Some insight on 1tech

Most realize this but it seems like a few posters don't. The 1Tech, also called the Shade, lines up on the outside "shade" of the center so by the very nature of this position is going to get the center and guard blocking him. You line up the DT in a "1 Tech" to pressure or stress the center, who has the obvious disadvantage of having to snap the ball and then fire off to his block. The position is going to take its toll on anyone who plays it. The Cowboys have been trying to get away with the quick, one-gap penetrating (basically a 3-Tech), type player. Which can be super advantageous against the pass but puts you at a disadvantage against the run.

Maliek can play 1Tech but 3Tech better suits him. Then on pass downs, you can play a two 3-Tech type front.

Another advantage of the big, bodied 1Tech is that helps keep O-Linemen but from getting 2nd level and engulfing LB's. This would be good for us for two reasons IMO. One, it keeps the valuable but oft-injured Sean Lee from taking on guys that outweigh him by 60 lbs. Two, Jaylon Smith is dynamite when he sees the play. He had some struggles diagnosing it right away and allowed the blocking to get to him early. When Baltimore won it's first Super Bowl, they used two huge DT's (Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa) to clog up the middle and freed up Ray Lewis to control and/or penetrate gaps.

They also had an amazing centerfielder at Free Safety in Ed Reed, another position that the Cowboys persist on going against the grain on.
Isn't this image of Seattle a 3-4 front? A 3-4 utilizes a nose guard or a 0 technique and then 2 outside 3 techs followed by 4 LBers. The example of the Ravens having 2 HUGE DT's is what I understand as a 4-3. 2 DT, 2 DE with 3 LBers.

A lot of folks talk about Marinelli never being given talent to work with, but frankly he signs off on these guys. The 1T issue is a Marinelli issue. I am certain if he ask for a 1T in the higher rounds they give it to him. The most important section of the D is the line. You don't start upgrading other positions till that part is up to snuff. Their have been multiple opportunities to upgrade and Marinelli has not.

Example of what I mean about Marinelli/Cowboys and opportunities missed. In 2014 the rebuilding of the DLINE started. The cowboys got DLAW, good start. However 2015 set the cowboys back and they're still paying.
2015 draft selection Byron Jones
BAD PICK. Not because he is not talented but simply because NICK HAYDEN was your starting 1T. Replacing him was a priority to getting the DLINE right. Eddie Goldman, Jordan Phillips had to be the picks.

2016 Jaylon Smith BAD PICK, not because he is not talented but simply because position in front still wasn't addressed. Jarran Reed or A'shawn Robinson had to be the picks.

On top of that, now since you have a legitimate oversized space eating, run stuffing NT you can allow Tyrone Crawford to simply penetrate at that 3T spot and not try to find a spot for him trying to justify that contract.

Just showing the depth we already have...... all I did was add Poe......not even any draft picks

let the bottom rows fight it out...... but we did go light on DL and OL last year..... we had 15 RB/TE/WR
Depth and DL overall is much much better than people realize.
Then again last year everyone wanted a pass rusher....
And we drafted one in the 1st round but it wasn't their guy so they cried anyway.

Marinelli knows what he wants and he's gotten it.
The Dallas rush defense the past two years have finished 1st and 8th.
Arguing they needed to spend an R1 on a 1T is complete nonsense.

The other named guy Marinelli passed on in the draft room was Sharif Floyd.
We ended up with all-pro Travis Frederick and a pick from trading down.
The phrase you are looking for is Thank You Rod.

Yikes... Cowboys aren't carrying 12 DL.

That's why they value position flex. 10 is about the max.
1 or 2 on PS.

Base: DLaw--Irving--Collins--Crawford
Sub: Taco--Datone--Price/Ash--Tapper
Nickel: DLaw--Irving--Crawford--Gregory

Obviously that's 10 with the longshot of Gregory so you could keep Mayowa or draft a guy.
But the DL last year wasn't really an issue.
*You draft there because you always draft there but a big free agent there is VERY unlikely.

Unless you lose Irving for a draft pick plus his cap space.
Or crazily lose DLaw.

Yeah but if they get a chance to draft a dominant 1tech they shouldn't let numbers get in the way.

Well that’s news to me I’m sure somebody can pull snap counts. @xwalker or @KingintheNorth or @Nightman

At any rate this D-Line would be insane with even a true middle of the road 1-Tech and both Collins and Irving tag teaming from the three...
They don't show snaps per position. Just total snaps on defense.

Collins played 3tech in 2016. Any snaps at 1tech were a very low number.

I've learned that they break habits but Dallas is very unlikely to draft a 1t for round 3 or pay big money.
They do not ask the player to play many snaps and they do save that positions money for DE.
No team can have all pros at every position.
The no name 1T guys in Dallas have worked the last two seasons.

I think this is what confuses people.
Dallas doesnt ever pass rush with a 1T.
The player in the game at DT is either stunting (usually hitting the LT to free up the DE) or hitting 1 gap.
Dallas doesn't really blitz backers so this isn't some go take up two dudes pass rush scheme.

In fairness you can't fully see what the guys do without coaches or end zone film but it's pretty obvious when Crawford and Irving are in the game at DT together on 3rd and 12 it's not to pay 1T.

It's a 4-3 "Bear" front, older coaches might refer to it as a 5-2 box. I was just trying to find a picture with two 3 Tech's.

Never heard of a 4-3 BEAR front. That picture literally has 4 LBer's in with 3 down linemen. Out of curiosity, what was Randy White? A 3 tech or a 1 tech? Those terms didn't exist back then as far as I remember. They were just called DT's and DE's.

3 techs and 1 techs are literally assignments. You can have two 3 techniques and two 1's depending on where you put your linemen. They're one gap assignments.

We have had overall good run defense except when we need to have it. Lol. Our pass rushers would clean up if we had a dominant guy inside.

Yup, it. 0-2-4-6 moving left away from Center and 1-3-5-7 moving right in old middle school parlance.

Playing a 3 with a 1 is a means to force the Center to double the 1T.

1 is inside the OG, 2 is straight up. 3 is outside the guard.
Philly had that crazy wide 9 defense not long ago, lol.
That's outside the TE.

Definitely not nose guard. He was a right DT. So I suppose if we called him today what he was then it might be a 3 tech? Although on certain alignments, I am sure he would play that 1 tech position. We sure could use another Randy White on this team.

We had a DT get 8 sacks in 7 games and a DE gets 14.5 on the season.
Again, I struggle to see any validity to the bloodthirst for a premier 1T that has been around for 5 years now amongst fans.
I'm not saying I'd hate if we got one, suggesting the team has made it known they don't think it;s a priority so it's a waste of effort.
And the team may have been right all along looking at the stats.

True. I was just pointing out that the image that was used as an example of a 4-3 is actually a 3-4. A 4-3 is not an alignment it is having 4 down linemen and 3 LBer's. Regardless where you line up the DL there must be 4 of them to be a 4-3. If a LB is at the line in a 3-4 defense it is still a 3-4 defense even though there are 4 men on the line. The LB is not in a 3 point stance.

They called it the Flex defense..............RWhite would penetrate the 2 gap but also attracted double teams that freed up the MLB

................. the opposite 2 DT or flex would lay back and then fill a gap, in or out

Honestly the Flex is so complex that the players couldn't describe it but it worked.....it was created to combat GB's running prowess and confused OCs for decades
