Something I Miss In This Team

We don't need dirty players so much as tone setters. I remember a game against the Skins in 2005 where Witten was absolutely drilled on our first possession. I can't be certain if it took the fight out of us, but we proceeded to go through the motions the rest of the day. I never thought I'd see a Parcells team get pushed around, but I did.

Great post Hos and completely agreed.

I think our main veteran guys are now starting to realize the importance of protecting the :star:.

Throw in the new stadium and some of the bad-mouthing surrounding our team and you have the recipe of Nasty-Ness.:eek:hboy:

Barber can do that, but I think he is more likely to do that in the 4th quarter when a team has been pounded. I want someone who will set the tone early.

Bill Bates on the opening kickoff kind of tone setter.

There is no nasty on this team. In today's NFL you need nasty on D because it has to be within the play.

Roy W. was that guy. He smacked the crap out of Trader Emmitt when he talked crap. He made NFC East WRs legitimately afraid. We need that back bad. I, of course, am not saying we need Roy back - he's done - but we do need the sort of attitude that comes from a defender who lays lumber.

I don't know that I agree with this. The Giants games are about as physical as I've seen in the NFL the last two seasons. The PIT game last year was, too. Hamlin can set a tone. Ratliff and James, too. Spears even gets it going sometimes.

On offense, it's Barber and Colombo. Though I agree I wouldn't mind more of those guys on both sides.

Thanks for reminding me of that Emmitt hit. That play still brings an evil grin to my face.

I became a big T.O. fan during his first year here when I saw how much he cared. For better or for worse, he's gone.

Keith Davis had plenty of Teague in him, I believe, but he wasn't starter material. He's gone.

Marc Colombo has some of it in him. But we need it from a skill position guy.

I'm hoping Igor Olshansky has some in him. His reputation would suggest that he does.

Bradie James is another guy who might have some degree of it in him.

I agree about TO. I was always torn over Terrell. I thought it was time for him to go and I applaud JJ for the guts to do it. His sefishness was fixing to be a BIG prob.

OTOH -he was one of the few players on our team that I felt like genuinely hated to lose. He was firey and passionate he just didn't always direct it or channel it right.

We need solid, high character, good teammate type of guys who hate to lose so much it burns a freakin hole in their gut. There's a dif between having good character and being a choir boy. From kickoff to whistle stop I want twenty two players that want to rip your damn head off on every play.

Quit helping em up after every tackle. Lay em out and tell em to get ready it'll be like that all day. Quit hugging and kissing after the game, esp when we lose. Have some damn pride man. Get PO'd.

I just want our team to hate to lose to the skins, eagles and giants as much as we hate it.

Why do people say NFL players don't care about winning?

Most of these teams fight their guts out every sunday.

People see big money involved and think thats all these guys care about. BS.

The NFL puts out one of the most motivated groups of players out there.

It's not about hitting a player after you got abused all game long like Teague did Owens after he paraded on the star. It's not about jumping a Mike Furrey after he throws the ball at an endzone decoration when his team has owned you through the air. Tough teams command respect. Soft teams get their noses rubbed in it.

People disrespect the star because they are allowed to do so. Why? Because this team doesn't make them respect it and command that level of respect as competitors. When we fold in the crunch, it is going to be noticed and observed as a tendency. We are not known as a tough team and haven't been for years. Being a bunch of celebrities probably contributes to it.

I don't care to hear about who is "nasty" now either. Its fool's gold.

The 1990s team, for example, had an offensive line that would literally beat up opponents and make them cry. Erik Williams would beat William Fuller and Reggie White into blubbering messes. This is a violent game and I don't see any violence out of this crew. The best we can do now is Marc Colombo tossing DeAngelo Hall around.

Its one of the things I enjoy about the nhl. It is a league that is trying to be offense offense offense but at the same time they wont touch the enforcers the way the nfl has the defensive players. If you showboat in the nhl, for the most part you had better be able to protect yourself, you will get your teeth kicked in and the guy who did it will get 5 minutes in the box and will come back out and kick your remaining teeth in if you do it again.
A-****ing-Men.

Watch the NHL playoffs, Hos. You'll see the attitude you crave in almost every game, except maybe the Ducks and Red Wings because they are all pansies.

Let's go CAPS!!!!!!!!!

Someone needs to bust Crosby in the face tomorrow right off the bat. If the refs want to use their whistles against the Caps that badly, might as well give them a good reason. Bring back the Brashear!

