I have been working on this for a few days, but the arrival of the Cowboys newest fan last night delayed the process! All stats are from NFL.com and pro-football-reference.com. I apologize in advance if I made any errors in the data.

Top Qbs from last season with multiple interceptions in 1 game and their career INT%, TD%, Yards Per Pass Attempt, and then I deducted their INT% from their TD% to see how the Qbs faired.

Drew Brees
3 Games with 2 INTs
2 Games with 3 INTs
Negative Impact: Lost all 5 games in which he threw multiple INTs. Winning two of those games would have resulted in a playoff appearance.
2.7% INT Career
4.8% TD Career
7.2 YPP Career
+ 2.1 TD to INT%

Jay Cutler
3 Games with 2 INTs
1 Games with 3 INTs
Negative Impact: Lost all 4 games in which he threw multiple INTs. Winning one of those games would have resulted in a division title.
3.2% INT Career
4.4% TD Career
7.4 YPP Career
+ 1.2 TD to INT%

Joe Flacco
4 Games with 2 INTs
2 Games with 3 INTs (One 3 INT game in playoffs)
Negative Impact: Lost 5 of the 6 games in which he threw multiple INTs. Winning one more of the multiple INT games would have resulted in a tie for the Division (not sure about tie breakers), winning 2 more of the multiple INT games would have resulted in home field advantage throughout the playoffs (not sure about the tie breakers). The 3 INT game cost the Ravens a shot at the Super Bowl

Eli Manning

Peyton Manning
5 Games with 2 INTs
Negative Impact: Lost 3 of the 5 games in which he threw multiple INTs. Winning two of those games would have resulted in a division championship and home field advantage throughout the playoffs instead of going on the road and ultimately losing that road game to the Chargers.

Qbs who have won the Super Bow since 1990. Romo as a starter has played two seasons. In one season he threw 14 INTs and the other he threw 19 INTs. I wanted to see how many times Super Bowl winning Qbs have had a season where they threw 14 or more INTs in one season and 19 or more INTs in one season at some point in their careers. Some observations -

1. Romo’s multiple INT games from last year are in line with what most of the “top” QBs experienced as well. In other words Romo’s multiple INT games were not all that unique.

2. The top Qbs from last year were involved in 47 games in which they threw for multiple INTs. 38 of the games in which the QB threw for multiple INTs in one game resulted in a loss. Of those 38 losses only three teams did not suffer a huge impact. Those teams were Ben R and Pittsburgh (won the Super Bowl). Phillip Rivers and the Chargers and Donovan McNabb and the Eagles did not see a huge impact because of the multiple INT games. All the other Qbs cost their teams pretty heavily because of the games they threw multiple INTs.

2. After two seasons in which many have determined that Romo cannot win a Super Bowl, I realized that of the 14 winning Super Bowl Qbs since 1990, all have thrown as many as 14 but less than 19 INTs in one season and only Montana, Young, Aikman and Brady have never had a season in which threw 19 INTs or more.

3. It appears many Dallas fans would “settle” for a Brady or Peyton type QB. Count me in. I checked and they still don’t grow on QB trees. How about the bus driving game manager types? I am really not who is a good example of a QB like that.

4. The “game manager” QB. As soon as Dallas has a defense that is up to the challenge, I will be all for a QB like that even though like I mentioned in point 5, I am not sure who that guy is.

5. It appears to me that many Cowboy fans are looking at Romo in a vacuum and not in relation to what other Qbs do. I am certain that many Cowboys fans only look at the end result and not how Coaching, Special Teams and Defense played significant rolls in the winning reputation of some of the Qbs in which they would gladly trade for Romo.

6. Romo is not blameless. Not intimating he has nothing to work on. Multiple INT games are horrible and inexcusable but certainly not uncommon if you compare to other Qbs.

7. I believe if Dallas gave up on Romo now it would be a move that is unprecedented in the NFL. Many Cowboy fans would rejoice only to find that they did not get the next Brady, Montana or Aikman but they got the next “we need our next” QB.

No stats for fumbles?

I thought about that. Only reason I did not is that has not really been the topic of conversation. It has been INTs and not fumbles. Obviously if the fumbles continue not in proportion to what other QBs do then yes it has to factor in.

Well, turnovers is the issue and fumbles fall into that catagory.

I think you messed up your calculations somehow. Eli has thrown 2,351 career passes and has 101 TD passes (4.3 percent) and 75 interceptions (3.2 percent), for a plus-1.1 ratio. His career YPA is only 6.5, and he has never finished a season with a YPA higher than 6.8.

Edit: Looks like you put Peyton's numbers under Eli's name.

Thanks...I did do that. I fixed it. I think!

As you can see, a quarterback losing two or three fumbles in a season is quite normal, and losing four or five is fairly routine. Romo lost seven last year, which is too many. We'll see if he goes back to a normal number of lost fumbles, like he had in 2007, or if he continues to have a problem, like Kurt Warner has had. Maybe Romo will end up like Favre, who usually loses three to five and occasionally loses more.

I find interesting that Ben R the Golden Boy lost the same amount of fumbles as Romo did last year. Also last year Ben R had a 3.2 INT% and Romo had a 3.1 INT%.

agree gbrit: problem is I don't CARE about every other QB that can't win the big one: McNabb, Delhomme, etc......because I've been a COWBOYS fan for 32 years. So.................there you go.

Maybe Romo will end up like Favre, who usually loses three to five and occasionally loses more.

agree gbrit: problem is I don't CARE about every other QB that can't win the big one: McNabb, Delhomme, etc......because I've been a COWBOYS fan for 32 years. So.................there you go.

I get that, but what do you do? Should we just change QBs every 2 or three years until we win a Super Bowl? Since we are all Cowboy fans do get a 100% back money guarantee on a Championship producing QB? What are the odds that we get rid of Romo and the guy that replaces him is the next Manning, Brady or Aikman?

Frustrated...sure, but what is the answer?

I found it interesting that 3 of the 4 guys who didn't have 19 in a season were multiple Super Bowl winners.

Montana - 4
Aikman - 3
Brady - 3

I noticed that to, and mentioned that if we can go pick up a Montana, Aikman, or Brady in my obersavion #7 that we should do so.

Interesting enough Montana was an 80s guy, Aikman 90s, and Brady 00s. In other words once a decade type player.

But hey its our constitutional right to have a guy like that, I guess?!

Just a brilliant freaking post.

I'm glad that fans are cooled down a bit now, and can look at this objectively.
