. We even played Irving there some, dummer n' dirt.
Irving got destroyed on the inside trap play against PHI...... he can play DT on pass plays but is a liability against he run

My ideal DL next year

DLaw.............DIrving.........Poe...........Taco
TCrawford.....MCollins.......Price.......RGregory
Tapper...........DJones..........Ash..........Mayowa

Yikes... Cowboys aren't carrying 12 DL.

That's why they value position flex. 10 is about the max.
1 or 2 on PS.

Base: DLaw--Irving--Collins--Crawford
Sub: Taco--Datone--Price/Ash--Tapper
Nickel: DLaw--Irving--Crawford--Gregory

Obviously that's 10 with the longshot of Gregory so you could keep Mayowa or draft a guy.
But the DL last year wasn't really an issue.
*You draft there because you always draft there but a big free agent there is VERY unlikely.

Unless you lose Irving for a draft pick plus his cap space.
Or crazily lose DLaw.

Just showing the depth we already have...... all I did was add Poe......not even any draft picks

let the bottom rows fight it out...... but we did go light on DL and OL last year..... we had 15 RB/TE/WR

I’m cornfused. Collins played 3-Tech last year and got 5 sacks. This year they moved him to 1-Tech and his production dropped plus he played injured..

What’s he talking about?

Exactly. I would like this if I could (new guy). Sometimes I wonder what BB is talking about. Collins slipped as a 1Tech.

He overrates how good the DL is anyway.

Couldn't agree more we keep trying to work around this problem and it keeps rearing its ugly head on us . I all for drafting a guy if there is one out there but if not we have to figure out how pay Poe and fix the middle of this line. I feel it would have a similar effect to the talent Tyron brings to the Oline

Just heard Broaddas on the Fan. He said Collins played well his rookie year at the 1T and then played well again this year once he went back to the 1T. Thinks they will look for more of a 3T than 1T. Mentioned that Hurst from Michigan is a possibility.
Hurst will be a good one.

Does it now? Well, the bolded doesn't exactly make you seem like the brightest tack in the tack room!!!!!!

A good 1 tech, not just some stiff, would play about 65-75% of snaps. And if you build your team correctly, none of your DL will play more than that. Gotta keep those guys fresh for the 4th. We ruined Ware's career by playing him like 98% of the snaps.

TMac was a quality 1 tech.

What you see from lack of a 1 tech is inconsistencies. That's why you'll see us stop the run sometimes, but not others, and why you'll see a great pass rush from us for a while, but then it disappears. If you have a guy in the middle who requires multiple blockers, but doesn't give ground, suddenly everyone around him becomes better. Building a DL is not about one guy, it's about having a deep, talented rotation that is built correctly. As long as we're weak up the middle, it will not be built correctly. If we truly don't want that guy because of our scheme, then we need to change our scheme.

You really shouldn't call people stupid because you don't agree w/ them.

Most realize this but it seems like a few posters don't. The 1Tech, also called the Shade, lines up on the outside "shade" of the center so by the very nature of this position is going to get the center and guard blocking him. You line up the DT in a "1 Tech" to pressure or stress the center, who has the obvious disadvantage of having to snap the ball and then fire off to his block. The position is going to take its toll on anyone who plays it. The Cowboys have been trying to get away with the quick, one-gap penetrating (basically a 3-Tech), type player. Which can be super advantageous against the pass but puts you at a disadvantage against the run.

Maliek can play 1Tech but 3Tech better suits him. Then on pass downs, you can play a two 3-Tech type front.

Another advantage of the big, bodied 1Tech is that helps keep O-Linemen but from getting 2nd level and engulfing LB's. This would be good for us for two reasons IMO. One, it keeps the valuable but oft-injured Sean Lee from taking on guys that outweigh him by 60 lbs. Two, Jaylon Smith is dynamite when he sees the play. He had some struggles diagnosing it right away and allowed the blocking to get to him early. When Baltimore won it's first Super Bowl, they used two huge DT's (Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa) to clog up the middle and freed up Ray Lewis to control and/or penetrate gaps.

They also had an amazing centerfielder at Free Safety in Ed Reed, another position that the Cowboys persist on going against the grain on.

But here is the rub KSK, they Don't. None of them bother to raise their hands while rushing the passer except Irving. He does actually bat some balls down every year and the rest seem unable to raise their arms at all. One would think the coaches would make it a point to do this!!!