I think what you miss in the NFL is never coming back, Hostile. It's too Hollywood. :)

I have a hard time believing that at the end of the Baltimore game and thru the Philly game our team was fighting their guts out.

Unless we all missed something, they laid down and quit. We had the whole season on the line and we saw how this team responded.

If that's the reflection of their leadership, either coaches or players, then we need some changes.

Show me a soft team and I will show you a mediocre or a sorry team.

Football is a savage sport. It is not coincidental that the cheatriots and steagles have some of the most despised players on their rosters.

I want to see a little George Teague from someone. I'd like to see someone shut Brandon Jacobs up next year when he opens his festering gob about the Cowboys. I'd like to see some guy who celebrates a 1st down get the taste knocked out of his mouth.

I'd like to see a player who looks at that magnificent new stadium and sends the message to the other teams that you will not come in our house and disrespect us.

I think that the most frustrating thing for me the last few years has been the Mike Furrey breaking the star incident a couple of years ago. I think someone should have rang his bell.

The toughest player on this team in terms of making someone pay is probably Marion Barber and I love his smashmouth, stiff arm from hell style. If we could clone any player my vote would be him. If everyone gave his kind of effort we would be a great team. Not a good team, a great one.

Teague wasn't here for our great teams, so why do I want someone like him? It's real simple. I want someone who has pride in winning. I want someone who is an enforcer. Truth be told I want a Cliff Harris even more than a George Teague. If Owens had pulled that crap when Harris was playing I don't believe he'd have left the field under his own power. I'd put money on that.

Losing that last game at Texas Stadium has stuck in my craw all off season. Far more than the 44-6 season finale in Philly. It just seems to me that what this team could really use is someone who takes stuff just a little bit personal. Maybe a Kevin Gogan who would fight at the mere suggestion of a disagreement. Columbo has a little of that. I'd love it if he amped it up a notch or four.

It's a new house. There needs to be a new attitude. One that says, disrespect us in any way, and you will not like the way we make you pay.

I agree 110%. That is one thing that I do believe is missing, and has been, for a while now. This team is full of guys who are happy to be Cowboys, enjoy being a Cowboy, but there aren't any who live to be that. There aren't any Cliff Harris, George Teague, Darren Woodson, Michael Irvin types who take being a Cowboy as meaning something more than just being an NFL player.

This team doesn't need anyone to play dirty, by any means, but playing with some more controled violence...yeah I think so.

One thing I remember hearing last year, and I don't remember who pointed it out, about our defense last year was that while they sacked QBs, and did it great, they didn't really smash any QBs. They sort of run back there, drag a guy down, get the sack and that's that. No one goes in there and just absolutely blows a QB up.

Again I'm not talking about a dirty hit, I'm talking about a big time, legal, smash you in the mouth and make you remember it hit.

We're missing that a bit now and I'd love to see it comeback to this team.

And I agree with you on the Owens thing about Harris, Hos. But I'll take it one step farther and say there was a whole host of guys, back then, that wouldn't have stood for that and it would have been a bad day for Owens had he done it with them on the field.

And I agree Barber and Marc have it but I think Witten has some of it to some degree as well. He will run through a guy, and punish them, as much as a TE really can while he's catching balls all over the field.

I just want to see this team, mainly our O-Line and defense of course, just start taking it personal and getting extremely physical with people. You want them to KNOW they were in a battle when the game is over. That's what this team needs back, among some other things.

We used to have a guy on offense who wouldnt let us get pushed around or let other players jaw and nobody say anything back. Ahh well hes gone now back to the softness right #11? Nobody on this team has a persona of a Ray Lewis or TO. They let Jacobs talk and do all that because of fear.

What exactly did TO ever do here to keep people from talking smack?

Wasn't he part of the roster that Jacobs has been running his mouth about for last 2 years?

Owens made plays, for sure, but Owens didn't get in anyones faces or make players from other teams think twice about jacking their jaws, or being disrespectful.

In fact given Owens history of disrespecting teams, including ours, it would be laughable if he even attempted to say anything to someone.

Does TO play defense? I remember him being the only one to talk crap to Dawkins after all his cheap shots. I remember him being the only demonstrative person on the field after he destroyed the Bears on National tv. I remember him talking trash to big bad Michael Strahan during the playoffs while nobody else was doing anything. I love how TO would talk trash and act like he was unstoppable to opposing defenses. That swagger will be lost and it will show when people make Roy Williams a non factor. Deanglo Hall found out what happens when u talk trash to TO. What happens when you talk trash to Romo like alot of defenders do? ummm nothing.
